“Jiang Chi…” I finally caught my breath and called his name, my voice trembling slightly from excitement and running. “I… I…”
There were so many things I wanted to say—apologies, gratitude, questions, explanations… Countless emotions and words surged and crowded in my chest, but ultimately they all got stuck in my throat, unable to escape.
“I’m sorry.”
It was Shi Po Tian Jing who broke the silence first, uttering those three words.
I was completely taken aback, staring at him in disbelief. “You… you’re apologizing?” I should be the one apologizing!
He seemed a bit uncomfortable, his gaze drifting toward the distant skyline. The sharp lines of his profile appeared softer under the setting sun, even his ears tinged with a suspicious blush. “Before… I was too impulsive,” he said, his voice lower than usual, carrying a hint of barely noticeable regret. “I shouldn’t have said those hurtful things to you.” After a pause, he added, “I was just… too angry.”
“You were angry that I didn’t believe you, right?” I voiced his thoughts for him, feeling a mix of bitterness and sorrow.
He fell silent for a few seconds, as if conceding. Then he turned back to me, locking his gaze onto my face with an intensity that was almost startling, as if he wanted to draw me in completely. “Lin Xi,” he called my name with utmost seriousness. “I’m not angry with you anymore.”
Then he took a deep breath, as if making a certain decision, and stepped forward with long strides, confidently approaching me.
My heart raced faster with each step he took closer, nearly bursting from my chest. I held my breath in nervousness, my palms sweating as I watched his handsome face grow larger before me.
He stopped just a step away from me, slightly lowering his eyelids while gazing intensely into my eyes. The sunlight danced on his thick eyelashes; those eyes that usually held an air of detachment now seemed filled with the gentle starlight of the entire dusk and something else… a burning emotion that made my heart stop.
“Lin Xi,” he repeated my name softly, his voice deep and magnetic, like a feather brushing against my ear. “I’m not angry anymore.”
He paused for a moment; I could see his Adam’s apple bobbing up and down as a flicker of struggle crossed his eyes but was ultimately replaced by a stronger force. He looked directly into my eyes and spoke with an unprecedented clarity and seriousness that struck deep into my soul:
“I like you.”
Boom—!!!
My mind went blank instantly as if it had been hit by a supernova, leaving me dizzy and breathless. The sounds of the wind around us, the distant honking of cars, the rays of the setting sun—all seemed to vanish in that moment. In my world, there was only his words and the blazing starry sea reflected in his eyes.
He… said… he likes me?!
Jiang Chi! That aloof figure who kept people at arm's length and spoke little; the one whose gaze could freeze anyone—Jiang Chi—had just told me… he likes me?! This couldn’t be real!
“Since… when did this start? I can’t really say.” He observed my stunned expression and slowly formed an extremely rare smile—faint yet gentle enough to drown someone. There was even a hint of… embarrassment in his eyes? “Maybe… even earlier than I realized. Perhaps it was when you spilled that cup of coffee on me and hurriedly apologized?”
“Ah?” My mouth hung open stupidly as my brain remained on standby.
“Seeing you flustered and a bit silly made me think… it was quite interesting.” His gaze wandered for a moment as if recalling memories. “Later on, preparing for competitions with you made me realize how smart and serious you are; your eyes light up when solving problems—you’re so focused. Of course… sometimes you can be a bit scatterbrained like a little rabbit that’s lost its way, but that’s also… very cute.”
“When I saw Su Yang bringing you cake, I felt really annoyed—very annoyed.”
“When I saw you get hit by a basketball and bleed, I was worried and angry—angry at that careless jerk and angry at myself for not keeping an eye on you.”
"I know Meng Yao is trying to trip you up from behind, and I really want to just... deal with her," he paused, seemingly searching for the right words, "but I'm afraid it might scare you, make you think I'm too... violent."
"So when you chose to hide the truth to 'protect' me, that's why I got so angry. Angry that you don't rely on me, angry that you treat me like an outsider, angry that between us... we could clearly be closer, yet these petty matters keep us apart."
He spoke all of this in one breath, so much that I began to doubt whether the person before me was truly himself. Yet every word he uttered felt like a warm chisel, carving deeply into my heart, dispelling all coldness and unease, bringing forth an unprecedented surge of warmth and excitement.
