After the opening ceremony, Shen Zhi Zhou seemed to become even more… elusive. He no longer deliberately avoided me; sometimes he would even take the initiative to speak to me at work, discussing business matters, but his tone was no longer as cold and rigid as before. However, Su Man still occasionally appeared by his side, and their interactions seemed natural and intimate.
This left me feeling like I was on a roller coaster, my emotions rising and falling, causing me great distress.
A turning point occurred in an unexpected setting.
This weekend, the office held a small internal celebration to commemorate the completion of a new project and the opening of the Art Center. Sun Manager specially approved for me to represent the Tang Cube team at the event.
The banquet hall was lively, filled with clinking glasses and cheerful conversations. I found a corner seat, quietly sipping juice and trying to minimize my presence.
As the main guest, Shen Zhi Zhou was busy socializing. Su Man accompanied him like a gracious hostess, and they indeed looked like a perfect match.
In the midst of it all, I stepped out to the terrace for some fresh air. The cool night breeze eased some of my agitation. I was lost in thought, gazing at the distant nightscape when footsteps approached from behind.
It was Su Man.
She held a glass of red wine and walked over to me with a smile. “Miss Lin, are you here alone?”
“Yeah, just getting some fresh air,” I replied politely.
“The night view here is quite nice,” she said, taking a sip of her wine before turning her gaze toward me with a hint of curiosity. “Miss Lin, may I ask if there’s some misunderstanding between you and Zhi Zhou?”
I was taken aback. “Miss Su, what do you mean?”
Su Man smiled knowingly. “I’ve known Zhi Zhou for many years. He may seem cold on the outside, but he’s more sensitive than anyone else and quite… awkward.”
She paused before continuing, “I know he hasn’t been nice to you lately. Actually… that’s because of me.”
I was even more confused. Because of her?
“Zhi Zhou’s parents have always hoped we could be together,” Su Man said candidly, her eyes devoid of any arrogance but filled with a hint of helplessness. “Especially my father; he is close friends with Uncle Shen, and both families are eager for us to unite. Zhi Zhou has been under pressure for a long time, but recently his family has been pushing hard, even reaching out to his company directly. He was in a bad mood during that time and didn’t know how to handle it… perhaps he unintentionally projected some negative emotions onto those around him.”
So that’s how it was? His irritability and coldness during that period were due to family pressure?
“What about you and him…” I couldn’t help but ask.
Su Man looked at me with clear eyes. “I’ve always regarded Zhi Zhou as an older brother, and he sees me as a younger sister. There has never been any romantic feelings between us. This time I returned home to clarify things with our families.” She paused again, her tone becoming serious. “Miss Lin, Zhi Zhou isn’t good at expressing his feelings; he prefers to bear many things alone. But the way he looks at you… it’s different from how he looks at others. I can feel it.”
Her words struck me like lightning, clearing away all the fog in my heart!
Family pressure, parental matchmaking, just siblings…
It turned out that all those restless thoughts that kept me awake at night were merely my own assumptions! And his gaze toward me… was different?
The overwhelming amount of information left my mind blank, yet my heart felt as if it were filled with something, a mix of sourness and pressure.
"He’s the kind of person who becomes clumsy the more he cares," Su Man sighed softly. "That day at the construction site, when he heard your family introducing you to someone, he probably... got jealous, which is why he said such harsh things. He must regret it terribly afterward, but he can't bring himself to apologize."
Jealous? Regret?
My cheeks flushed uncontrollably.
"Miss Lin," Su Man looked at me with sincere eyes, "if you have feelings for him too, why not... give him a little response? That ice mountain of his really needs someone to take the initiative to melt it."
With that, she smiled at me and turned to leave the terrace.
I stood there alone, the evening breeze tousling my hair while a storm surged within my heart.
The truth was finally revealed. All misunderstandings had been cleared up. Shen Zhi Zhou, that cold, tsundere, awkward guy—he didn’t dislike me; he might actually... care about me? Care enough to lose control over my blind date? Care enough to silently suffer because of my distance?
