Xin Yi fantasized about what kind of place would be needed for such inhumane experiments—whether it would be surrounded by precision instruments or continuously modified by numerous skilled craftsmen.
The person named Qian Gu, who was nearly the same size as him, bore a scar that almost encircled his neck, the most grotesque wound he had ever seen. He had heard from Song Bunan that Qian Gu had escaped from this laboratory after enduring severe torment. The memory of the child with stitched lips deepened his aversion to the laboratory.
However, he could never have guessed that the heavily metal-clad secret location was a sparsely furnished courtyard mimicking Nongjia Courtyard, even featuring a corner filled with many toy chickens. The ceiling was adorned with warm yellow lights, casting an eerily cozy glow throughout the space.
In the center of the courtyard stood an armchair seemingly made from vines, its armrests polished to a glossy sheen.
As they entered the courtyard, Song Bunan immediately ran to squat outside the Chicken Coop to play with the toys, casually complaining to Ming You that their boss was truly idle. Ming You, standing at the entrance, spat back at him without hesitation, pointing out that it was ironic for someone who spent all day in a shabby shop like a wild man to say they had serious work to do.
The bickering between the two children added some amusement to everyone’s exploration. Xin Yi deliberately ruffled Song Bunan's hair before stepping into the thatched hut, which was just as empty inside as it was outside; it seemed to have been built merely to resemble Nongjia Courtyard.
"Can experiments really be conducted in a place like this?" Qin Xiang questioned, puzzled by the situation. The scene before him resembled a so-called "paradise" created by someone who had gone mad from being locked underground; it seemed entirely unrelated to brainwashing or body-swapping experiments.
Only he and Xin Yi wore expressions of confusion; everyone else appeared remarkably indifferent. Xiao Mei even sat down on the armchair and began taking selfies. The young man referred to as Little Dog was an exception; since arriving here, he had clung tightly to Lin Mo Hui's clothing, eyes closed and head bowed in avoidance.
No one answered his question. Only Shui Su among them inspected everything meticulously, examining every detail. After confirming that this was indeed the place, Ming Hua finally took out several small cubes from his bag and began placing them on the walls and floor.
After wandering around inside for a while, they were asked to leave and found themselves standing in the corridor, exchanging wide-eyed glances. At that moment, Song Bunan returned to Xin Yi's side, still holding onto a toy he had snuck out from inside. Xin Yi tilted his head in curiosity as Song Bunan proudly held up the toy chicken in front of him and generously offered it for him to keep.
"So, care to explain?" Xin Yi reached out to pinch Song Bunan's face, which had somehow collected dust with smudges on both sides. The boy blinked innocently and flashed a mischievous smile before putting the toy into his pocket and bouncing over to Xiao Mei, saying he would explain once they got upstairs.
"Then why are you running away?" Qin Xiang asked in confusion while standing next to Xin Yi. However, he soon noticed everyone gradually moving away and sensed something amiss; feeling enlightened, he began to follow suit while only Xin Yi remained rooted in place. Not wanting his silly friend to suffer alone, he kindly waved for him to come along as well.
Then, a series of explosions echoed from the metallic walls, and the plaster that had been shaken loose fell in showers onto the corridor. The people outside retreated without being affected, except for Xin Yi.
Xiao Mei was the first to burst into laughter, followed closely by Ming You, and finally, Qin Xiang, who could no longer contain herself. The group looked at Xin Yi, who was covered in white dust from head to toe, and laughter erupted around them, even causing the little dog to twitch its mouth and turn away.
“Oops! I forgot Brother Xinyi has an injury on his head!” Song Bunan suddenly stopped laughing midway, realizing the trouble he had caused. He rushed forward, intending to wipe Xin Yi’s face with his not-so-clean sleeve.
A hand appeared to stop him, but it was pale and slender, with needle marks on the back—definitely not belonging to anyone in their group. Alarm bells rang in Song Bunan's mind as he shook off the hand and instinctively kicked out. The figure dodged swiftly, standing across from them with an odd posture, tilting its head and smiling at him.
“Gu Qing? Aren’t you supposed to be paralyzed?” Ming You blinked in surprise upon recognizing the newcomer. She had just checked on him and had even locked him in a relatively safe office; the key was still in her pocket. “How did you get out?”
