I know he has always thought that I was jealous of Su Nian, deliberately setting the fire to harm her.
But he doesn't know that five years ago, I was burned and disfigured while trying to save him, nearly dying in the Great Fire.
What I also didn't know was that five years later, I would be diagnosed with cancer, with little time left.
And he is unaware of all of this.
I looked at him, my eyes filled with despair and sadness.
"Gu Jing Shen, I didn't..." I wanted to explain, but my throat felt blocked, and no sound came out.
At that moment, a loud crash echoed from the Fire Scene.
Gu Jing Shen's expression changed drastically as he broke free from my grasp and rushed into the flames without hesitation.
I collapsed to the ground, my heart turned to ashes.
I had returned to the past, yet I still couldn't prevent the tragedy from unfolding.
Is this my fate?
Suddenly, my vision was filled with a blood-red hue.
I saw Gu Jing Shen emerge from the Fire Scene, carrying the unconscious Su Nian in his arms.
His entire body was blackened by smoke, a patch of his hair singed, yet his eyes shone with an unusual brightness.
He held Su Nian tightly, as if she were the most precious treasure in the world.
And I was left forgotten in the corner.
Watching them, my heart was a tumult of emotions.
I didn't know whether to feel happy or sad.
I had successfully stopped Gu Jing Shen from rushing into the Fire Scene, yet he still recklessly plunged in for Su Nian.
Once again, I was consumed by the Great Fire.
I felt my body being scorched by flames, my skin cracking inch by inch, the pain unbearable.
I smelled the scent of burning—my hair, my skin, my flesh.
I thought I would die here, just like five years ago.
But I did not.
Once more, I was enveloped by the light of the jade pendant and returned to reality.
I lay on the floor of the studio, drenched all over, unable to tell whether it was sweat or tears.
My left cheek throbbed painfully, and my stomach churned violently.
Struggling to get up, I stumbled toward the mirror.
In the reflection, my left cheek looked even more grotesque; new wounds intertwined with old scars, a horrifying sight.
At that moment, the door to the studio was flung open.
Gu Jing Shen walked in with a dark expression, holding a bloodstained design sketch in his hand.
"Lin Wantang, what is this?" He slammed the design sketch down in front of me, his voice icy and cutting.
I looked down and saw it was the wedding dress sketch I had designed for Su Nian.
It was stained with the fresh blood I had just vomited, a shocking sight.
I lifted my head to meet Gu Jing Shen's gaze, my eyes filled with exhaustion and despair.
"This is... a wedding dress designed for Su Nian," I said softly, my voice hoarse.
Gu Jing Shen sneered, "Lin Wantang, you really are something! Designing a wedding dress? I see you want to take this opportunity to harm Su Nian!"
He approached me step by step, his eyes filled with anger and disgust.
"Do you think I don't know what you're thinking? You're jealous of Su Nian; you wish she were dead!"
I looked at him and suddenly found it quite ridiculous.
I had given him everything, even sacrificing my own life.
But what about him?
He had always believed I was a ruthless and malicious woman.
"Gu Jing Shen, have you ever thought about why I was at the Fire Scene five years ago?" I looked into his eyes and asked each word deliberately.
Gu Jing Shen was taken aback, seemingly not expecting me to ask that.
He furrowed his brow, a hint of confusion flashing in his gaze.
"Wasn't it you who set the fire?"
I laughed, tears streaming down my face.
