Jiang Ming and Xiao Ya raced down the corridor of the Experimental Base, their footsteps echoing harshly in the silence. The scientist's laboratory was just ahead, and Jiang Ming could feel his heart racing. He didn't know what awaited him, but he knew this was a pivotal moment that would determine his fate.
“Jiang Ming, are you sure we should do this?” Xiao Ya's voice trembled slightly with anxiety.
“We have to do this, Xiao Ya. Only by finding the scientist can we uncover the truth and have a chance to return to our normal lives,” Jiang Ming replied firmly.
They reached the door of the laboratory, and Jiang Ming took a deep breath before pushing it open. A sharp smell of disinfectant filled the air, and various experimental devices flickered with cold light. In the center of the room sat a middle-aged man in a white lab coat, his eyes reflecting fatigue and resignation.
“You finally made it,” the scientist said, looking at Jiang Ming and Xiao Ya without a hint of surprise.
“What have you done to us?” Jiang Ming demanded angrily, his fists clenched and body trembling slightly.
The scientist stood up and slowly approached them. “Jiang Ming, Xiao Ya, you are the two most successful cases of this experiment. We attempted to create a batch of absolutely obedient Perfect Personas through memory implantation and personality replication. You are our masterpieces.”
A chill ran down Jiang Ming's spine as he stared at the scientist, confusion and fear filling his eyes. “What about our past, our memories?”
“Your past? Those are merely false memories we implanted,” the scientist sneered. “You were ordinary people; we chose you, erased your memories, and implanted new identities and personalities.”
“No, that can't be true!” Xiao Ya gasped, her eyes wide with terror. “My life, my friends, my family—are they all fake?”
“Regrettably, yes,” the scientist nodded. “Everything about you was designed by us.”
Jiang Ming's mind spiraled into chaos as he struggled to recall his past—the beautiful moments spent with friends and family—were they all illusions? He felt his world crumbling around him.
“Jiang Ming, don’t believe him!” A voice echoed in Jiang Ming's mind; it was the voice of his reflection in the mirror. “He wants to confuse you and make you abandon your true self. You must believe in yourself; you are real!”
Jiang Ming closed his eyes, trying to concentrate and resist the interference from his reflection. He felt his consciousness wavering as the power of the Mirror Personality grew stronger.
“You have two choices,” the scientist continued. “One is to accept the false memories and identity, returning to your previous life—though it won’t be the real you, you will live happily. The other is to destroy everything and reclaim your true self, but that means you might completely disappear.”
Jiang Ming struggled internally, unsure of what to choose. He wanted to reclaim his true self but feared facing an uncertain future.
Xiao Ya looked at him and took his hand. “Jiang Ming, no matter what you choose, I will support you.”
Jiang Ming nodded, taking a deep breath as he made his decision: “I want to find my true self.”
The scientist nodded in acknowledgment and pulled out a small vial containing a blue liquid from his pocket. “Drink this potion; it will restore your true memories, but at the same time, the Mirror Personality will completely vanish.”
Jiang Ming took the vial in trembling hands. He looked at Xiao Ya with determination in his eyes. “No matter what happens, remember that I am real.”
Xiao Ya nodded, tears glistening in her eyes.
Slowly, Jiang Ming brought the potion to his lips and swallowed it in one gulp. Instantly, a powerful force erupted within him; he felt his consciousness being pulled apart as if he were falling endlessly.
“No!” Jiang Ming shouted as his body began to turn transparent; the power of the Mirror Personality rapidly eroded his awareness.
The scientist looked at everything with a hint of helplessness on his face. "Jiang Ming, are you really sure you want to do this?"
Jiang Ming struggled to open his eyes; his body had become semi-transparent, and he could feel himself gradually fading away. "I... I am real... I believe in myself..."
At that moment, Jiang Ming's consciousness was suddenly enveloped by a powerful force, and he felt himself being pulled into a dark vortex. At the center of the vortex, he saw a reflection in a mirror—an unfamiliar yet familiar face.
"Jiang Ming, you can't escape," the voice from the reflection echoed again. "You are me, and I am you."
Jiang Ming felt his consciousness being continuously tugged at, unable to distinguish what was real and what was false. He closed his eyes, desperately trying to recall fragmented memories, seeking the truth that belonged to him.
"No!" Jiang Ming shouted, and suddenly his consciousness became clear. He felt as if he had regained control of his body.
He opened his eyes and found himself standing in a strange room, everything around him feeling both alien and familiar. He walked to the mirror and looked at himself; it was a face he had never seen before, but his eyes were filled with determination.
"I am real," Jiang Ming whispered, his voice trembling yet filled with strength.
He had finally found his true self.
