My mother-in-law claimed that fresh fetal hair could enhance beauty and suggested that I be cut open to retrieve it for my child.
Zhao Li, putting on an act, slapped my mother-in-law in anger.
As I lay on the bed with my eyes closed, numb to everything, I overheard my husband and mother-in-law plotting.
They were discussing whether giving me medication to induce a miscarriage would affect the quality of the beauty treatment, worrying that if the pregnancy lasted too long, it wouldn't be fresh anymore.
To think that the child I had been eagerly anticipating was seen as nothing more than a beauty remedy by my husband and mother-in-law.
I trembled as I pressed my hand tightly over my mouth; I would not let anyone who harmed my child go unpunished!
Lying in bed, I listened to my mother-in-law and Zhao Li conspiring outside.
“Have you disposed of the leftover medicine properly?”
“Don’t worry, it all went down the drain; there’s no way they’ll find anything.”
Zhao Li took a few puffs from his cigarette, coughed a couple of times, and continued,
“Tonight, you need to go to the mortuary, bring back the baby, cut off some hair, and send it to Zhao Ling.”
“What about her belly?”
“I’ve already paid the doctor; just tell them she had a miscarriage and can’t have children anymore.”
Zhao Li's eyes gleamed with malice. “Tomorrow we’ll get her sterilized; I don’t want any children from her anyway!”
My mother-in-law seemed enlightened. “You really have a way; now Zhao Ling is saved.”
I recalled how my mother-in-law would wake up at five every morning to prepare medicine for me.
She would kindly say, “This is wild ginseng I bought early in the morning; it’s very nourishing for the baby inside you!”
Little did I know that these medicines were the key to taking my child's life.
I lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling fan buzzing above me.
Outside, the voice of Zhao Li could be heard.
"I promised Zhao Ling that I would make her beautiful for a lifetime."
"Besides, the child in her belly is mine."
"How can I let my child call someone else 'dad'?"
His mother chuckled a few times.
"I heard this child is already six months old. My grandson, how could it possibly be someone else's?"
Zhao Li laughed as well. "Anyway, that fool is locked up at home and can't come out."
"Just say that the child belongs to the fool."
"When the time comes to lock him up, it will be up to me!"
"I must say, you're clever to let that fool take the fall!"
"Alright, go collect the body."
"Be sure to cut off the child's scalp and send it to Zhao Ling. I'm afraid she'll get anxious waiting!"
After Zhao Li finished speaking, he pushed the door open and came in.
He cautiously walked over to my side.
Gently touching my forehead, he softly called my name.
"Wife, wife."
I slowly opened my eyes, pretending to be in agony from the wound, tears of grievance welling at the corners of my eyes.
Zhao Li hurriedly pressed me back down onto the bed.
"Don't move! Be careful with your wound!"
He used his hand to smooth back the stray hair from my forehead.
"Wife, the child in your belly didn't have its feet properly formed; that's why it was lost. Don't be sad."
I looked into Zhao Li's concerned eyes.
A chill ran through me.
He wasn't worried about me at all.
His concern was for Zhao Ling and the child she carried.
"It's all my fault; I didn't protect our baby well enough."
Zhao Li held my hand tightly, speaking earnestly.
"Wife, do you know? You have always been far more important to me than the child!"
His grip on my hand tightened even more.
Yet, I felt increasingly nauseous.
If it hadn't been for that night when he got drunk and we ended up together, I thought I wouldn't be lying here now.
The next day, I woke up.
The doctor informed me that I had lost the ability to conceive.
I was bleeding heavily and needed a blood transfusion.
