In the first year after graduation, I was injured while doing a good deed and was transferred from being an auxiliary police officer to the archives room.
Here, I unexpectedly caught a fugitive.
My uncle drove over to bring me lunch. After interrogating the fugitive, I called my uncle into the reception room with a grim expression.
He sat there uneasily, gripping a disposable cup filled with hot water tightly in both hands.
I broke the silence, “Uncle, do you remember Ma Guilan?”
Ma Guilan was a good friend of my mother’s who unfortunately passed away a few years ago.
My uncle’s gaze shifted nervously. “Yes, I remember. Her case has never been solved, right?”
“The case I just interrogated is related to Ma Guilan’s case.”
“What?” My uncle’s cup trembled in his hands, and a few drops splashed onto his wrist.
“This person said that before Ma Guilan died, she kept shouting ‘Xu Yunping harmed me.’ Uncle, do you know what this is about?”
As soon as I finished speaking, my uncle slammed his hand on the table and quickly covered my mouth, his anxious expression evident.
“Xiao Wen, keep your voice down! Be careful not to let anyone hear!”
I pulled his hand away. “Uncle, what is going on? Who is Xu Yunping?”
After a moment of silence, my uncle raised his arm and wiped the sweat from his forehead.
“Xu Yunping is your mother!”
“Xiao Wen, your mom might not have told you about Gui Lan. Let me tell you today.”
As my uncle recounted the story, I gradually began to understand the ins and outs of the situation.
It turned out that my mother and Ma Guilan had been close friends since childhood.
Later, due to family reasons, the two women married different men.
However, their families lived close to each other and often looked out for one another.
Eventually, Ma Guilan was taken care of by a man named Niu Xiaogang, a boss of Shanghai Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, but she escaped back to her hometown.
Then, something terrible happened.
It was a rainy night in early 2001 when the body of Ma Guilan was discovered by villagers who had gone up the mountain to farm.
She was completely naked, with only a black jacket barely covering her body.
The bruises on her skin indicated that she had suffered severe beatings while alive.
The autopsy report was released quickly.
Ma Guilan had died at eleven o'clock the previous night, with the cause of death being acute myocardial infarction.
There were traces of poison in her system and bodily fluids from an unknown man, suggesting that she had died from shock after being assaulted.
The police quickly identified her boyfriend, Cheng Hao, as a suspect.
Cheng Hao was responsible for guarding the orchard and had seen a strange shadow fleeing from the grove on the night of the incident. He immediately reported this to the orchard manager, Old Li.
The police interrogated Cheng Hao, and his alibi was confirmed. Furthermore, tests showed that his bodily fluids did not match those found in Ma Guilan's body.
The investigation then shifted towards Xu Shengjun, the brother of Xu Yunping.
Xu Shengjun had previously assaulted Ma Guilan due to a misunderstanding, and because Xu Yunping was friends with Ma Guilan...
Frequent visits to Ma Guilan's home led the police to suspect that he might have ulterior motives toward her.
However, the investigation results once again disappointed the police; both Cheng Hao and Xu Shengjun's bodily fluids did not match those found in Ma Guilan's body.
The police then conducted fluid comparisons among all the men in the village but still failed to find a match.
The case fell into a stalemate.
An experienced officer proposed a hypothesis.
He believed that Ma Guilan might have been killed by a fugitive while meeting her boyfriend at night.
This hypothesis was accepted by most of the officers, but due to a lack of concrete evidence,
the police could only input the DNA from the bodily fluids into the system and hastily close the case.
It wasn't until a week ago, while I was organizing the evidence in the archives,
that I unexpectedly discovered a DNA sample in the evidence locker that matched one in the national database,
thus revealing the truth behind the long-closed Ma Guilan Case from over twenty years ago.
