“So!” Song Bunan nearly shouted, “So everyone down there knows about this mess! But they still tell me they have no leads for me to investigate? Why?”
His question went unanswered by Shui Su, who simply reached out to tug at the hem of his shirt, signaling him to calm down while also indicating with his eyes that he shouldn’t let anyone else know about this.
The current situation was not friendly for Xiao Mei and Xin Yi. The two of them were likely still waiting in the restaurant, eagerly anticipating the return of these two, but instead, they were crouched in the most secluded corner of the Jiang Family estate, engaged in a particularly private conversation.
The catalyst for this was Song Bunan’s curiosity about what Shui Su and his group had experienced at the Gu Family. He had originally envisioned a fierce confrontation, but there hadn’t been a spark of conflict; they had come out smoothly, looking nothing like people who had been taken there for a specific purpose.
However, his question only received a vague explanation. Just as he was about to press further, he felt his phone vibrate. Checking the message, he found it was from the person sitting across from him. Shui Su wanted him to step out with him shortly; there were matters that couldn’t be disclosed to the other two.
Before he could raise any suspicions, Uncle Meng reappeared, smiling slightly as he informed them that the family head wanted Shui Su and Song Bunan to go to the conference hall while Xiao Mei and Xin Yi could head directly to the restaurant. Upon hearing it was the family head’s request, Xiao Mei expressed her disinterest but happily followed Uncle Meng to the restaurant to choose dishes. As they parted ways, Xin Yi glanced back at Song Bunan, who winked at him reassuringly.
The result was that Shui Su led him to the most remote spot in the Jiang Family estate, surrounded only by trees and piles of old firewood that hadn’t been used in years. They found a clean spot among the wood and crouched behind it. Song Bunan asked Shui Su what was so important that it required such secrecy.
The one who favored white clothing seemed unfazed by the cramped space; his expensive coat brushed against the firewood and became soiled as he quietly inquired if any Ghost Messengers had approached him recently regarding related issues.
Song Bunan thought carefully and honestly replied that no one had contacted him since he received items from the Ghost Messenger. He hadn’t sought out any information either; it felt like there was nothing worth discussing.
“That’s precisely the problem,” Shui Su said. “To be honest with you, Underworld has known about the laboratory situation for quite some time. Their approach to you for ‘help’ was merely a facade to lower the guard of those involved over there. Now that our leader has spoken up, this matter will no longer be handled by Underworld; we’re just waiting for acceptance.”
“Huh?” Song Bunan was bewildered. The information was overwhelming; after thinking it over for a while, he finally grasped its meaning and couldn’t help but shout at Shui Su, standing up excitedly from behind the pile of wood. His question received a nod from Shui Su confirming that everyone below knew everything.
“I think you’ve already guessed why those issues at the Gu Family Old Residence weren’t managed by Ghost Messenger. Therefore, I can only tell you about what comes next,” Shui Su said sincerely, leaving Song Bunan with a grim expression as he reluctantly accepted this news, feeling an ominous sense rising within him.
"Since the leak of the List, you have become a distraction for the laboratory. They are confident that the Underworld won't pay attention to their loopholes, so as long as that document with the contact names disappears, they will be invincible. Most of the souls that were replaced are truly innocent; after all, being taken away and having their bodies turned into Wandering Soul, while anxiously waiting for a Ghost Messenger to lead them to the Underworld, is indeed tragic."
"And among those who were brought in and many of the souls they captured for experiments, there are some we arranged to infiltrate their ranks to gather firsthand information. The most impressive part is that whether these individuals have bodies or have turned into souls, it has all been carefully designed and certified by the Underworld."
"A long time ago, some Ghost Messengers began to harbor ulterior motives. They enjoyed working in the Underworld and living forever while abusing their small powers for personal gain in the human world. The higher-ups ignored this existence because it wasn't considered a major issue; they simply turned a blind eye. However, once they started colluding with the Gu Family to disrupt management, the higher-ups devised a plan on how to handle it."
"There are many Wandering Soul in the human world, most of whom wander because they cannot find themselves. The Underworld rarely interferes with their comings and goings since their existence is justified. This incident at the laboratory can be seen as a cleansing of both the Ghost Messengers and these Wandering Soul; we are now at the final stage: wrapping things up."
Shui Su spoke slowly, and Song Bunan fully understood his meaning. Upon hearing the term "wrap up," he raised an eyebrow at the active Ghost Messenger before him and confidently said, "This wrap-up must be done by us on the ground because those Ghost Messengers and successful Wandering Soul who have gained bodies are now living people. Only living people can eliminate other living people. The Underworld just needs to take over after they are killed and erase them once again. Right?"
Seeing the man nod in agreement with satisfaction, Song Bunan attempted several times to grab him by the neck and shake him but ultimately gave up due to his inability to overpower him. He sighed in exasperation and asked, "So when you went in alone back then, you were telling them that the Underworld was no longer involved in this matter, giving them a hint that they could continue their activities?"
The man did not deny it; instead, he wore an expression that said he understood. He patted Song Bunan on the shoulder and told him to focus on running his shop from today onward without concerning himself with laboratory issues, but Xin Yi's involvement could not be obstructed.
This statement made Song Bunan explode with anger again. He pointed at his own face and asked Shui Su if he thought he was an idiot. "Brother, he's my boyfriend! If I walk away from this mess and he drowns in it, what then?"
Clearly understanding his anger, Shui Su remained calm and suggested that one of them had to survive. Song Bunan leaned back in frustration, poking the man's shoulder with his finger as he angrily demanded to know which one would be saved—him or Xiao Mei?
"We're not getting involved; there's no question of saving either."
Song Bunan felt a lump rise in his throat, choking him as he pressed on about why Xin Yi had to go if that was the case. Shui Su sighed and pulled out a scroll written on special paper covered with densely packed names.
The names were categorized into a Red Circle encircled group, blue-lined slashes, and ordinary states. Among them, Xin Yi's real name appeared most strangely, overlaid with his nickname 'Xin Yi,' surrounded by red dashed lines. Confused, Song Bunan looked up at Shui Su as he slowly began to speak:
“People from the Mighty Falcon live by nicknames, which should be useless in the Underworld. This time, those who are meant to die have already been chosen by the Underworld, including those in the Red Circle. He is my friend, so naturally, I will take advantage of a little bit of power.”
Song Bunan's eyes widened in disbelief as he asked why so many had to die.
The Ghost Messenger replied nonchalantly that it was decided below, and he didn’t know the details. His tone was light, as if he were merely discussing going to pick some cabbages; where the cabbages would go was of no concern to him. Song Bunan felt a sense of despair and calmness wash over him, letting out a long sigh but unable to say anything further.
For many things, it was better not to speculate. Shui Su rolled up the paper and reminded him that this matter should not be known by anyone else, including if the Ghost Messenger came to ask.
“Oh?” He fixed his gaze on Shui Su, eager for what would come next. Shui Su did not hold back, saying, “I mentioned before that I used a bit of power.”
