At that moment, a thought suddenly popped into my mind.
If I were the murderer, what would be the first thing I wanted to do after committing the crime?
Of course, it would be to destroy the evidence!
But if I were a witness who had seen the murderer in action, what would I do?
Naturally, I would flee the scene and never get involved again!
Unless...
The witness is the murderer!
I took a deep breath and decided to go find Cheng Hao to get more information.
However, just as I stood up to leave, my phone rang.
It was my partner, Li Yang.
"Hey, Xiao Wen, where are you?"
"I'm at home."
"Come over quickly; we have a new discovery!"
Cheng Hao's home was located at the west end of the village, near the orchard.
Most families in the village had moved to the town or city, leaving only a few elderly residents clinging to their old houses.
As a result, the once bustling village now appeared somewhat desolate.
I knocked on the door, and a deep male voice came from inside.
"Who is it?"
"Hello, Mr. Cheng. I'm Xu Wen, and I would like to talk to you about the Ma Guilan case."
"Xu Wen?"
There was a moment of silence from within, followed by the sound of footsteps.
Creak—
The door opened.
Before me stood a middle-aged man with graying hair.
He wore a dark gray coat, and his skin was darkened by time, making him look much older than I remembered.
Upon seeing me, he clearly froze for a moment before quickly regaining his composure.
“Oh, it’s you!”
I politely bowed.
“Hello, Mr. Cheng. I would like to talk to you about Aunt Gui Lan.”
Cheng Hao smiled awkwardly, took the fruit I brought, and welcomed me into the house.
As soon as I stepped inside, I sensed something was off.
The walls were adorned with various deities, and the table was set with fresh apples, bananas, and an assortment of pastries, along with a few lit candles.
It all seemed rather eerie.
Noticing my unease, Cheng Hao chuckled and explained, “It’s nothing much; today just happens to be the twenty-fifth anniversary of Gui Lan’s passing. I prepared some offerings according to tradition.”
I nodded and pointed at the deities, asking, “Mr. Cheng, do you usually worship these as well?”
Cheng Hao scratched his head apologetically.
"Not really, I just pay my respects according to tradition every year."
I see.
However, judging by his earlier actions, he seemed somewhat dismissive, not genuinely engaged in the worship.
I withdrew my gaze and got straight to the point.
"Mr. Cheng, I would like to ask you about the Ma Guilan case."
Cheng Hao nodded, indicating for me to continue.
"I heard that on the night of the incident, you witnessed a shadow fleeing from the orchard?"
Cheng Hao's expression instantly darkened.
"Yes."
"Did you get a clear look at that person's face?"
"No."
"Do you know who that person is?"
Cheng Hao paused for a moment and then let out a sigh.
"Xiao Wen, I know what you're investigating."
"Your Uncle came to see me a few days ago."
I was taken aback.
My uncle had visited Cheng Hao?
Why didn't he tell me?
Cheng Hao continued speaking.
"Your Uncle said he has already found the murderer."
What?
I could hardly believe my ears.
My uncle found the murderer just a few days ago?
Why didn't he tell me?
And if Uncle really found the murderer, why didn't he just say it directly?
Instead, he chose to go into hiding?
Unless...
The murderer has some connection to Uncle!
Cheng Hao sighed.
"He said it was Aunt Xu who did it."
What?
I almost fell off my chair.
"Uncle said it was my mom who killed her?"
Cheng Hao shook his head.
"But I don't really believe it."
I looked at him in confusion.
"What do you mean?"
Cheng Hao's expression grew serious.
