In the interrogation room, a burly police officer swung a whip, pointing at the suspended Tang Wan and shouted, “Don’t think you can fool me! Reveal your accomplices and contacts, and you might suffer less. When this whip comes down, it will surely leave you in agony.” As he spoke, he dipped the whip into a bucket of bright red chili water.
“That’s what I stole to sell,” Tang Wan said, her arms aching from being hung up, yet she gritted her teeth and insisted it was stolen.
“I say it’s stolen, so it’s stolen. Are you trying to force a confession?” Tang Wan shouted defiantly. But upon seeing the long, thick whip, fear crept into her heart. Even so, she refused to betray the director. The situation was tense, with two parties in conflict and the government strictly preventing drugs from reaching the frontline. If secrets were leaked, many Frontline Warriors would be put in danger.
Lost in thought, a sharp crack echoed as the whip struck her hard. Her shoulder instantly split open, searing pain coursing through her.
“You can endure quite a bit; it seems you won’t shed tears until you see the coffin. Will you talk or not?” Another lash came down.
Tang Wan let out a muffled groan, biting down hard. However, she had always been delicate and weak; she could hardly withstand these two lashes, and her vision began to blur. In her daze, she saw the door kicked open forcefully, a group of people rushed in, followed by a cacophony of noise. Finally, she fell into a warm and broad embrace.
Love Comes Swiftly
After enduring two lashes, Tang Wan felt as if her entire skeleton was about to fall apart. It felt like she had slept for a long time or walked a great distance. In her haze, she saw her brother’s figure ahead. But when he turned around, he transformed into Chu Yixuan. Chu Yixuan reached out his hand to her, and without hesitation, she grasped it; that warm touch instantly spread warmth throughout her body.
“Wan'er,” Chu Yixuan called softly.
Tang Wan slowly opened her eyes to see Chu Yixuan’s reddened eyes. He said excitedly, “You’re finally awake.”
“Have I been asleep for long?” Tang Wan asked weakly.
“Two days,” Chu Yixuan said carefully as he helped her sit up. “The doctor said your injuries need some time to heal; you should stay here until you recover. If I had arrived any later, you might not have made it. Why are you so foolish?”
"I was just thinking that if I could save my own life, I could save many others," Tang Wan said softly.
"Your thoughts are always unique, but this time you were right. The director is very grateful to you."
"Unfortunately, I didn't complete the mission," Tang Wan said, lowering her head in guilt.
"I've already finished it for you. Don't worry; a lot of supplies will be sent to the front lines. Your two lashes were not in vain."
Tang Wan smiled happily. As long as Chu Yixuan was involved, everything would be handled perfectly. She sincerely said, "Thank you."
"What are you planning to do to thank me?" Chu Yixuan asked playfully.
Tang Wan pouted and muttered, "I have nothing to give you. How can I thank you?"
"How about offering yourself?" Chu Yixuan leaned closer, his gaze intense.
Tang Wan's face flushed bright red, and she stammered, "You... you can't be serious?"
"I am serious," Chu Yixuan replied earnestly, taking her hand in his.
Tang Wan's heart raced like a rabbit trapped in her chest. To receive Chu Yixuan's love made all her injuries worth it. She smiled foolishly but suddenly remembered something and quickly asked, "By the way, have you found out who leaked the information about me delivering medicine? If it weren't for someone snitching, I wouldn't have gotten hurt and received those lashes."
As the days passed, Tang Wan began to doubt whether Chu Yixuan truly loved her. Finally, one day, Liu Ruyi's appearance brought the mystery closer to resolution.
"It's been a long time since I last saw you." Tang Wan sat on the swing in the yard, holding a book. She looked up to see Liu Ruyi striding towards her, and surprisingly, the gatekeeper did not stop her.
"Brother Xuan told me not to disturb you, so I haven't come. But you lingering at our house is something I can no longer tolerate." Liu Ruyi's tone was filled with hostility from the very start.
"Lingering at your house?" Tang Wan frowned and retorted.
"You know I'm the daughter of Brother Xuan's wet nurse. What you don't know is that Brother Xuan's mother died during childbirth. My mother didn't keep a single drop of milk for me to ensure he had enough. So before the master passed away, he made a will stating that no matter who becomes the young mistress of the Chu Family, I would always be a concubine to repay my mother's kindness." Liu Ruyi said with a smug smile.
Tang Wan's fingers stiffened slightly as she forced herself to remain calm, giving a faint smile. "That seems to be your one-sided wish. Yixuan doesn't love you and will never marry you."
Liu Ruyi snorted coldly and continued, "Are you sure he will marry you? There's something you probably don't know. A year ago, on the day of his wedding with Shen Family Young Lady, someone suddenly appeared and took away the bride, embarrassing Brother Xuan. That person was your brother, Tang Wei. Hmph, do you really think Brother Xuan would marry the sister of the man who stole his bride?"
"Why are you telling me this? I won't believe your word alone," Tang Wan replied coldly, her fingers trembling involuntarily. After her sister-in-law Shen Qingfang married into the family, she indeed severed ties with her family in Shanghai.
Under Chu Yixuan's attentive care, Tang Wan's injuries healed rapidly. Initially, she planned to move back to share an apartment with Bao Zhu, but Chu Yixuan firmly disagreed and insisted she stay at Chu Mansion. With his parents long gone, Chu Yixuan was now the sole master of the Chu Family, and naturally, Tang Wan seemed to have become the lady of Chu Mansion. However, this leisurely and comfortable life gradually began to bore her. She missed her family in Suzhou dearly and repeatedly expressed her desire to go back for a visit and asked Chu Yixuan to propose to his parents, but each time he found various excuses to brush her off.
One day, while sitting on the swing in the yard reading, Liu Ruyi intruded uninvited. "Everyone in the Chu Family knows about this matter. You should be aware of Brother Xuan's temperament; he always repays grudges." Liu Ruyi raised her chin arrogantly and said, "I'm just kindly reminding you that if you really fall for him, you'll be in for a disaster. He only wants revenge on your brother; once he's tired of playing with you, he'll discard you."
Upon hearing this, Tang Wan's face turned pale instantly as the book in her hands fell with a loud thud onto the grass. The swing lost its support and swayed emptily.
