In the campus, countless times we brushed past each other, and he seemed to look right through me, his gaze cold and indifferent, as if I were just a transparent passerby. The feeling of being completely ignored and isolated by him was more suffocating and painful than any argument or accusation.
The cheating scandal loomed over us like a heavy cloud. Although the school had not announced the final investigation results and the physics competition scores were put on hold, the label of "suspected cheater" was like an invisible brand burned into our skin. I could feel the strange looks and deliberate distancing from those around me.
I had tried. I mustered the courage to approach him, wanting to lay everything out and clearly explain my thoughts, my fears, my foolishness. But he either avoided me entirely or met me with a gaze so icy it could freeze, coupled with curt, dismissive words that pushed me away. Messages sent to him were always read but never replied to. My calls went unanswered.
I felt trapped in a cold, airtight box filled with unprecedented helplessness, grievance, and… despair. Losing someone's trust was such a painful experience. Being misunderstood by someone I liked felt so suffocating.
"Xi Xi, you can't go on like this! Look at how haggard you've become!" Su Xiao looked at my declining spirit, both angry and heartbroken. "That Jiang Chi is really something! How can he be so rash? Not even giving you a chance to explain! I thought he…"
"Maybe… he never cared that much," I forced out a smile that was uglier than crying, my heart aching as if it were being sliced by a knife. "I messed up whatever little possibility we had… maybe."
"That's nonsense!" Su Xiao stomped her foot in frustration. "What do you mean you messed up? It’s clearly that Meng Yao, that scheming woman, who is behind all this! We can't let this go! We must find evidence to expose her true colors! Not only to prove your innocence but also to show Jiang Chi who he really misunderstood!"
Su Xiao's words struck like lightning, cutting through my chaotic thoughts. Yes! I couldn't just give up! I couldn't be wronged like this! Even if… even if Jiang Chi had completely given up on me, I still had to prove my innocence! I wanted everyone to know the truth! I wanted Meng Yao to pay for her actions!
A surge of unwillingness and anger fueled me to stand up again. Su Xiao and I began our mission. We split up to find classmates who might have witnessed Meng Yao taking photos or overheard her talking to someone, hoping to find witnesses. We even managed to copy several key moments from the corridor surveillance footage outside the exam room, carefully reviewing frame by frame in hopes of uncovering any clues.
But the process was exceptionally difficult. Few were willing to step forward; after all, Meng Yao's family had some influence locally, and no one wanted to offend her easily. The surveillance footage also lacked direct evidence due to angle and clarity issues.
Several times, I nearly gave up. Perhaps this was fate. Perhaps between Jiang Chi and me, it was destined to be a misunderstanding.
Just when I was feeling disheartened and almost ready to accept this "fate," an unexpected person appeared like a glimmer of light in my dark world—Senior Su Yang.
That evening, I was lost in thought in the school’s small garden when Senior Su Yang approached me.
"Lin Xi, how have you been lately?" He hesitated for a moment before sitting down on the bench beside me, his tone gentle and filled with concern.
"I'm okay, thank you for your care," I forced a smile.
