"Zhi Yi, look, this is the jade hairpin I carved for you by hand. Do you like it?" Ji Hanzhou gently handed me a jade hairpin, intricately carved with a Double Lotus.
I took it in both hands, my fingertips brushing over the delicate patterns, and a wave of sweetness surged in my heart. The Double Lotus, with its two flowers on one stem, symbolized the unity of husband and wife.
Ji Hanzhou and I had grown up together as childhood friends, and over the past three years, our feelings had deepened. We had already made a marriage pact. After tonight, we would be engaged.
"Zhi Yi, it's time to finalize your marriage with Han Zhou," my father said with a smile, his eyes filled with pride.
I lowered my head, my cheeks flushing as I stole a glance at Ji Hanzhou, only to find him gazing at me with tender affection. In that moment, I could almost see a glimpse of our happy future together. We would have a beautiful wedding, a warm home, and perhaps even a few lovely children.
Just as I was lost in this delightful fantasy, my frail younger half-sister, Shen Qingyuan, appeared at the banquet table, her complexion pale. She swayed unsteadily as if she might collapse at any moment.
To my astonishment, I noticed she was wearing an identical jade hairpin to the one in my hand. How could this be? The hairpins were a pair; Han Zhou had said he had treasured them for a long time and only gifted me one today. Why did Qingyuan have the same pin?
"Qingyuan, I told you to stay in your room! Why are you out here?" Aunt Zhou quickly stood up to support her.
"I... I have a terrible pain in my stomach..." Qingyuan said weakly, pressing her hand tightly against her abdomen.
Ji Hanzhou's reaction sent a jolt through me. His expression changed dramatically as he leaped to Qingyuan's side, supporting her while urgently asking, "Qingyuan, where do you feel unwell?"
I had never seen Han Zhou so flustered before. The worry and anxiety in his eyes were more genuine than when he looked at me.
"I... I think I might be giving birth..." Qingyuan clutched Ji Hanzhou's hand tightly, tears welling in her eyes.
"What?!" Everyone was shocked, including me.
My cousin is pregnant before marriage, and this is a huge scandal!
What’s even more terrifying is that Han Zhou's reaction doesn’t seem like he’s hearing unexpected news; it feels as if he has known all along.
“Han Zhou, what are you standing there for? Hurry and take Qingyuan to the clinic!” Uncle Ji urged anxiously.
I stood frozen in place, my heart racing, waiting for Han Zhou to explain.
He would say this is a misunderstanding, right?
He would tell everyone that he has nothing to do with Qingyuan, right?
But then Ji Hanzhou suddenly knelt down before my father and said slowly, “Uncle, the child in Qingyuan’s belly is mine.”
Those six words were like six sharp knives, carving away at my heart inch by inch.
I stared wide-eyed, unable to believe my ears.
This can’t be true!
We clearly loved each other!
Just the day before yesterday, he said he wanted to grow old with me!
With a loud bang, I felt my mind go blank.
My father spat out a mouthful of blood and collapsed!
“Master!” “Father!” “Master Shen!” The scene instantly descended into chaos.
I stood there as if nailed to the ground, unable to muster the strength to move.
Watching Ji Hanzhou hurriedly take Qingyuan away, seeing relatives point fingers at me and whisper among themselves.
Their voices were like sharp needles, each word piercing through my eardrums.
“How shameless! She hasn’t even married yet and is seducing men!”
“Exactly! She’s worse than her cousin; at least her cousin is pregnant!”
“All her knowledge and decorum are just pretense; in reality, she shamelessly seduces her brother-in-law!”
They actually think I am the shameless one?
I wanted to laugh, but I found I couldn’t even lift the corners of my mouth.
In the chaos, I was pushed aside by the crowd, helplessly watching as my father was carried away. I wanted to follow, but mother Ji stopped me.
She wore an awkward smile, but her eyes were filled with calculation. “Zhi Yi, about this matter…” mother Ji hesitated, her gaze flickering.
I let out a cold laugh. “Aunt, there’s no need to say more. Let’s put the engagement aside.”
A year of sweet romance and three years of childhood companionship turned out to be nothing but a deception.
“Oh dear, don’t!” mother Ji grabbed my arm. “ Han Zhou … he was just confused for a moment. A girl like you, Younger Half-Sister, how could you be the main wife? Don’t worry, once the child is born, we’ll send her away, and you will still be our the Ji Family ’s daughter-in-law!”
I could hardly believe my ears. In their eyes, my dignity as Shen Zhi Yi was so cheap.
Rage surged through me in an instant. “Are you suggesting that I become someone’s second wife? A stepmother?”
“What’s wrong with that…” mother Ji tried to say more, but I felt the world spinning around me. Everything went black, and I lost consciousness.
When I awoke again, it was already the next day. I lay in my own bed, staring at the familiar room that now felt utterly strange. Everything from last night felt like a nightmare—but it wasn’t.
“Miss, you’re awake?” The maid Xiao Cui entered with a bowl of medicine.
“Xiao Cui, where’s my father?” I asked urgently.
“Master… he’s still unconscious,” Xiao Cui said, her eyes red-rimmed.
My heart sank heavily. My father had suffered such a shock because of me; if anything happened to him, what would I do? My hands clenched tightly around the blanket, my nails nearly digging into my skin.
Father, please don’t let anything happen to you.
“And Han Zhou?” I asked again, my voice so cold that even I barely recognized it.
“He… he is taking care of the young lady,” Xiao Cui replied softly.
My heart has completely turned cold.
