"You've changed."
This was the first thing the teammates of Mighty Falcon said upon seeing Xin Yi.
The remark made Xin Yi feel a bit insecure, and he lowered his head to check his body under their scrutiny. The uniform for this mission was standardized, and the size hadn’t changed from before. Could it be that he had gained weight recently while spending time with Song Bunan? Xin Yi discreetly pinched his arm; the muscle did feel a bit softer than before.
He resolved to get back to serious workouts. Xin Yi silently vowed that he could no longer indulge in a lax lifestyle alongside Song Bunan.
The captain beside him chuckled and nudged him with an elbow, teasing that no one was commenting on his physique. Xin Yi shot him a helpless look and retorted, asking what exactly had changed about him—his appearance? His hairstyle? Or was it just him as a whole?
"Your aura still gives off that vibe like someone owes you three million. As for your looks, being a bit chubby makes you more relatable. And your hairstyle? When have you ever changed it in the past few decades? When we say you've changed, we mean you seem happier compared to before. In all the years I've known you, when have I ever seen that expression on your face just now? You looked like a fool."
The woman rolled her eyes without reservation, completely different from the polite banter of the other teammates. The leader next to her nodded in agreement while adjusting his weapon, tossing Xin Yi a badge as a new gadget.
"I used to be quite happy," Xin Yi replied, organizing his belongings. He glanced at his phone one last time to ensure he had replied to Song Bunan's message before shutting it off. Reflecting on his past life, he couldn't recall much unhappiness, so he countered the captain's assessment.
"Hah. Stubborn as a dead duck," came the captain's retort. Several close teammates came over to pat him on the shoulder, teasingly telling him not to struggle; he looked happier than before, even smiling more.
"You never used to smile at your phone screen like that; it startled me just now," one teammate grinned mischievously.
You're slandering me! Xin Yi was left speechless.
This operation, the captain explained, was not just about helping various families but also their own chance for revenge. "Everyone who can join us now is trustworthy and still standing. Since the day we left Mighty Falcon, nearly every day a teammate has disappeared without a trace. Investigations have pointed all fingers at the laboratory. Meanwhile, the Jiang Family's recent upheaval has prompted everyone to take action. So I called you all back, thinking it would be more comforting to retire after we finish this job."
Indeed, Xin Yi had noticed from the very beginning that the teammates present this time were all individuals who had suffered injuries in the past, with several of them having not participated in physically demanding missions for quite some time. The younger members were notably absent. He recalled the day someone had poured medicine over him, and as he spoke, he noticed the disdainful expressions on everyone's faces. The captain crushed his cigarette butt into the ashtray and said to him, "Don't think it's just you; several others have met the same fate. Traitors exploit their identities to steal contact devices from familiar faces, luring people out to take them away. If it weren't for that clever kid, Song Bunan, you might not have made it back."
This left Xin Yi without a rebuttal. He organized his gear and sat aside, listening as the captain outlined the plan for this operation. They would not act as a single unit but rather split into smaller groups to infiltrate other families. Upon entering the Gu Family, their first task was to gather concrete evidence related to their experiments for future actions, and secondly, to locate the entrance to the underground laboratory within the courtyard. According to information provided by the Jiang Family, although they had entered previously, they had failed to find the passageway. However, based on experiences from New Life Hospital, it was highly likely that the laboratory was disguised using sewer openings or bookshelves.
"Furthermore," the captain continued, "we must be cautious of any test subjects released by them. These individuals have been completely brainwashed and transformed into human weapons—emotionless and devoid of pain or moral judgment. Even if you encounter former teammates, do not hesitate. We have all dealt with these experimental subjects to some extent; their danger is something I need not elaborate on. The primary goal of this mission is to eradicate this wretched laboratory completely and ensure they cannot rise again."
"Why Mighty Falcon was established in the first place, who those two high-ranking departments work for, what our division has been reduced to—none of that matters now. We are merely a team of survivors united in vengeance for our injured comrades."
"Brothers, this will be my last time leading you as your captain. Let's return home just as we go out, alright?" As everyone prepared for action, they looked at their captain who had reverted to her serious demeanor and unhesitatingly placed their hands on hers. Even if Mighty Falcon ceased to exist, they would forever remain comrades who had faced life and death together.
The leader teamed up with Xin Yi alongside members of the Zhang Family, where familiar faces were present in their ranks. Xin Yi was surprised to see the current head of the Zhang Family there; when the man approached him with a smile and extended his hand for a shake, he said, "Last time we met, I was so caught up in conversation that I forgot to introduce myself. I am Zhang Zhongjing, current head of the Zhang Family and one of the leaders of this operation. It's a pleasure working with you; I just didn't expect not to see Song Bunan here."
Xin Yi indicated that this matter was of little concern to him now; whether he came or not didn't matter much. The man smiled brightly at this response and expressed his desire to chat more with Song Bunan. The leader curiously asked why that was so; upon hearing this, the man's demeanor softened slightly as an unexplainable expectation flickered in his eyes.
"I visited the hospital to see a child; he said that the one who rescued him was a little deity—someone who wasn't afraid of him and even held him while treating his wounds. Song Bunan is one of the rare good people in this business; you don't come across many like him these days. Once we get out of here, I must make sure that child recognizes him as his godfather."
A strange feeling welled up within Xin Yi; it seemed that this man did not hold much hope for their mission. The emotions he displayed while speaking made it seem as though he carried a resolve for certain death. Even the leader sensed something off about him and quietly asked when he had met this person before.
After briefly explaining about rescuing the child from the hospital to his leader, Xin Yi noticed a deep frown on his elder's face. He had expected some commentary about the Zhang Family but instead heard his leader express surprise that Old Otter could have been outmaneuvered by him—this kid didn't seem that capable!
Is that really what matters? Xin Yi was taken aback. He gestured at his leader indicating they were discussing this now?
"What else should we discuss?" his leader replied defiantly. "That's Old Otter we're talking about! He brought me out; how likely do you think it is that Song Bunan could have snatched something from me?"
"Very high. The chances of Song Bunan intercepting something are quite high," Xin Yi said.
The elder, filled with disappointment, pointed at Xin Yi and lamented that she had been blinded by love and had fallen from grace.
