My father's condition fluctuated between good and bad, and I watched him grow thinner day by day. Each time I had to give him medicine, his tightly closed eyes filled me with dread.
"Father, please wake up. I’m scared..." I couldn’t bear to think about what I would do if anything happened to him.
On that day, an anonymous letter arrived at our residence. As I opened the envelope, my heart sank. The letter read: "Master Shen, your daughter's fiancé is having an affair with her Half-Sister, turning your daughter into a laughingstock. How can you still hold your head high in court? It would be better for you to resign and return home to avoid further embarrassment!"
My hand trembled, causing the letter to fall to the ground. Just then, a loud thud echoed behind me. Turning around, I saw that my father had woken up at some point and was struggling to get up, but he collapsed on the floor, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.
"Father!" I screamed as I rushed over, frantically calling for a doctor.
The doctor arrived quickly. After examining my father, he looked grave as he said to me, "Miss, your father's health is already fragile. This recent shock may..."
I trembled all over, tears streaming down my face. "Doctor, please! You must save my father!"
The doctor sighed and put away his silver needles. "I will do my best for the Old Man, but the situation is not optimistic."
I knelt on the ground, stunned and motionless. It was all my fault; I felt useless for not being able to protect him and for bringing this trouble upon him.
At that moment, the steward rushed in breathlessly. "Miss! It's bad! There’s a crowd outside claiming they’ve come to see a joke!"
I sprang to my feet, fury boiling inside me. How dare they be so brazen!
I strode out of the door and saw a group of ladies adorned in gold and silver discussing among themselves outside our gate. Leading them was Ji Hanzhou's sister, Ji Ruo Xue.
She sneered at me. "Oh, isn't this Miss Shen?"
I struggled to contain my anger and gritted my teeth. "Miss Ji, please show some respect. My father is unwell and cannot receive guests right now; I ask you all to leave."
"Ha," Ji Ruo Xue sneered, "Shen Zhi Yi, you really know how to put on a show. Abandoned by my brother, and now even your future father-in-law doesn't recognize you. What face do you have left to stay in the capital?"
Each of her words pierced my heart like a knife. I trembled all over, tears welling in my eyes, yet I stubbornly refused to let them fall.
"Enough!" A commanding voice suddenly rang out.
I turned around to see my Uncle, Shen Changfeng.
"Uncle..." I choked out.
Shen Changfeng coldly surveyed the crowd. "Everyone, my niece may have encountered misfortune, but the Shen Family's dignity remains intact. If anyone dares to cause trouble here again, don't blame me, Shen Changfeng, for being rude!"
Seeing this, the crowd reluctantly dispersed. Before leaving, Ji Ruo Xue couldn't help but turn back and scoff, "What are you pretending for? You're just a discarded woman!"
I bit my lip, my fingers digging into my palm until it almost bled.
Uncle patted my shoulder. "Let's go inside and talk."
I followed him back into the inner room and could no longer hold it together; I collapsed into his arms and cried loudly. All the grievances and pain of these days poured out at that moment.
"Uncle," I sobbed, "what should I do? Father... he..."
Shen Changfeng gently patted my back. "Don't be afraid; Uncle is here. But, Zhi Yi, you need to leave the capital for a while."
I looked up at him in confusion.
"Your Second Aunt has a sister in the south," Shen Changfeng sighed. "I've already written to her. You should go there to avoid the storm; we can talk about everything once it blows over."
I bit my lip, feeling a mix of emotions inside me. Leaving the capital meant leaving Father and the place I had lived for twenty years. But I knew this was the best choice.
"Alright," I wiped my tears away. "I'll listen to Uncle."
With that, I packed a simple bag and prepared to head south. Before I left, I took one last look at Father, who lay unconscious.
Bending down, I whispered softly in his ear, "Father, I am unfilial and must leave for a while. You must get better and wait for my return."
A tear seemed to slip from the corner of his eye.
My heart ached fiercely, but I dared not linger any longer.
I packed my belongings and boarded the carriage heading south.