The person called Gu Qing blinked slowly, turning his neck to twist his head onto his shoulder. A strange gurgling sound emanated from his throat, not resembling that of a normal person.
“It’s a zombie! He’s a zombie!” Song Bunan shouted exaggeratedly, waving his arms like a gorilla as he rushed to Xin Yi’s side, clinging to his boyfriend while brushing off the dust from him. “Brother Xinyi, protect me.”
“Gu Qing?” Ming Hua looked at the man across from them, frowning as she thought for a moment before recalling who he was. “The second son of the Gu family? He’s been paralyzed for over ten years and can stand now?”
This left them all stunned as they stared at the man whose condition seemed off. They feared that he might indeed turn into some strange creature as Song Bunan had said. Upon hearing Gu Qing's identity, Song Bunan spat at him and pointed angrily. “You’re the one who covets my boyfriend! You’re really not human!”
“You can’t get out,” Gu Qing said in a hoarse and peculiar voice as he slowly approached them with an awkward gait. His movements were slow and strange, reminiscent of a zombie from a horror film.
Ming You was the first to act, drawing a long whip from her waist and striking it through the air. Despite his slow movements, Gu Qing twisted his body just in time to evade the attack and raised his hand to grab the whip, standing against Ming You with surprising strength that seemed to surpass hers.
“He has been modified too,” Qian Gu suddenly spoke up after remaining silent since they arrived. “I wouldn’t mistake it; he is one of the successful modifications—the first successful subject among all experiments.”
The fully transformed being surprisingly looked like this, and everyone unconsciously glanced at the little dog beside Lin Mo Hui, who had maintained a fighting stance for quite some time. Compared to the complete form, the half-finished version seemed much cuter.
“He can't still be thinking about Xin Yi's body, can he? The laboratory is destroyed; it wouldn't do him any good,” Xiao Mei remarked as she wrapped bandages around her hands for the upcoming fight, commenting on the sudden appearance of this individual.
Song Bunan stood behind, scoffing, claiming that if he could take down his mother, he could certainly take down him. “Anyone who has thoughts about my boyfriend must die.” The words were harsh, and it was unclear which part triggered the man, who suddenly crouched and accelerated towards them.
This person fought with a chaotic and unpredictable style. Xiao Mei, having never encountered such a fighting method before, found herself at a disadvantage and unsure of how to respond. After receiving permission from Lin Mo Hui, the little dog joined the fray, and the two engaged in a thrilling exchange of blows.
Shui Su signaled to Xiao Mei to hold back and called everyone to step back a few paces, forming a circle in the corridor. Xin Yi had regained much of his strength; he held Song Bunan's hand to absorb his body heat and could feel the man's heart racing, his expression serious as he watched their opponent like a hawk.
“He's tougher than those Patient Gowns,” Ming You analyzed their opponent's combat data, indicating that this individual was above ordinary test subjects. It seemed that the cheap boss had indeed left himself a glimmer of hope; it was just unfortunate that she had died too early; otherwise, she could have seen the child she carefully nurtured and transformed stand up.
Song Bunan looked at Xin Yi with disdain and coldly remarked that it would be better if he didn’t stand up at all; it seemed too ominous. He glanced at Xin Yi, who was in a pitiful state due to the prank, and decided it was best for him to stay put while he went to confront this “hope.”
Xin Yi reached out to grab hold of the eager individual, receiving a comforting pat in return. Song Bunan rolled up his sleeves and smiled at him. “Don’t worry; based on his fighting skills, he’s not as good as I am.”
Although the little dog could hold its own against him, it was clearly at a disadvantage in terms of stamina. Before Song Bunan could get closer, it was hit in the chest while trying to dodge and fell to the ground, curling up in pain. Only then did Lin Mo Hui move; he slowly walked over and picked up the little dog, returning it to their group while telling Song Bunan that if he couldn’t win, he shouldn’t come over for meals later.
“Why are you so sure he can win?” Xin Yi asked. He hadn’t truly gauged Song Bunan’s combat abilities; piecing together stories and past performances only led him to conclude that he was quite skilled. Faced with such an opponent, everyone seemed surprisingly confident in letting him take action.
Xiao Mei frowned upon hearing his question and turned back to Xin Yi with confusion. “Haven't you ever seen him fight?”
