I stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, the night as dark as ink, the city lights twinkling like scattered stars.
Below, the distant roar of car engines disrupted the tranquility.
Before long, a sharp screech of brakes pierced the night, followed by a heavy crash.
A chill ran down my spine, and an ominous premonition arose within me.
“President Fu, He Chengqing is here,” Lin Zhu's voice came from behind me, laced with a hint of caution.
I turned around, my brow furrowed. “Let him in.”
Soon, He Chengqing's figure appeared at the door of the study.
He reeked of alcohol, his steps unsteady, a contemptuous smile plastered on his face. “Oh, if it isn’t President Fu? What’s wrong? Hiding here alone to drown your sorrows?”
I shot him a cold glare, remaining silent. He Chengqing staggered closer and reached out to pat my face.
“It’s been ten years, and you’re still this pathetic. Nan Yi must feel so wronged being with you.”
I grabbed his wrist and forcefully flung him away. “He Chengqing, you’d better show some respect.”
He stumbled back a few steps, nearly losing his balance.
Regaining his footing against the desk, a glint of malice flashed in his eyes.
“Respect? Do you even deserve it? Nan Yi only loves me; you’re just an ATM,” he sneered, pulling a diamond necklace from his pocket and waving it in front of me.
“Do you see this necklace? This is the Wedding Anniversary Gift you gave to Nan Yi, right? She passed it on to me right away. Isn’t that ridiculous?”
My hand instinctively tightened into a fist, my knuckles turning white.
This necklace was something I had carefully chosen, engraved with the names of Shen Nanxin and me.
He Chengqing, seeing my silence, grew even more arrogant.
“What’s wrong? Feeling hurt? It’s a pity that Nan Yi’s heart isn’t with you. She told me that every day with you is torture; only with me does she feel true happiness.”
As he spoke, he leaned closer, his tone flippant. “You know what? This afternoon, Nan Yi and I…”
I didn’t hear the rest of his words.
Images of Shen Nanxin and He Chengqing together flashed repeatedly in my mind.
Ten years of what I thought was happiness turned out to be nothing but a joke.
“Shut up!” I growled, grabbing He Chengqing by the collar and pushing him against the wall.
“What right do you have to mention her? You’re just a worthless leech living off women!”
He Chengqing was startled by my sudden outburst, a flicker of panic crossing his eyes.
“W-What do you want?”
I looked at him, my gaze icy.
“I warn you, stay away from Nan Yi from now on, or I won’t let you off easily.”
He Chengqing struggled, trying to break free from my grip.
"Let go of me! If you dare to hit me, Nan Yi won't let you off!"
"I don't know if she will let me off, but right now, I really want to hit you."
As I spoke, I swung my fist toward He Chengqing's face.
He Chengqing was left with a bruised face and blood at the corner of his mouth. He covered his face, looking at me in terror. "Are you crazy?"
I pushed him away, and he fell to the ground, his eyes filled with fear.
Seeing him in such a pathetic state filled me with a sense of satisfaction.
He Chengqing scrambled to his feet and stumbled out of the study.
I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window and looked down. He Chengqing staggered into his car, started the engine, and sped away from the villa.
"President Fu, should I send someone to follow him?" Lin Zhu asked softly from behind me.
I shook my head. "No need, let him go."
I watched the taillights of the car disappear into the distance, feeling a sense of calm wash over me.
