The couple was still chattering away with Chen Zhiyuan at the police station, and I had no interest in listening any longer. So, I decided to take a stroll and check out the scenery of the station.
Suddenly, I spotted a familiar figure—it was the young officer!
I approached him and greeted, "Hi! Nice to see you again!"
He paused for a moment, surprised. "Miss Wang Chen? What are you doing here?"
I replied, "Officer Chen asked me to come by to get some updates. By the way, has there been any progress in the case?"
The young officer thought for a moment. "Not yet... but we have found some leads. I believe we will catch the culprit soon."
"What leads?" I asked curiously.
He hesitated for a second. "Well, Officer Chen told me not to disclose this, but it should be fine to tell you.
We discovered several prescription drugs in Miss Zhou Peiyao's system, including stimulants and sedatives.
She was also drinking alcohol while taking these medications... which likely led to her overdose."
I nodded. "I see. Has Officer Chen mentioned when we might catch the culprit?"
The young officer shook his head. "Not yet, but Officer Chen is preparing to investigate the bar where Miss Zhou Peiyao worked; there might be some clues there."
At that moment, Chen Zhiyuan walked out and asked, "Miss Wang Chen? What are you doing here?"
I said, "I just met Miss Zhou Peiyao's parents, and I'm about to leave now."
Chen Zhiyuan nodded, "Alright, you can head back. We'll inform you if there are any updates on our side."
"Okay." I nodded and turned to leave.
Once back at the apartment, I told Zheng Xin about what had happened today.
He frowned, "So the police have already suspected me?"
"I'm not sure," I shook my head. "But they have found Zhou Peiyao's parents. They might get some clues from them."
Zheng Xin scoffed, "What could they possibly know? They didn't even realize Zhou Peiyao had been dead for a year!"
"What do you mean?"
"You don't know?" Zheng Xin said. "Zhou Peiyao's parents didn't care about her life or death. They didn't notice she was gone for an entire year! It was only a couple of days ago that they suddenly remembered her and went to the police station to ask about her whereabouts!"
"How is that possible?!" I exclaimed in shock. "Aren't they her parents? How could they not care about her life or death?!"
Zheng Xin sneered, "Because their hearts only belong to their younger son! Zhou Peiyao was just a tool for them to make money!"
"I see now," I realized with a sudden understanding.
No wonder Zhou Peiyao preferred to rent a place outside rather than go home.
It turned out that she was merely a money-making tool for her family.
With this thought, I sighed, "I hope they cooperate with the police investigation. After all, finding the murderer sooner would provide some closure for Zhou Peiyao."
Zheng Xin let out a cold laugh. "They won't cooperate with the investigation."
"Why not?"
"Because they want Zhou Peiyao's inheritance," Zheng Xin replied. "Zhou Peiyao saved quite a bit of money from working outside these years, and they want to claim it for themselves."
I couldn't believe it. "But Zhou Peiyao is their own daughter! How could they do this?!"
Zheng Xin shrugged. "Who knows? They’ve already caused a scene at the police station."
Sure enough, as Zheng Xin had said, the next day I heard that Zhou Peiyao's parents had indeed made a fuss at the police station. They first unfurled a banner at the entrance that read "Return My Daughter," drawing a crowd of onlookers.
