Even if my parents stood right in front of me, they probably wouldn’t recognize me.
Let alone a police officer.
“It’s best if there isn’t,” Chen Zhiyuan said, “after all, you were detained for drunk driving not long ago.”
“That was in the past,” I replied with a smile.
“I hope so,” Chen Zhiyuan said, “because I wouldn’t want to see someone as beautiful as you too often.”
“Why is that?” I asked him.
He looked at me meaningfully. “Because if I see you often, it means you’ve committed another crime.”
In the end, I followed Chen Zhiyuan back to the police station and gave a statement.
By the time I finished and stepped out, it was already evening. I stopped Chen Zhiyuan. “Officer Chen, would it be convenient for us to grab a meal together?”
He glanced at me. “Sorry, I have other matters to attend to.”
“Well… if there’s any progress on this case, I hope you can let me know, Officer Chen.”
“Of course.” He paused for a moment. “But you shouldn’t get your hopes up.
After all, it’s been so long without any breakthroughs; the chances of suddenly solving it now are slim.”
With that, he walked away.
I returned to the apartment alone, only to find the living room lights on.
I was startled and took a closer look, realizing that my boyfriend, Zheng Xin, was already back.
He was slumped on the sofa, smoking, looking exhausted.
"Aren't you supposed to be at the police station for another two days?" I asked.
"I'm not in a good mood, so I came back," he replied.
"What's wrong?" I pressed.
He didn’t answer my question; instead, he turned to look at me. "Yao Yao, the police have found me."
My heart tightened.
What did he mean by that?
Had they already exposed him?
But that couldn't be possible.
I had clearly become someone else!
Even if my parents stood in front of me, they wouldn’t recognize me, let alone those police officers!
Yet Zheng Xin clearly had no intention of explaining this matter.
He simply stood up, walked in front of me, and embraced me. "Yao Yao, I think we might need to leave here."
"Leave? Where to?"
"Back to the capital," he said. "We should ask your parents for help. They might be able to assist us."
The capital...
That was Zhou Peiyao's home.
There were her parents, along with everything familiar yet foreign to me.
To be honest, I didn't want to go.
Even though I had lived with this face for a year, I was not her.
I had never met her parents; what if they noticed something amiss?
But Zheng Xin clearly saw my hesitation and reassured me, "Don't worry, Yao Yao.
You've been with her for so long; you should know her well by now."
I nodded, somewhat unconvinced.
After all, my face looked exactly like hers.
He probably wouldn't recognize me, right?
"Alright, alright, I'll go make you dinner," I said, patting him before standing up and walking into the kitchen.
The next day, I received a call from Chen Zhiyuan.
"Is this Miss Wang Chen?" he asked. "The autopsy report is out; please come to the police station."
I immediately set aside my work and hurried to the station.
Upon arriving, I saw Chen Zhiyuan waiting for me at the entrance.
"Officer Chen, have there been any findings?" I inquired.
"You should meet with the coroner," he replied. "He's in the second office on the left."
"Okay," I nodded and entered the police station.
Inside the office sat a young coroner. When he saw me, he stood up and extended his hand for a handshake.
"I am He Li, the coroner in charge of the autopsy."
"Hello," I said as we shook hands.
"Miss Wang Chen, I would like to ask if you noticed anything unusual when you received the body?"
