They would eventually suspect me.
So, I had to leave here as soon as possible.
I returned to the house and packed all my belongings.
Then, carrying my heavy bags, I left the Landlord's territory.
All the way, I was on edge, fearing that someone might recognize me.
I didn't go to the bus station because I knew there were cameras on the buses, and with so much luggage, I would be too conspicuous.
I also didn't check into a hotel since that required ID registration, which would easily expose my whereabouts.
I ultimately decided to go to Dongshui Street and wait for Xu Qian outside the Foot Massage Parlor after his shift ended.
In the early hours of the morning, Xu Qian finally came out.
He was surprised to see me standing in the cold wind waiting for him.
"What happened?" he asked.
"I got kicked out by the Landlord..." I whispered.
"Why?"
"I don't know..." I lied.
"What are you planning to do now?"
"Xu Qian, can I stay with you for a night?"
Xu Qian paused for a moment and then nodded.
He took my luggage and led me down an alley.
At the end of the alley was a small door. Xu Qian pulled out a key and unlocked it.
It was an old house that looked somewhat run-down.
"This is my mother's house," Xu Qian explained.
"She moved in with my brother, so it's been empty ever since."
"You can stay here tonight."
I followed Xu Qian into the old house.
It was pitch dark inside, and I couldn't see anything.
"I'll go get you some essentials," Xu Qian said.
"Are you leaving?" I felt a wave of panic wash over me.
"I'll be back soon," Xu Qian reassured me.
"No! Don't go!" I clutched Xu Qian's arm tightly, refusing to let him leave.
"Why?"
"I'm scared..." I admitted.
"What are you scared of?"
"I don't know..." I lied.
The truth was, I was afraid that once Xu Qian left, he wouldn't return.
I knew that the landlord's disappearance would eventually raise suspicions.
At that point, I might end up being taken away by the police.
So, all I could do now was hide in this old house and wait for Xu Qian to come back.
In the end, Xu Qian still left.
I was left alone in the room.
I felt a sense of loneliness and fear.
I had no idea what would happen next.
Maybe I would be taken away by the police.
Maybe I would be thrown into prison.
Maybe I would face the death penalty.
I didn’t know what my future would look like.
All I knew was that I could only rely on Xu Qian now.
Dawn broke.
Xu Qian still hadn’t returned.
A wave of abandonment washed over me.
Had Xu Qian really abandoned me?
Or had he been captured by the police?
In the dim room, I saw flickering blue squares all around me.
Those squares shifted, transforming into the images of people I knew.
Li Xiang.
The real Lin Shufan.
The Landlord.
Boss Xiao Qu.
Xu Qian.
They were all looking at me, their eyes filled with resentment and anger.
I didn't understand why I was seeing these things.
Perhaps I was too scared.
Maybe I was hallucinating.
Or maybe I had already gone mad.
I didn't know what time it was.
Perhaps the police had already found the Foot Massage Parlor and taken Xu Qian away.
Maybe they would come for me soon.
Perhaps I would end up like Xu Qian's Girlfriend, dead on Boss Xiao Qu's bed.
I had to get out of here.
When I tried to open the door, I found it had been locked from the inside.
I pulled hard on the doorknob, but it wouldn't budge.
Despair washed over me.
Xu Qian no longer wanted me.
He had locked the door, trapping me in this room.
I struggled on the floor, desperate to escape.
