In the second year of university, the wave of Reform and Opening-up surged even more fiercely. Individual Business Owners and Ten-Thousand Yuan Households began to emerge, and venturing into business was no longer seen as mere speculation but rather an activity that was tacitly accepted and even encouraged.
I knew my opportunity had arrived!
I could no longer be satisfied with my small-scale Dried Fruit business. I needed a larger, more formal platform. My sights turned to the Clothing industry.
In the early 1980s, people's material lives began to flourish, and their pursuit of beauty awakened. The monotonous blue, gray, and green were gradually being phased out, replaced by innovative styles and vibrant colors in Clothing that began to gain popularity. Especially Bell-Bottoms, Bat Shirts, and dresses—these garments, which would later be seen as nostalgic, were the height of fashion at the time!
With my forward-thinking aesthetic and understanding of future fashion trends over the next few decades, I was fully capable of seizing this wave of "fashion dividends"!
However, I had no money and no connections; it seemed like a pipe dream for a poor student to start a Clothing factory.
I decided to start small, leveraging my design advantage. During my spare time, I began sketching Clothing designs. Instead of copying styles from the future, I combined the aesthetic characteristics of the 1980s with practical conditions to create unique designs that were trendy and easy to produce.
Then, I found a small town near the capital known for its Clothing processing—Baigou. There were many family-run workshops there that offered cheap processing fees but lacked good designs and sales channels.
Armed with my design sketches, I approached a reasonably sized tailor shop run by an astute old tailor. I proposed that I would provide the designs and some key materials while they would handle pattern-making, production, and sales, sharing the profits.
At first, the old tailor was skeptical. But when he saw my designs, his eyes lit up! Those styles were unlike anything he had encountered in his decades of making clothes—bold and beautiful!
With a mindset of giving it a try, he produced a few samples and displayed them in his shop. To everyone's surprise, they sold out quickly! Those uniquely styled shirts and dresses were snatched up immediately! Some even came from the city specifically to place orders!
The old tailor was overjoyed! He immediately decided to collaborate with me long-term!
Our cooperation model was simple: I provided designs, controlled core material supplies, and participated in pricing and marketing strategy formulation; the old tailor handled production and daily sales management.
To establish our brand, I named our Clothing line "Ni Chang," meaning garments as beautiful as a rainbow.
"Ni Chang" Clothing quickly rose in prominence in Baigou and surrounding markets due to its unique designs, relatively good quality, and precise market positioning! Business boomed!
In just six months, I earned my first "ten thousand yuan," becoming a bona fide Ten-Thousand Yuan Household! This was an astronomical figure at the time!
With money in hand, I felt more confident! I began to scale up operations beyond just the old tailor's shop by collaborating with multiple workshops in Baigou to form a small production network. I also hired several trustworthy classmates to help me manage market outreach and bookkeeping.
My business acumen began to truly shine through. Shen Junyan learned about my "side business." He was surprised but more so appreciative and supportive. Leveraging his connections as a local resident of the capital, he helped me establish some relationships and introduced potential clients. Even during his spare time, he voluntarily assisted me with bookkeeping and market data analysis.
