The two of them reconciled faster than Song Bunan could take a sip of water. Just a moment ago, one was crying in the other's arms, and before Shui Su could finish confessing, the other had already lunged forward, kicking him down in the process. Song Bunan watched as the two embraced again, unable to separate, feeling a pang of jealousy.
"You two really have nothing better to do? Why don't you go pick up the leaves in the garden? One moment you're fighting like there's no tomorrow, and the next you're kicking each other—are you crazy?" Song Bunan, determined to break their intimate atmosphere, tossed an egg that Uncle Meng had prepared at them. Shui Su, with a bruise on his chin, smiled sheepishly and murmured a thank you.
Rolling his eyes, Song Bunan sat back on the sofa and picked up a banana, asking Shui Su what exactly happened between the Long Family and the Gu Family. Xiao Mei, sniffling beside them, remained silent. Meanwhile, Shui Su rubbed his injury with the egg and retorted, "Didn’t you go ask my dad about it?"
"That’s not contradictory. Spill it! If you don’t, I’ll take you down," he threatened with the banana. Shui Su raised his hands in surrender and poured himself a glass of water before explaining.
"The Long Family isn’t really a family; they’ve just been working for the Gu Family for generations and have developed a deep friendship with them. When the Gu Family fell, they saved many lives. Unfortunately, those people were intent on collaborating with the Ghost Messenger for experiments and even targeted the children of the Long Family. Who would be willing to gamble their own child's life on some nonsensical experiment?"
"The escape of the Long Family was seen as treason. The people from the Gu Family, along with the Ghost Messenger, decided to eliminate them. Xiao Mei's father discovered this and sought help from my father to save his only son. I wasn’t aware that Xiao Mei was on the list set by the Ghost Messenger. The night before, I asked them about it and came up with this plan on the fly. As long as Long Yiming dies, Long Mei can exist without any issues."
Shui Su’s words puzzled Song Bunan. He asked if the Underworld didn’t only consider initial names; wasn’t even the name Xin Yi ineffective? Hearing this, Shui Su shook his head and continued, "It’s different. Names with surnames and aliases are not the same. Xin Yi is just an alias, while Long Mei is a name my father specifically gave after recognizing him, and there’s a name card as proof. Out of selfishness, I didn’t submit the name card because I thought that if anything changed in the future, I could use the name Long Mei as a shield. Turns out I was right. I submitted the name Long Mei just last night, while for Long Yiming, I randomly grabbed a scapegoat who’s probably dead by now."
"A scapegoat? You didn’t care about what happened below?!" Song Bunan wasn’t surprised by Shui Su’s actions.
"There are plenty of things to manage down there; this isn’t anything major," Shui Su replied with a dismissive smile, his gaze fixed on the projected image filled with disdain. "As long as they can handle their own affairs, that's enough to be thankful for."
Song Bunan scoffed, remarking that it sounded like he wasn’t one of them down below at all. At that moment, Xiao Mei, having calmed down, asked why he had to sneak off to join the team if it was just this matter. The onlookers were astonished to hear that they had even started fighting without any prior communication.
With utmost seriousness, Shui Su said he hadn’t even spoken before being knocked down. In contrast, Xiao Mei, firmly replied that given he had hidden this from her, she could still give him another beating. As laughter escaped from Song Bunan, who felt his jaw ache from holding back laughter at how quickly things escalated again with Xiao Mei, he gestured for Shui Su to hurry up and answer.
"If I told you, it would be obvious that I'm cheating; if I don’t say anything, then if Long Yiming dies, it has nothing to do with us," said Shui Su, speaking lightly about it. However, Song Bunan realized he didn’t fully understand what was being said; when he turned to look at Xiao Mei, she wore an expression of comprehension and nodded thoughtfully.
"Forget it." Song Bunan nestled into the sofa, not particularly wanting to unravel this riddle. He pulled Shui Su over to sit beside him and, facing the other’s puzzled gaze, asked, "Did you see Xin Yi in the team? How is he?"
He noticed Shui Su's expression change instantly, a flash of hatred igniting in his eyes. The man glared at him, speaking through clenched teeth.
"Do you think the perspective you saw was just anyone's?"
To facilitate his actions, Shui Su had been walking behind a taller man who was acting as a decoy. When he finally found a place to hide while exploring inside, he turned around to see Xin Yi standing behind him with two familiar members of the Mighty Falcon, all observing as well. The camera had captured him clearly. Although he knew that with disguise it would be hard to recognize him, he still felt a wave of tension.
"I know you two were definitely watching and could recognize me." This remark made Song Bunan burst into laughter, even causing a crack in Xiao Mei's previously cold expression. "Originally, I just needed to make a quick trip and come back, but then he got beaten up."
This comment displeased Song Bunan. He playfully stuck out his tongue at Shui Su and teased, "Why blame Xin Yi? If you hadn’t sneaked in without informing Xiao Mei, who would have hit you? But speaking of which, how long do you think they’ll be in there? While you two were having fun fighting, the screen started going black really quickly; now it’s almost every few seconds that it goes dark—everything that goes black is dead?"
The screen had maintained a state of incomplete long-duration footage for quite some time, making Song Bunan feel dizzy. Occasionally, there were slightly longer shots, but the entire Gu Family estate seemed to have turned into a hellscape; it was unclear what those inside had endured.
"Actually, most on the List have been turned into experimental subjects. The footage switches too quickly; aside from those who died, it’s also possible that the equipment was damaged. When I left, those who had been modified were also released to obstruct our actions; they couldn’t avoid a fierce battle inside. The good news is that among those who went this time, not many are weak." Shui Su pulled out his phone and tapped on it a few times to bring up a software interface.
"The operation down there happens at night. There are still five hours until dark; calculating it out, they won’t finish their tasks until tomorrow morning at the earliest."
"Aren't they just ignoring everything down there?" Song Bunan sighed.
Xiao Mei chimed in, "What they call ignoring should mean they won’t interfere with the laboratory anymore, but they didn’t say anything about not intervening after such large-scale brawls occur. Those who died in today’s conflict—whether from the team or the laboratory—anyone whose body is dead but soul remains will definitely be taken by Underworld. Moreover, tonight those Ghost Messengers will surely die as well; when they go to collect souls, they’ll probably take care of those few together."
Song Bunan completely accepted this explanation. Shui Su was very satisfied with Xiao Mei's response and even added that after this incident concludes, the Underworld Messengers in the city would undergo a major reshuffle.
"Let's also thank these few for their actions." Shui Su adjusted to a comfortable position and sat down next to Xiao Mei, removing his already filthy coat and closing his eyes to rest. "There are just as many dirty dealings down here as there are up top. With their commotion, many other issues can be resolved as well. It saves us a lot of trouble."
