The Gu Family was indeed annihilated overnight. 0

That night, the sky was shrouded in dark clouds, thick gray almost pressing down the buildings to the ground. Many people rushed between the structures, crying and screaming, desperately trying to escape this chaos. However, those dressed in black and white moved faster than them, surging from all directions with knives in hand, their faces twisted in rage, like demons crawling out of hell, eager to feast on human flesh. 0

Some managed to escape, clutching their meager possessions, hoping to rebuild their fortunes with what they carried. Yet the world offered them no chance; the leaders of the Gu Family and their closest allies perished amidst those dark clouds, leaving no trace behind. 0

The survivors were filled with fervor, seeking help from those who had once benefited from the Gu Family's favor, only to find themselves locked out. Their hatred grew like thorns after rain, nourished by the desire for revenge against the family that had wronged them, pushing them to consider selling their souls for a glimmer of hope. 0

From the fog emerged a shadow, asking in a monotone voice if they were willing to do a favor in exchange for fulfilling their wishes. 0

The demons that crawled from hell smiled, transforming their hatred into flames, igniting everything before them with a small spark. 0

"Thus, for those from the Gu Family who have already given up struggling, what Lin Mo Hui and Second Uncle did was tacitly approved by the surviving members of the family. Even if they did not participate directly, they hoped for their success," Song Bunan said while sitting in his study talking on the phone with Xiao Mei, jotting down recent details as he spoke. 0

Combining all known information, they deduced how far along the experiments had progressed and made reasonable guesses about the laboratory's next steps. What troubled them was that every possible outcome was difficult to accept; all led to bad news. 0

"It is now certain that Lin Mo Hui will not be involved. Her attitude is strange; she shows extreme disdain for her relatives, nothing like someone who once lived with them," Song Bunan instinctively poked Lin Mo Hui's name on his notebook with his pen, filled with confusion. 0

The person on the other end of the line remained calm and replied lazily, "That feels quite normal. The Gu Family was once the largest family in this city; they had more branches than the Jiang Family does now. From what I've gathered from older family members about the Gu Family, that patriarch had four wives and enough children to form six or seven football teams. Even if Lin Mo Hui refers to them as uncles and cousins, it doesn't necessarily mean they had a good relationship." 0

That was indeed an explanation. Song Bunan nodded in understanding and shifted the topic back to the laboratory. He speculated that given the current situation, the laboratory intended to utilize personnel from Mighty Falcon after its shutdown to complete their experiments. They planned to disguise these individuals for easier operations, including several traitors from various families. If successful, it would surely bring trouble to several families and throw the city into chaos. 0

Xiao Mei said, "Yes, they want to incite conflict. If things get worse, they'll use these reformed traitors as troublemakers—blaming one side for actions taken by another—leading families into conflict while they sit back and wait for victory. I must say, their strategy is quite clever; there are too many flaws—grab one little detail and you can catch them red-handed." 0

Song Bunan gasped, a troubling thought creeping into his mind. He turned to Xiao Mei and said, "What if they want to use us?" 0

"Use us?" Xiao Mei replied, puzzled. 0

"We're not entirely clear on the internal struggles within the lab, but it's certain that one side is stronger than the other. What if we are just a tool for one side to eliminate the other? They wouldn't damage the beliefs of certain members, nor would they make themselves targets," Song Bunan explained. 0

The person on the other end of the line fell silent, contemplating for a long while before admitting that it wasn't impossible. 0

"What if we succeed in our mission at New Life Hospital and manage to destroy them completely, leaving no chance for resurgence? How likely would it be for us to then go to the Gu Family Old Residence headquarters?" Song Bunan scribbled his thoughts on a piece of paper. 0

Xiao Mei responded thoughtfully, "It's hard to say. If those people really see us as a means to eliminate their own pests, by the time we leave New Life Hospital, they should have already found their next hideout and successfully relocated. By then, when we rush to the old residence, we'll just be left with scraps." 0

Both fell into silence, almost simultaneously sighing in resignation. Song Bunan finished the last sip of water in his cup and irritably swept all the papers on the table into disarray. He declared he didn't want to think about it anymore; when faced with uncertainty, he preferred to sleep it off. Any problems could wait until he was well-rested. 0

On the other end, Xiao Mei shrugged it off, saying he couldn't sleep anyway. He had planned for a game night and even asked Song Bunan if he wanted to join. The latter, stretching his neck to relieve some tension, declined, stating that he finally felt sleepy and wouldn't waste time on games. He also advised Xiao Mei to go to bed early; otherwise, he wouldn't grow taller. 0

"Hah!" Xiao Mei burst out laughing. "How can you say I won't grow taller? Don't forget I'm only twenty! As the old saying goes, at twenty-three, you might shoot up! Meanwhile, you—always going on about early bedtimes and health—what's the result? You're only one seventy!" 0

"That's nonsense! I'm one seventy-five! Perfectly one seventy-five!" Song Bunan shot back, instantly losing his drowsiness as anger surged within him. He wanted to roar but had to suppress his voice since someone was sleeping in the adjacent room. His gritted teeth only made Xiao Mei laugh harder, prompting him to end the call decisively. 0

Grabbing a stuffed toy from the table, Song Bunan imagined it was Xiao Mei's head and mercilessly began to torment it. 0

When Xin Yi woke up, he immediately noticed that no one was beside him; even the bed felt cold. He quietly got up and looked outside; the study light was on, and he could see Song Bunan sitting inside. 0

The man wore headphones, speaking rapidly while writing, his expressions lively as if he were discussing matters face-to-face with someone on the other end of the line. When certain topics arose, he would make a contorted face, baring his teeth to vent his dissatisfaction. 0

The animated figure was so vibrant, showcasing a rich vitality before him; everything felt so close, so immediate. What was Song Bunan like in his eyes? Xin Yi wondered to himself. 0

A voice said: it is the fire that ignites the moon, the yellow sand that sweeps across the plains, and a cocktail mixed with a strong scent of smoke and fireworks. It trapped him in a coffin nailed shut, unable and unwilling to escape. 0

Rather than focusing on the peculiarities of the other person, it was more worthwhile to immerse himself in understanding what could lead to such oddities. He had once asked the captain and the leader what kind of family and living environment could nurture someone like Song Bunan. They had not answered; they simply smiled and shook their heads, softly admitting they did not know either. 0

Even now, he remained puzzled, unable to discern or guess accurately. 0

After hanging up, the caller continued to express himself with animated gestures. When he tossed his head back, he noticed Xin Yi’s presence. In that moment of eye contact, Song Bunan awkwardly stilled his movements, smiling so widely that his eyes squinted into slits, cheerfully asking if he had woken him up. 0

He honestly replied that he hadn’t, but it was clear that the other did not believe him. Ignoring the scattered papers on the table and floor, he approached Xin Yi and earnestly said he would sleep soon. 0

However, outside, dawn was breaking; the eastern sky glowed pale as white mist rose from the streets visible through the window. If one listened closely, faint sounds of vendors could be heard. 0

Xin Yi grasped Song Bunan’s hand and suggested they go have breakfast before continuing their sleep. 0
