I returned to the Lin Family Old Residence with Pei Jin. This place was filled with memories of my father and me, and it might also hide his final secrets.
We turned the entire old house upside down, searching through the hidden compartments in the study, the loft in the bedroom, and even the rockery in the garden, but found nothing.
"Could it be... something your mother left behind?" Pei Jin suggested.
My mother? She had passed away from illness when I was very young. She left behind very few things, which I had carefully stored in a jewelry box.
I retrieved the Zitan Wood jewelry box, which contained some of my mother's favorite jewelry and a few letters she had written to me. I examined each item, but nothing seemed particularly special.
Just as I was about to give up, my fingers brushed against the bottom of the jewelry box.
Huh? It felt... like there was a second layer?
I carefully pried open the bottom panel, and sure enough, there was a hidden compartment beneath! Inside, there was only a thin card made of a special material, completely devoid of any text, just some seemingly random symbols.
"What is this..." I handed it to Pei Jin.
Pei Jin took the card and examined it closely. His expression changed sharply. "This is a Quantum Encryption Key Card. That list should be encrypted and stored on a secure network node somewhere; only this card can decrypt and access it."
My dad was impressive! He had managed to acquire such high-tech equipment!
"So... where is the node?"
"This requires technical hacking. Leave it to me." Pei Jin carefully tucked away the card. "Lin Yao, once the list is made public, 'they' will surely panic and retaliate at all costs. Are you... ready?"
I looked at him. "I've been ready since the moment I was reborn."
No matter who the opponent was or how powerful they might be, I had to avenge my father! Those filthy crimes must be exposed!
Pei Jin utilized his resources and top-notch technical team, spending three days to finally crack the key card. He located the hidden network node and successfully downloaded the decrypted "List"!
The names on that list were shocking! They included several big shots from both political and business circles, some of whom I had once looked up to!
This was an extensive web of corruption!
Without hesitation, Pei Jin and I immediately submitted this list along with other evidence from the hard drive through the safest channels to the highest disciplinary inspection department of the country.
Now all we could do was wait.

Every day, the news reported on high-ranking officials being placed under investigation and wealthy tycoons being detained. The entire country was undergoing a thorough cleansing. As the initial whistleblowers, Pei Jin and I had our identities strictly protected.
Of course, there were various speculations from the outside world, but no one could connect this storm to me, a girl who had just taken over her family business. I remained hidden in the shadows, my contributions unrecognized.
The Lin Family Group managed to avoid collaboration with those who had fallen from grace, emerging from this storm not only unscathed but also gaining greater development opportunities due to the reshuffling of market dynamics. The cases involving Gu Chen and Lin Jianshan were re-examined due to their connection to the List incident, resulting in harsher penalties and completely eliminating any chance of redemption.
Finally, everything settled down. My father's spirit could rest in peace now.
On this day, I found myself unusually free. Sitting by the floor-to-ceiling window in my office, I basked in the sunlight while contemplating my next small goal—perhaps getting the Lin Group into the Fortune Global 500?
Pei Jin pushed the door open and walked in. He stood against the light, his tall figure obscured from view, but his tone carried a hint of… resentment?
"Lin, now that peace has returned to the world, shouldn't you consider my 'personal matters'?" he asked.
I raised an eyebrow. "What personal matters?"
He stepped closer and pulled something out from his pocket… a red booklet? Oh no, it wasn't a marriage certificate; it was a Household Register. He slammed it down on my desk.
"My great-uncle, before he passed away, entrusted me with protecting you and finding the List. He also mentioned…" Pei Jin cleared his throat, his ears seemingly turning a bit red. "If I successfully completed this task, he would consider it fulfilling a wish of your father's… allowing me to propose to you with that Dowry Hard Drive your father left behind."
I was taken aback. "Dowry Hard Drive?! Isn’t that filled with evidence of Gu Chen and Lin Jianshan’s crimes?!"
Seeing my shocked expression, Pei Jin's lips curled into a triumphant smile as he pulled out another identical black hard drive from his pocket.
"Here, this is the real Dowry Hard Drive. Inside is the transfer agreement for 30% of Pei Group shares that Uncle Lin prepared for you, along with... the order for one of the hundred globally limited edition supercars.
I looked at the hard drive, then at the Household Register in his hand, and finally at his strikingly handsome face that could make anyone envious.
"So... Mr. Pei came today to propose?"
"Not exactly a proposal," Pei Jin leaned closer to me, his breath warm against my skin. "It's more like... applying for a permanent position with certification."
Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, warm and inviting.
It seemed... not entirely unacceptable?
