"What did you say?"
Li Xunwan's heart raced; it was so embarrassing that Zheng Kaiwen hadn’t heard her clearly. Just moments ago, he had mentioned that he felt different too. Could it be that he liked her as well?
In the following days of rehearsals, Li Xunwan felt as if she were dreaming. Zheng Kaiwen's gaze often lingered on her, subtle yet unmistakable. His smile had become gentler than before. The atmosphere between them was thick with unspoken tension, like a delicate veil.
After one rehearsal, Li Xunwan was alone, organizing the props. Zheng Kaiwen approached her and said, "Let me help you."
Li Xunwan looked up and met his gaze. It felt as if there were stars shimmering in his eyes.
"Thank you," she replied softly, her cheeks flushing slightly.
As they worked together to tidy up the props, they stood close enough for Li Xunwan to feel the warmth radiating from him. She was so nervous that her palms began to sweat.
Suddenly, Liu Sitian appeared, a mischievous smile on her face. "Oh dear, am I interrupting something?"
Li Xunwan's face turned even redder as she quickly explained, "No, we’re just organizing the props."
"Is that so?" Liu Sitian raised an eyebrow, her gaze playfully darting between the two of them.
Zheng Kaiwen cleared his throat. "Sitian, don’t tease Xunwan."
"Alright, alright, I won’t say anything more," Liu Sitian laughed as she walked away, casting a meaningful glance back at Li Xunwan before leaving.
Li Xunwan's heart raced even faster. She felt like a little deer being watched by a hunter—both anxious and exhilarated.
Zheng Kaiwen handed her a bottle of water. "Drink some water."
"Thank you," Li Xunwan replied, taking the bottle and sipping slowly.
"Li Xunwan," Zheng Kaiwen suddenly said, "you seem to have lost weight recently."
Li Xunwan paused for a moment. "Really?"
She looked down at herself, not feeling any thinner.
"Yeah," Zheng Kaiwen's gaze fell on her slender waist. "It seems like your waist has gotten smaller too."
Li Xunwan's cheeks instantly flushed like fire, and she quickly changed the subject. "Let's continue with the rehearsal."
Zheng Kaiwen smiled. "Alright."
During the following rehearsal, Zheng Kaiwen was even more considerate towards Li Xunwan. He would proactively help her with props and gently guide her while she practiced her lines.
Li Xunwan felt very happy. She felt as if she were a precious treasure cradled in someone's hands.
However, this sweetness did not last long. One afternoon, while Li Xunwan was practicing her lines in the rehearsal room, Zheng Kaiwen gently handed her a cup of water. "You've worked hard; drink some water."
Li Xunwan accepted the cup and thanked him softly.
Zheng Kaiwen gazed at her, his eyes warm and gentle. "You look beautiful when you recite your lines, especially your voice; it’s like a heavenly melody."
Li Xunwan's cheeks flushed with a rosy hue, her heart racing as she lightly bit her lower lip, her eyes flickering.
Just then, the door to the rehearsal room was suddenly pushed open.
Qin Shaoze stormed in with an angry expression.
He walked straight up to Li Xunwan and snatched the water cup from her hand. "Are you trying to seduce men again?"
Li Xunwan was taken aback, her eyes filled with shock and grievance.
Zheng Kaiwen stepped in front of Li Xunwan, his gaze cold as he looked at Qin Shaoze. "Please show some respect."
"Respect?" Qin Shaoze sneered, "What qualifications do you have to demand my respect? You're just a pretty boy who climbed to power on a woman's coattails!"
Zheng Kaiwen clenched his fists, a flicker of anger flashing in his eyes. "You..."
Li Xunwan gently pulled on Zheng Kaiwen's arm, shaking her head slightly. "Let it go, Zheng Kaiwen. Don't stoop to his level."
Zheng Kaiwen took a deep breath, striving to suppress the fury boiling within him.
Seeing the closeness between the two, Qin Shaoze's jealousy flared up. "Li Xunwan, have you forgotten who I am? You were once my woman!"
Li Xunwan's face turned pale in an instant, her body trembling slightly.
Zheng Kaiwen stepped protectively in front of Li Xunwan, his tone firm. "Qin Shaoze, I warn you, don't bother Li Xunwan anymore!"
Qin Shaoze's expression darkened further as he glared fiercely at Zheng Kaiwen. "Who do you think you are? What gives you the right to meddle in my affairs?"
"Just the fact that I'm Li Xunwan's friend!"
Qin Shaoze suddenly laughed, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Friend? I see you’re just trying to take advantage of the situation!"
He stepped closer to Zheng Kaiwen. "Let me tell you, Li Xunwan is my woman; you'd better stay away from her!"
Zheng Kaiwen met Qin Shaoze's gaze without fear. "Li Xunwan has broken up with you; she is free now and has the right to choose whoever she likes!"
Qin Shaoze's fists cracked ominously as a murderous glint filled his eyes. He swung his fist violently towards Zheng Kaiwen.
