The annual School Anniversary Gala was one of the few moments of revelry during our high school years. A temporary stage had been set up on the playground, lights were flashing, and the music was deafening, with excited students everywhere. 0

A few classmates and I squeezed into the crowd, watching the performances on stage and occasionally waving our hands to the music. Lu Yu didn't have a performance today, but as a member of the student council, he was busy maintaining order backstage, dressed in a white shirt and black trousers. He would occasionally weave through the crowd, drawing glances from many girls. 0

As the evening progressed, the atmosphere grew more lively. The host announced that it was time for a free dance session. Upbeat music filled the air, and several bold students had already started pulling their partners to the center of the venue. 0

At that moment, Chen Yu appeared out of nowhere and stood in front of me. “Lin Wan, may I have this dance?” he asked with a smile, his demeanor still warm and polite. 0

A small wave of teasing erupted around us. A few girls I was close to nudged me with their elbows, their eyes sparkling with amusement. 0

I hesitated. It felt wrong to refuse him in front of everyone, but agreeing made me instinctively think of Lu Yu. “I... I'm not very good at dancing,” I stammered, searching for a clumsy excuse. 0

“That's okay, I'll lead,” Chen Yu replied, his smile sincere as his hand remained outstretched. 0

I was still torn, trying to find a more polite way to decline when suddenly the crowd behind me jostled. I lost my footing and stumbled forward. Chen Yu quickly caught my arm to steady me. 0

“Be careful,” he said. 0

In that instant, I caught sight of a familiar figure out of the corner of my eye—Lu Yu. He had appeared at some point not far from us, his expression dark and frighteningly grim. The stage lights flickered and dimmed slightly; his position was somewhat obscured, so I couldn't see his exact expression, but I could clearly feel the low pressure radiating from him. 0

The crowd began to chant: “Get together! Get together!” “Chen Yu and Lin Wan make a great pair!” 0

I couldn't tell if it was an issue of perspective or an illusion caused by the lighting, but it seemed Lu Yu's gaze was fixed on Chen Yu's hand that was holding my arm. Instinctively, I tried to pull away, but Chen Yu's grip was firm. 0

In those brief seconds of hesitation, I saw Lu Yu's expression turn icy cold as if frozen over. He said nothing but looked deeply at me with an unreadable disappointment and... a hint of hurt? Then he abruptly turned away and pushed through the crowd without a word, heading in the opposite direction from the stage. 0

“Lu Yu!” Panic surged within me as I instinctively called out for him. 0

Chen Yu seemed to sense that something was off and released his hold on me. “Lin Wan?” 0

But I couldn't focus on him anymore. I wanted to chase after Lu Yu to explain myself, but there were too many people around, and the music was blaring so loudly. I struggled to push forward but was swept further away from where Lu Yu had just left. 0

The stage lights continued to dazzle, and the music remained raucous. Yet my heart sank to the depths. That look from Lu Yu... he must have misunderstood something! 0

He saw Chen Yu supporting me, and hearing the teasing from those around us, he must have thought... thought that I had accepted Chen Yu, or at least that I was hesitating, caught in ambiguity. 0

It was over. 0

A strong sense of unease enveloped me. That guy, Lu Yu, usually appeared carefree, but in reality, he was more sensitive than anyone else and loved to dwell on things. This misunderstanding would likely not be so easy to resolve. 0
