Zheng Kaiwen stood at the edge of the playground, his phone pressed tightly to his ear. "Mom, I understand what you're saying, but..." His voice was filled with struggle and hesitation.
"Kevin, I'm only looking out for you," his mother's stern voice came through the phone. "That Li Xunwan is simply not worthy of you. Look at her—she's just a small-time actress in a drama club. What future does she have?"
Zheng Kaiwen clenched his fists, a storm of conflicting emotions swirling within him. He recalled Li Xunwan shining on stage, her pure passion and talent undeniable. Yet, that photograph felt like a thorn, deeply embedded in his heart.
"I... I need time to think," Zheng Kaiwen finally said, fatigue lacing his voice.
After hanging up, he wandered aimlessly around the playground. The setting sun cast a warm glow on his broad shoulders, creating a long shadow behind him. Memories of his time with Li Xunwan flooded back—laughter, gentle touches, and her cheeks flushing shyly.
"Have I been too hard on her?" The thought suddenly pierced through his mind, causing Zheng Kaiwen to stop in his tracks. He pulled out his phone, hesitating for a long moment before finally dialing Li Xunwan's number.
At that moment, Li Xunwan was curled up on her dorm bed, silent tears streaming down her face. She felt an overwhelming sense of loneliness and despair. Suddenly, the ringing of her phone shattered the silence. Seeing the caller ID made her heart nearly stop.
With trembling fingers gliding over the screen, Li Xunwan took a deep breath. "Hello... Kevin?"
There was silence on the other end for a few seconds, only their breaths filling the void. Zheng Kaiwen opened his mouth but struggled to find the right words. He had so much to say but didn't know where to begin.
Just then, Liu Sitian's call interrupted them. Li Xunwan glanced at the flashing caller notification, torn by inner turmoil. She didn't want to miss this chance to communicate with Zheng Kaiwen but was also concerned that Liu Sitian might have something urgent.
"Kevin, I..." Li Xunwan hesitated to speak but was cut off by Zheng Kaiwen.
"It's okay, you can take it," Zheng Kaiwen's voice carried a hint of disappointment. "We... can talk another day."
Before Li Xunwan could respond, the call was abruptly disconnected. She stared blankly at her phone screen, a mix of emotions swirling within her. Just then, Liu Sitian's call came through again.
Li Xunwan took a deep breath and answered the phone. "Sitian..." Her voice trembled with unshed tears.
"Xun Wan! Are you okay?" Liu Sitian's anxious voice came through, "I just discovered something about that photo..."
Li Xunwan straightened up suddenly, her heart racing. "What? What photo are you talking about?"
"The one that caused the misunderstanding between you and Kevin!" Liu Sitian's voice was filled with excitement, "I think there's something wrong here. Listen to me..."
Just as Liu Sitian was about to reveal the truth, Li Xunwan's phone suddenly died. Panic surged through her as she pressed the power button, but it remained unresponsive.
Meanwhile, Zheng Kaiwen stood on the playground, gazing at the darkening sky, his heart filled with conflict and unease. He had no idea how his choice at that moment would impact his future with Li Xunwan.
The truth was right in front of them yet felt so far away. Both Li Xunwan and Zheng Kaiwen stood at a crossroads in their lives, facing a painful decision.
