Facing Ming You's explanation, Ming Hua and Qian Gu finally understood what the laboratory intended to do. A place that had committed countless wrongdoings wanted to bury its past, and the best way to do that was to ignite a fire using some "small matters," then escape through a pre-prepared tunnel while the flames burned brightly.
Neither of them asked their sister why she would help the laboratory with such heinous acts; Ming Hua believed that his sister must still have a conscience. Qian Gu agreed with Ming You's suggestion not to inform the Jiang Family, deciding to hold off for now and see how Bunan and the others would handle New Life Hospital.
The three sat at home enjoying hot pot, but only Ming You was eating happily while Ming Hua and Qian Gu picked at their bowls like they were chewing wax. They felt sorry for their brother but also trusted that their sister’s reassurances were well-founded.
"What are you worried about?" Ming You scoffed. "I've got everything arranged. You two still don't trust me?"
"If we could trust you, we'd be fools," Ming Hua retorted angrily. "You, Brother Qian Gu, barely escaped from the laboratory, and now you're helping them again. The only reason we haven't knocked some sense into you is because we believe you haven't completely lost your way. And what’s with this mysterious attitude about waiting and seeing? What are we supposed to be watching for?"
The girl smiled sweetly, nudging Qian Gu with her shoulder, playfully asking if his wife would trust her. The man helplessly added meat to her bowl, saying of course he believed her.
"Just focus on eating; the best is yet to come."
What Song Bunan didn’t expect was that the head of the Jiang Family would also join their meeting. The man, leaning on a cane, approached slowly, followed by Uncle Meng, who wore a familiar smile as he carried a plate of small cookies. He sat down beside Bunan and asked what they had discussed so far.
"We analyzed that New Life Hospital must be fully prepared for our arrival. Hiding things only makes us look petty, so we plan to go directly there once we're ready and head straight for the underground facilities," Shui Su explained.
The head of the family nodded slightly and said, "If we can confirm that there are internal divisions within the laboratory, then your actions will certainly help one side prevail. Based on all available information in the market, the laboratory's true location is not at New Life Hospital."
"When Bunan and I investigated New Life Hospital through a friend’s connections, we found that most of the underground areas were merely for resting and observation; they lacked any surgical equipment. According to some patients' fragmented memories, the places where they were forced into experiments were not ordinary hospitals but locations resembling a mansion with old and dilapidated architectural silhouettes. Based on their descriptions, I suspect that the actual site for surgeries must be within the Gu Family's old residence," Shui Su concluded.
Shui Su's analysis received support from Song Bunan, who nodded in agreement and mentioned that he had also heard rumors about strange occurrences around the Gu Family Old Residence over the decades. Sometimes passing by at night, one could faintly hear cries coming from inside. However, because it was unclear and intermittent, it had turned into an urban legend claiming that too many unjustly dead souls resided there, crying out every night.
"I've checked around there," Song Bunan continued. "On the surface, it looks very dilapidated, but some things have clearly been renovated; the dirtiness is just a façade to cover up the real situation. At that time, I wasn't investigating anything related to the laboratory so I didn't think much of it; I assumed it was just remnants left by people who had lived there temporarily. Now it seems those changes were made by people from the laboratory for convenience."
"But how did they transport batch after batch of experimental subjects to New Life Hospital? That house isn’t in a remote area; many people must have seen it," Xiao Mei asked.
"Do you all remember the situation around that house?" the head of the family asked.
Song Bunan carefully recalled the architectural layout surrounding the house and suddenly realized that the area was almost entirely filled with small two-story commercial buildings and private mansions. He shared his thoughts, earning a look of appreciation from the head of the family.
"The Gu Family was the first to build a residence in this city. With hundreds of years of history, their mansion must encompass more than just what we see now. According to the older generation, back in the day, the Gu Family intended to construct their own world underground in this city. There must be extensive hidden passages below for their movements."
"Moreover, there must be something akin to a Restriction around that house; otherwise, Shui Su and the others would have noticed something amiss by now," Song Bunan interjected.
Shui Su nodded slightly but then shook his head, speaking uncertainly. "I once patrolled that area, and even someone went inside without discovering anything unusual. However, considering the current situation, perhaps the person who patrolled cannot be trusted."
Everywhere was filled with traitors and insiders. Xiao Mei chuckled. No one refuted his statement; after all, the reality was far more severe than his words suggested. Only Song Bunan responded with an exaggerated expression, mouthing a secret phrase that only the two of them understood.
