They ran down one corridor after another, the footsteps behind them growing closer. Doctor Chen pulled Jiang Ming into a room, quickly shutting the door and leaning against it, gasping for breath.
“This is safe for now,” Doctor Chen whispered to Jiang Ming. He took a key from his pocket and unlocked a cabinet in the room, retrieving a small device.
“What is this?” Jiang Ming asked.
“Memory Restorer,” Doctor Chen replied briefly. “It can help you recover your altered memories, but it will take time.”
“Time? Do we have time?” Jiang Ming asked anxiously.
“We have to try,” Doctor Chen said firmly. “Otherwise, you will be completely consumed by the Mirror Personality.”
Just then, a loud crash echoed from outside the door.
“They found us!” Jiang Ming whispered urgently.
Doctor Chen quickly connected the device to Jiang Ming's temple and pressed the start button. A sharp pain shot through him as fragmented images began to flash in his mind.
—A laboratory, scientists in white coats bustling about.
—A man tied to a chair, struggling in agony.
—The reflection in the mirror, a strange face coldly staring back at Jiang Ming.
“Jiang Ming, focus!” Doctor Chen's voice urged. “You must find your true self!”
Jiang Ming closed his eyes, striving to concentrate. More images flooded into his mind.
—A little girl standing in the rain, crying.
—A man with his back to Jiang Ming, softly saying, “I’m sorry, I have to do this.”
—The reflection in the mirror reaching out, trying to grasp Jiang Ming.
“No!” Jiang Ming suddenly opened his eyes, his head pounding.
“What did you see?” Doctor Chen asked eagerly.
“I… I saw some memories, but they’re very vague,” Jiang Ming panted. “And the reflection in the mirror tried to grab me.”
"That's the Mirror Personality; he's trying to control you," Doctor Chen whispered urgently. "You must resist him!"
At that moment, the door was violently flung open, and several individuals in black uniforms rushed in.
"Don't move!" one of them shouted, aiming a device at us.
Doctor Chen quickly positioned himself in front of Jiang Ming and said softly, "Jiang Ming, remember, you are real. Don't let the Mirror Personality take control!"
"Doctor Chen, you are fired. Do not interfere with the experiment," the leader of the black-clad men said coldly.
"You can't do this!" Doctor Chen shouted angrily. "This is inhumane!"
"The experiment has entered its final phase. We must eliminate all uncontrollable Experimental Subjects," the black-clad man replied expressionlessly.
Jiang Ming stood behind Doctor Chen, his mind a whirlwind of confusion.
The reflection in the mirror reappeared, coldly staring at Jiang Ming with a sinister smile playing at its lips.
"You can't escape," it whispered to Jiang Ming. "You are me, and I am you."
"No!" Jiang Ming shouted, covering his ears in an attempt to block out the voice.
Doctor Chen's pupils suddenly constricted. He turned and tackled Jiang Ming to the ground just as a ghostly blue beam whizzed past, singeing the wall and leaving a charred mark. The weapon in the black-clad man's hand crackled with dangerous electricity; it was the lab's latest development—the Neural Disruptor.
"Run!" Doctor Chen's voice had a metallic tremor as he staggered to his feet, the hem of his lab coat burned away. Jiang Ming then noticed that Doctor Chen's right arm hung at an odd angle—his humerus had been fractured by the impact.
Jiang Ming struggled to help Doctor Chen up, but he was firmly held down by Doctor Chen's uninjured left hand. "Listen," Doctor Chen coughed up crimson foam, "you must get out..."
The alarm blared throughout the laboratory as the footsteps of the black-clad men grew closer. Suddenly, Doctor Chen lunged forward and pushed Jiang Ming toward the door. As the metal door closed behind him, Jiang Ming saw Doctor Chen staggering toward the control panel, his uninjured left hand frantically pounding on the keyboard. The Holographic Projection suddenly lit up, countless streams of data exploding into blue fireworks in midair.
"Experimental Subject... all..." Doctor Chen's voice was drowned out by the sound of electricity as the leader of the black-clad men pressed a disruptor against his temple. The last thing Jiang Ming saw was Doctor Chen's twisted smile and the flash of crimson light that erupted from him when he pressed the self-destruct button amidst the darkness.
