With the foundation of the Charging Treasure Incident, my previous resolve to maintain a deliberate distance began to waver. However, Su Man's presence still loomed like a thorn between Shen Zhi Zhou and me. I could only continue to uphold this awkward state of being neither too distant nor too close, treating everything as a matter of business.
As the new store's opening approached, the project entered its final sprint phase. My meetings with Shen Zhi Zhou increased, mostly during project discussions, and occasionally he would personally come to the Tang Cube kitchen to inspect the dessert preparation process.
He remained taciturn and aloof. Yet sometimes, when our eyes inadvertently met, I could catch a fleeting glimpse of complex emotions swirling in the depths of his gaze—so quick that I almost thought it was an illusion.
That afternoon, we were at the construction site of the new store for final detail confirmations. The site was somewhat noisy and dusty. Shen Zhi Zhou wore a simple white shirt and dress pants, yet he still appeared meticulous as he engaged in serious discussions with the Construction Manager.
I followed closely behind, holding a notebook and occasionally offering suggestions about the arrangement of kitchen equipment.
At that moment, my phone rang. It was a video call from my mother back home.
I stepped into a slightly quieter corner to answer the call. "Hello, Mom."
"Ran Ran, how have you been lately? Is work busy? Are you feeling well?" My mother's familiar voice came through, filled with concern.
"I'm doing well, Mom. Just a bit busy with the project," I replied with a smile.
"That's good," she paused, her tone hesitant. "Um... about that guy your aunt introduced you to, Xiao Zhang—you said you felt okay about him last time, right? He told me today that he wants to take you out for dinner this weekend. What do you think..."
A blind date? My scalp tingled. The last time I went home, my aunt had dragged me to meet an ordinary office worker. I didn't feel anything special and had just given some perfunctory responses; I didn't expect he would take it seriously.
"Mom, I'm really quite busy lately; I might have to work overtime this weekend..." I tried to brush it off.
"Oh come on, you have to eat no matter how busy you are," my mother began her heartfelt persuasion. "Xiao Zhang is quite honest and has a stable job; you..."
As I struggled with how to refuse her, I didn’t notice Shen Zhi Zhou had approached and was standing not far from me, seemingly waiting for me. His expression was neutral, but his gaze was fixed on me.
Under his scrutiny, I felt even more flustered and just wanted to end the call quickly. "Mom, I have things to attend to here; I'll call you back later, okay? Bye!"
Without waiting for her response, I hurriedly ended the video call.
When I looked up again, I met Shen Zhi Zhou's deep-set eyes. His gaze seemed... colder than usual?
"Blind date?" he suddenly spoke up, his tone flat and emotionless.
My heart skipped a beat—did he hear that?!
"N-no," I instinctively denied it and hurriedly explained, "It's just... my family worrying too much..."
He remained silent, merely watching me quietly as if trying to see through my facade.
Feeling increasingly uncomfortable under his gaze, I decided to throw caution to the wind and raised my head defiantly. "So what if it is? I'm not getting any younger; isn't it normal to go on blind dates? President Shen, aren't you being too nosy?"
As soon as the words left my mouth, regret washed over me. What was I doing? Why was I snapping at him?
Shen Zhi Zhou's expression instantly darkened, and the temperature around him seemed to drop to freezing point. He looked at me, his thin lips pressed into a straight line, his gaze icy.
"Indeed," he sneered, his voice as cold as ice. "Miss Lin's personal matters are of no interest to me. I just remind you not to let your 'personal matters' affect your work progress."
With that, he turned away without another glance, leaving me with a cold and resolute back.
His words pierced my heart like a sharp blade, leaving me feeling both pained and bitter. The emotions that had been building up for days erupted suddenly due to this unexpected spark—hurt, anger, disappointment, and that indescribable sense of concern...
"Shen Zhi Zhou!" I shouted at his retreating figure, my voice tinged with tears. "You jerk!"
He paused for a moment but did not turn back, quickly disappearing at the other end of the construction site.
I stood there, unable to hold back the tears any longer.
Yes, I was the fool. He had teased me time and again, given me hope, only to push me away with indifference just as I was about to fall for him. What did he think of me? A subordinate to toy with at will? Or... an inconsequential distraction?
Enough! This really is enough!
Lin Xiaoran, stop being so deluded.
