Bai Ling wore a look of "heartfelt sorrow," saying, "Sister-in-law! How could you do such a thing! Sneaking around here… selling things! If this gets out, where will brother Jian Jun put his face? What will the military leaders think of him!"
I scoffed internally but maintained a calm exterior. "What I do seems to have nothing to do with you. But you two coming here at this hour—what do you want?"
"What do we want? Of course, we came… to see if you need any help!" Lu Jianguo rubbed his hands together, his eyes gleaming as he stared at the jars. "I heard your braised dishes are delicious; can you let your little brother have a taste?"
As he spoke, he reached out to grab a jar!
"Get lost!" I shouted sharply, my eyes flashing with coldness!
Lu Jianguo flinched at my intensity and reluctantly withdrew his hand but muttered under his breath, "Why are you so fierce? It's just some food; why hide it like you're stealing!"
"Sister-in-law, brother Jian Jun means well," Bai Ling quickly intervened to smooth things over but her tone carried an underlying threat. "However, selling things privately like this is indeed… not very good. If the military finds out, at best you'll get a reprimand; at worst… it might affect brother Jian Jun's future..."
Ah, so they think they've caught me in a bind and are starting to threaten me?
Watching them play off each other like this sparked an idea in my mind.
“Is that so?” I feigned panic, my eyes darting away. “I… I just saw that my family was struggling and wanted to earn some money to help out… I didn’t think too much about it…”
“Sister-in-law, I know you mean well,” Bai Ling immediately replied with a tone of understanding. “How about this? To avoid putting brother Jian Jun in a difficult position, and for the sake of your reputation, let’s take care of this business from now on.”
