The couple was still chattering away with Chen Zhiyuan at the police station, and I had no interest in listening any longer. So, I decided to wander around and take in the scenery of the precinct.
Suddenly, I spotted a familiar figure—it was the young officer!
I approached him and greeted, "Hi! Nice to see you again!"
He looked surprised for a moment. "Miss Wang Chen? What are you doing here?"
I replied, "Officer Chen asked me to come by to get an update. By the way, has there been any progress in the case?"
The young officer thought for a moment. "Not yet... but we have found some leads, and I believe we'll catch the culprit soon."
"What leads?" I asked curiously.
He hesitated for a moment. "Well, Officer Chen told me not to say anything, but it should be fine to share this with you.
We found several prescription drugs in Miss Zhou Peiyao's system, including stimulants and sedatives.
She was also drinking alcohol while taking these medications... which likely led to her overdose."
I nodded. "I see. Has Officer Chen mentioned when we might catch the killer?"
The young officer shook his head. "Not yet, but Officer Chen is preparing to investigate the bar where Miss Zhou Peiyao worked; there might be some clues there."
Just then, Chen Zhiyuan stepped out. "Miss Wang Chen? What are you doing here?"
I said, "I just met Miss Zhou Peiyao's parents, and I'm about to leave now."
Chen Zhiyuan nodded, "Alright, you can head back. We'll notify you if there are any developments on our side."
"Okay." I nodded and turned to leave.
After returning to the apartment, I told Zheng Xin about what had happened today.
He frowned, "So, the police are already suspecting me?"
"I'm not sure," I shook my head. "But they have found Zhou Peiyao's parents. Maybe they can get some clues from them."
Zheng Xin sneered, "What could they possibly know? They didn't even realize Zhou Peiyao had been dead for a year!"
"What do you mean?"
"You didn't know?" Zheng Xin said. "Zhou Peiyao's parents didn't care about her life or death. They didn't notice she had been dead for a year! It was only a couple of days ago that they suddenly remembered her and went to the police station to ask about her whereabouts!"
"How is that possible?!" I exclaimed in shock. "Aren't they her parents? How could they not care about her life or death?!"
Zheng Xin sneered again, "Because their hearts only belong to their younger son! They treated Zhou Peiyao as nothing more than a money-making tool!"
"I see." I realized the truth.
No wonder Zhou Peiyao preferred to rent a place outside rather than go home.
It turned out that she was merely a tool for making money at home.
Thinking of this, I sighed, "I hope they cooperate with the police investigation. After all, if the murderer can be found sooner, it would provide some closure for Zhou Peiyao."
Zheng Xin let out a cold laugh. "They won't cooperate with the investigation."
"Why not?"
"Because they want Zhou Peiyao's inheritance," Zheng Xin replied. "Zhou Peiyao has saved quite a bit of money over the years while working outside, and they want to claim it for themselves."
I couldn't believe it. "But Zhou Peiyao is their own daughter! How could they do this?!"
Zheng Xin shrugged. "Who knows? They’ve already caused a scene at the police station."
Sure enough, as Zheng Xin had said, the next day I heard that Zhou Peiyao's parents had made a commotion at the police station. They had hung a banner outside the station that read "Return My Daughter," drawing a crowd of onlookers.
