The sound of the doorknob turning abruptly stopped.
Jiang Ming held his breath, staring intently at the door, his heartbeat roaring in his ears.
A few seconds later, a low male voice came from outside, “Jiang Ming, are you in there?”
The voice sounded somewhat familiar, but Jiang Ming couldn’t recall where he had heard it before.
After hesitating for a moment, he finally spoke up, “Who are you?”
The person outside fell silent for a moment before responding, “I am Doctor Chen, your attending physician. Don’t you remember me?”
“Attending physician?” Jiang Ming furrowed his brow, his mind blank.
“Yes, you’ve recently gone through some… trauma, and your memory is a bit muddled.” His voice was gentle, carrying a hint of reassurance. “Open the door; we need to talk.”
Jiang Ming tightened his grip on the notebook in his hands, filled with confusion and unease.
“How do I know you’re not lying to me?” Jiang Ming asked.
The man outside chuckled lightly. “You’re still as cautious as ever. Well, if you don’t believe me, take a look in the left drawer of the desk; there’s a photo in there from last year when we were at the hospital.”
Jiang Ming hesitated for a moment before walking over to the desk and pulling open the left drawer.
Sure enough, there was a photograph inside.
In the photo, Jiang Ming stood next to a man in a white coat, with the background showing a hospital corridor.
The man looked to be around forty years old, with a kind expression; he was indeed the person outside who claimed to be Doctor Chen.
“Now do you believe me?” Doctor Chen’s voice came again.
Jiang Ming stared at the photo, still filled with doubt.
If he is my attending physician, why am I locked up in this place? Why is my memory completely blank?
And who is that reflection in the mirror?
“Jiang Ming, open the door,” Doctor Chen urged, his tone growing more urgent. “We need to leave here quickly; there isn’t much time.”
“What do you mean there isn’t much time?” Jiang Ming asked.
“The experiment has spiraled out of control; they will find this place soon,” his voice was low and hurried. “If you don’t want to be caught by them, trust me.”
Jiang Ming took a deep breath and ultimately decided to open the door.
Doctor Chen looked just like he did in the photo, but there was a hint of fatigue and anxiety on his face.
"Follow me," he said briefly, turning to walk down the corridor.
Jiang Ming followed him, still filled with confusion.
"Doctor Chen, what is going on? Why am I here? Who is the reflection in the mirror?"
He stopped and glanced back at Jiang Ming, his expression complex.
"Jiang Ming, everything you see, hear, and even remember may not be real," he said quietly. "The experiment we are conducting is meant to create a perfect personality, but something went wrong."
"A perfect personality?" Jiang Ming frowned. "Are you saying my memories have been tampered with?"
He nodded. "Yes, and you're not the only one. The Experimental Subjects have started to experience memory confusion, and some have completely lost control."
"Then who is the reflection in the mirror?" Jiang Ming pressed.
Doctor Chen was silent for a moment before replying, "That is your Mirror Personality, the Perfect Persona we tried to implant. But the experiment failed, and the Mirror Personality is beginning to erode your consciousness."
Jiang Ming was stunned, his mind a whirlwind of thoughts.
"So... I'm not the real Jiang Ming?"
"You are Jiang Ming, but your memories and consciousness have been invaded by the Mirror Personality," he said softly. "We must find a solution quickly; otherwise, you will completely disappear."
Just then, hurried footsteps echoed from the end of the corridor.
Doctor Chen's expression changed: "They're coming! Run!"
He grabbed Jiang Ming's arm and pulled him down another hallway as the footsteps grew closer.
Jiang Ming glanced back and saw several people in black uniforms chasing after them, holding strange devices.
"Who are they?" Jiang Ming asked while running.
"The heads of the experiment; they want to eliminate all out-of-control Experimental Subjects," Doctor Chen panted. "We have to find an exit!"
