The weather can change in an instant. Just moments after the school bell rang, a heavy downpour began outside, with no sign of letting up.
I stood at the entrance of the teaching building, staring blankly at the curtain of rain that turned everything outside into a blur of white. The weather had been perfectly fine in the morning; who could have predicted such a sudden storm? I hadn’t brought an umbrella today.
Around me, classmates without umbrellas huddled at the door, sighing in frustration. Some were calling their parents for a ride, while others were preparing to squeeze under the cover of friends’ umbrellas. I glanced at my phone; my parents were both working late today, so I couldn’t rely on them. Lu Yu… he probably left early for his club activities this afternoon.
The rain intensified, mixed with wind that made it feel even colder. I tightened my jacket and contemplated whether to wait for the rain to ease or just make a run for it. It was only a ten-minute walk from school to home; surely, if I dashed through it… I wouldn’t catch a cold, right?
Just as I took a deep breath, ready to charge into the downpour like a valiant warrior, a black umbrella suddenly appeared in front of me, blocking most of the wind and rain.
Underneath it was Lu Yu’s familiar face.
“What are you standing there for? Waiting for the rain to give you an award?” He raised an eyebrow, his tone as teasing as ever.
“Aren’t you supposed to be at your club activity?” I was a bit surprised.
“Finished early,” he replied succinctly, then lightly poked my arm with the umbrella handle. “Come over.”
I hesitated for a moment but eventually moved under his umbrella.
It wasn’t particularly large, and being so close together made the space feel cramped. The raindrops pelted against the umbrella, creating a dense rhythm of sound.
We walked side by side toward the exit. To avoid getting wet, we leaned in close; my arm was almost pressed against his. I could distinctly smell the clean scent of soap mixed with a hint of dampness from his uniform.
Instinctively, I shifted slightly away to create some distance.
“What are you hiding from?” His deep voice came from above me. “If you keep moving away, you’ll fall out.”
I looked up at him and noticed that he had already gotten his right shoulder slightly wet to give me more space. Raindrops dripped from his hair tips, a few strands sticking to his forehead.
My heart inexplicably raced faster for a moment, and I quickly lowered my gaze to the puddles beneath my feet. “N-nothing.”
We walked in silence, accompanied only by the sound of rain and our footsteps splashing through puddles. This quiet closeness felt more awkward than our usual noisy banter. A subtle, sticky tension hung in the air.
Unable to resist, I stole another glance at him. His profile was sharply defined; his jawline was taut as if he were deep in thought. The streetlight's glow filtered through the rain curtain and flickered across his face.
“Is it nice?” He suddenly turned his head, our eyes meeting directly.
I felt like a caught thief and quickly looked down, my cheeks warming instantly. “Who… who’s looking at you!”
He chuckled softly; that sound seemed to cut through the rain and reach my ears directly, sending shivers down my spine.
“Oh,” he elongated his tone playfully, “then what are you looking at?”
“Looking at the road!” I retorted stubbornly.
"Well, the road looks nice," he said casually, as if the brief moment of eye contact and my embarrassment were merely figments of my imagination.
The short journey felt unusually long today. Finally, I reached the familiar hallway entrance and could hardly wait to escape the cramped space beneath the umbrella.
"We're here," he announced, stopping in his tracks to close the umbrella and shake off the droplets of water.
"Thanks for walking me back," I mumbled, keeping my head down as I quickly finished my sentence and turned to dash upstairs.
"Lin Wan," he called out to me again.
I halted and turned back to look at him. He stood in the light and shadow of the hallway, water still dripping from his hair as he gazed at me. "Remember to bring an umbrella tomorrow morning."
"Oh... got it," I replied.
He nodded, said nothing more, and turned to head in the direction of his home. I watched his retreating figure until he rounded a corner and disappeared from sight before slowly making my way upstairs.
As I fished out my keys to unlock the door, I leaned against it, still feeling the rapid beating of my heart. Just moments ago, we had been so close under that umbrella... Lu Yu's shoulder was even wet; was it on purpose?
