The Top Star Walks the Runway for Me

Backstage was akin to a battlefield. The air was thick with strange odors, accompanied by the roar of hairdryers and the click of high heels on the floor. 0

I held the walkie-talkie, shouting inside to ensure my assistant kept a close eye on the last dress being ironed. 0

“Xia Wan, come quick and see your ace!” The brand’s PR director, Ke Lin, sashayed over, a tall figure following closely behind. 0

The man stood in the harsh light at the entrance, his silhouette outlined in gold, creating an unreal sense of distance. It wasn’t until he stepped closer, fully illuminated by the lights, that I recognized him—Ran. 0

Still that face capable of turning heads, but now stripped of youthful exuberance; his gaze was indifferent and distant, as if everyone around him were separated by a layer of ice. He wore a simple black T-shirt and jeans, as if he had just stepped off a high-fashion runway. 0

My hand trembled, nearly dropping the walkie-talkie to the ground. 0

“Lance! Long time no see, you’re looking more handsome than ever!” Ke Lin greeted him enthusiastically before turning to me with a radiant smile. “Xia Wan, I’ve brought Lance in to kick things off—top-tier configuration! Exciting, isn’t it?” 0

Exciting? More like shocking enough to make me want to die. 0

I forced a smile that was more painful than crying and replied hoarsely, “Ke Lin, can we get someone else?” 0

The smile on Ke Lin’s face instantly froze. “What did you say? Xia Wan, don’t joke around.” 0

“I’m not joking.” I met Ran’s cold eyes, devoid of warmth. “Get him replaced—immediately.” 0

A few assistants and models exchanged furtive glances; the air was thick with gossip. Ran remained impassive, as if we weren’t discussing him but rather the weather. 0

Ke Lin’s expression darkened. “Xia Wan, Lance was personally designated by the brand’s higher-ups; the contract has been signed ages ago, and all promotional materials have been distributed. You think we can just switch?” 0

“Then let’s terminate the contract,” I bit out those three words through clenched teeth. “I’ll take on all losses.” 0

Ke Lin looked as if he had heard something absurd. “You’ll take on losses? Do you have any idea how significant they are? You’re just starting out—can you afford it?” 0

Of course I knew. But looking at Ran’s nonchalant face ignited a fire within me. Why should it be like this? 0

Why was he able to treat me that way back then and now appear before me as if nothing happened, basking in the spotlight, while I had to look up at him from below? 0

Just as the atmosphere became tense, Ran finally broke his silence. He glanced at me with no discernible emotion. 0

"Let's proceed according to the contract," he said, his voice low and carrying a unique magnetism, yet to my ears, it felt colder than ice. 0

After speaking, he turned away without looking at anyone else and left the chaotic backstage. This left Ke Lin and me staring at each other in disbelief. 0

Ke Lin was so angry that he stomped his feet. "Xia Wan! What on earth are you doing?! Do you have any idea how much effort we put into getting Lance here?" 0

I remained silent, feeling an overwhelming chill wash over me, my fingertips trembling. An assistant handed me a bottle of water. "Sister Xia, are you okay?" 0

I took the water and gulped down a large mouthful; the icy liquid slid down my throat but did nothing to extinguish the fire burning inside me. 0

Okay? How could I be okay? 0

My entire world had been turned upside down the moment he appeared. Three years ago, before the Graduation Show began, I called him, but all I got was a cold busy signal. Where was he? Why didn’t he come? 0

All my hard work, my all-or-nothing future… 0

In the end, the show descended into chaos, nearly ending my career as a designer. And he had vanished without a trace, as if he had evaporated into thin air. 0

It wasn't until much later that I saw in a gossip magazine that he had signed with an international top modeling agency and shot to fame at Milan Fashion Week. 0

He hadn’t disappeared; he had simply gone to a higher place, leaving me far behind. 0

Now, he was back. In a posture of triumph, he returned before me. 0

I closed my eyes for a moment, and when I opened them again, my gaze had turned cold. 0

Stay calm, Xia Wan. 0

It’s just a shared stage, right? Who’s afraid of whom? 0

I picked up the walkie-talkie, my voice steady once more. 0

“Everyone, take your positions and prepare for the rehearsal!” 0

No matter how uneasy I felt inside, I had to win this show. 0

I turned around and looked at the pale face in the mirror. 0

Xia Wan, you can do this. 0

You are now the designer, Xia Wan. 0

The one with the "Burn" collection, the designer who will make all of Paris remember your name. 0

I faced the mirror and forced a hard smile. 0

He wants to see me fail? Not a chance. 0