The head of the family locked eyes with Xin Yi and asked if he would consider joining the Jiang Family, assuring him that with his abilities, he could certainly thrive here. Xin Yi tried to ignore Song Bunan's hopeful gaze and declined the proposal, explaining that he planned to take a good rest for a while and would think about a new job once things settled down at the lab.
"Hah," Xiao Mei exclaimed in disbelief. "How can you afford to support our Bunan with that mindset? Don’t be fooled by this kid’s serious work ethic; you can’t just let him support you while you’re together! Show some sincerity; otherwise, how will you face your parents? If Uncle and Aunt ask what you do, and you say you're unemployed, you'll get passed over!"
From across the table, Song Bunan picked up his chopsticks and threw them at her, warning her with a smile on his face not to speak carelessly. The instigator paid no mind to his anger and stuck out her tongue at him playfully.
"She’s not wrong," Xin Yi said as he restrained Song Bunan from rushing over. He met Xiao Mei's gaze seriously. "I haven’t spent much during my years at Mighty Falcon; my savings are all handed over to Bunan. Besides, it was Bunan who suggested I take a break; he wants me to stay home longer to teach me how to cook."
Xiao Mei suddenly lost her enthusiasm as she was metaphorically fed dog food. She clapped her hands mockingly and pointed at the smug Song Bunan, gritting her teeth as she repeatedly said "good," which made Shui Su laugh as well.
"I’ve heard about Mighty Falcon; it’s truly unfortunate. Back when we agreed to let you station in Rongcheng, the Jiang Family also contributed to that vote and has benefited from your assistance over the years. Now that you’re disbanding, if any members wish to join us, the Jiang Family will always welcome them," the head of the family expressed his admiration for some members of Mighty Falcon without reservation. Whenever there were matters requiring cooperation, he would always offer the best rewards for collaboration.
Xin Yi thanked him and promised to convey his words.
The head of the family did not linger long; he told them they could request anything needed for their actions—the Jiang Family would handle procurement and preparation. Once they confirmed their departure time, he would send a team of trusted aides to assist them so they could proceed without worry.
"Also, Bunan, for your convenience, I've added a few more items to your parents' itinerary, so they'll be coming back a bit later." The head of the family had one foot out the door when he suddenly turned back to speak with Song Bunan. After finishing his sentence, he noticed the man suddenly stand up, waving his hands excitedly like a piece of seaweed twisting in water, shouting "Thank you, godfather!"
Heaven knows how happy Song Bunan was to hear this news. His previously anxious heart settled back into place, and he pushed aside the concern about his parents checking up on him. He decided to shake off all the worries during this limited time.
"Why are you so happy that your parents are coming back late?" Xin Yi asked, puzzled. "Isn't it supposed to be a happy thing to have them around?"
Song Bunan smiled so wide that his eyes nearly closed. With a mischievous tone, he explained, "Of course it's great to have them around, but they can't help but check up on me. They never really believed I could live alone outside. If they found out I'm out there every day dealing with strange and unstable people, they'd definitely lock me up at home with chains. So while they're off traveling, I can finally sort out this messy lab situation. When they come back and see me just running my shop and burning paper every day, they won't have any objections."
Xin Yi sighed at the complexity of family ties before recalling Song Buxian and casually asked how his brother was handling things. This question instantly wiped the smile off Song Bunan's face as he responded with a defiant expression.
"My brother is being all mysterious. He runs just a small company selling things, yet every day he's either asking me to check the lab equipment or telling me to look into New Life Hospital, making it seem like he's involved with those people. When I went to New Life Hospital, they were happier than I was! They told me to check thoroughly; otherwise, they wouldn't give me a dime in the future. Such a cheapskate! Last time I helped him investigate something, he didn't even pay me."
"Tsk tsk tsk," Xiao Mei chimed in sarcastically from the side. "How come you're even making money off your brother? Bad little brother."
Song Bunan didn't care; he grabbed some cookies and stuffed them into his mouth, saying that brothers should settle accounts clearly and that if he worked for himself, he definitely had to charge and couldn't work for free. "Besides, during holidays I’ve sent him red envelopes too! It’s clearly a give-and-take situation."
Xiao Mei scoffed and snatched the cookie plate away from him while sticking her tongue out at Song Bunan. "Give-and-take? Every year you just send him six bucks and expect to get back a thousand or eight hundred! How can you be so shameless?"
"So what! I have an older brother who cares about me! You should ask Shui Su for some too!" Song Bunan shot back without hesitation.
Seeing the two bickering like elementary school students again, Shui Su simply moved his chair next to Xin Yi and thought it would be best for those two to discuss the upcoming plan regarding New Life Hospital together.
