Gu Han seemed to have changed into a different person lately, always appearing on my usual route.
At first, I thought it was just a coincidence, but after several consecutive days, I finally sensed something was off. This guy was doing it on purpose.
"Hey, what a coincidence!" One morning, Gu Han stood at the entrance of the office building with a smile, holding a cup of coffee.
I glanced at him and gave a faint "hm," preparing to walk past him into the elevator.
"Wait!" He grabbed my arm, "This cup of coffee is for you. Give it a try?"
I frowned and calmly pulled away from his grip. "No thanks, I've already had some."
The smile on Gu Han's face faltered for a moment but quickly returned to normal. "Well... then let's take the elevator together?"
I remained silent and walked straight into the elevator. Gu Han followed closely behind and even pressed the button for my floor.
Inside the elevator, he casually asked, "By the way, I’ve noticed you’ve been getting pretty close to President Lu lately?"
I raised an eyebrow. "What’s it to you? Do you have an opinion?"
"N-no." Gu Han chuckled awkwardly. "I was just curious. You two... you’re not...?"
"What about us?" I turned to meet his gaze directly.
Gu Han felt a bit uneasy under my stare and stammered, "I mean... you two aren’t dating, are you?"
I let out a cold laugh. "Gu Han, my personal matters are none of your business."
"I... I'm just concerned about you." There was a hint of bitterness in Gu Han's tone. "Someone like President Lu isn’t someone you can handle."
The elevator chimed and came to a stop. I stepped out briskly, throwing back a parting remark without looking: "Same to you."
Behind me, Gu Han's hurried footsteps echoed. "Wait, that's not what I meant..."
I ignored him and walked straight to my office.
In the days that followed, Gu Han increasingly appeared in my line of sight. During lunch, on my way home from work, even while shopping on weekends, I would spot him "coincidentally" around.
Finally, one day, I could no longer hold back. "Gu Han, what do you want?"
He paused for a moment, then revealed a bitter smile. "I... I just want to talk to you more."
"Why?"
"Because..." Gu Han took a deep breath. "Because I regret it."
I looked at him coldly. "Regret what?"
"Regret not cherishing you back then." A flicker of remorse passed through Gu Han's eyes. "I've only just realized how wonderful you are."
I scoffed. "Only just now? Isn't that a bit too late?"
Gu Han lowered his head. "I know... But I can't help but wonder, if I had chosen you back then, would things be different now?"
"Gu Han," I met his gaze directly. "Let the past be the past. You made your choices, and I have my own life."
He shook his head with a bitter smile. "But... but I see you becoming more and more outstanding every day, shining brighter and brighter. And Liu Rumeng..."
"What’s wrong with Liu Rumeng?" I raised an eyebrow and asked.
Gu Han sighed, "She... she seems to be getting more and more mediocre. I’ve realized that between us, aside from that pitiful tenderness, there’s nothing else."
I scoffed, "So what? Do you think I would be moved to throw myself at you because of what you just said?"
"No... no," Gu Han hurriedly explained, "I just... I just wanted to tell you that I was wrong."
I shook my head. "Gu Han, you don’t understand at all. The way I am now isn’t for you, nor is it to prove anything to anyone. I’ve become better simply because I want to be better for myself."
Gu Han was taken aback, and after a long pause, he murmured, "So... so that’s how it is."
I turned to leave but heard a soft "I’m sorry" behind me.
I stopped in my tracks without looking back. "Why are you apologizing?"
"For everything in the past," Gu Han’s voice was filled with deep regret. "Can I ask you to forgive me? Maybe... maybe we can start over?"
I turned around and looked into his hopeful eyes, feeling a twinge of pity in my heart.
"Gu Han," I said softly, "I’ve already forgiven you long ago. But starting over? I’m afraid that’s not possible."
His face instantly turned pale. "W-why not?"
"Because I already have someone I love," I smiled gently, "and I’m very happy."
Gu Han stood frozen in place as if struck by lightning.
I took a deep breath and continued, "Gu Han, I hope you understand. Life is not a game, and feelings are not something to be taken lightly. You chose Liu Rumeng back then, and now you need to take responsibility for her. Don’t let a moment of impulse negate your past choices."
Gu Han lowered his head, his voice choked with emotion. "But... but I really regret it."
"Regret won’t help," I said firmly. "What’s done is done; what matters now is how you face the present and plan for the future."
After a long silence, Gu Han finally looked up. "You’re right... I’ve been too selfish."
I nodded. "Treasure the people around you. Perhaps Liu Rumeng isn’t as ordinary as you think; maybe you’ve just overlooked her shining qualities."
Gu Han forced a smile. "But I can’t help but compare her to you..."
"That’s your problem, not hers," I replied candidly. "Everyone is a unique individual, and there’s no basis for comparison. Instead of resenting her for not being like me, put more effort into discovering her strengths."
Gu Han nodded thoughtfully. "I... I will try."
I turned to leave, this time not looking back. Behind me, Gu Han's low voice called out, "Thank you... I wish you happiness."
A slight smile crept onto my lips as I walked away with light steps. The sun was shining just right, the breeze gentle; my life was heading in the best direction.
Meanwhile, Liu Rumeng sat at home, feeling uneasy.
Recently, Gu Han's attitude had made her anxious. He often brought me up in conversation and frequently compared her to me.
"Look at her; she’s so capable at work and knows how to dress well."
"Why have you become so lazy lately? Weren't you ambitious before?"
Every word felt like a knife stabbing at Liu Rumeng's heart. She began to feel anxious and started to doubt herself. Could it be... could Gu Han have regrets?
She picked up her phone, hesitated for a moment, and finally dialed Gu Han's number.
"Hello, Rumeng?" Gu Han's voice came through the line.
"Han, do you... do you have something on your mind lately?" Liu Rumeng asked cautiously.
There was a moment of silence on the other end. "Rumeng, let's talk."
Liu Rumeng's heart sank. "Okay... okay."
Half an hour later, Gu Han pushed open the door to his home. Liu Rumeng sat on the sofa, anxiously watching him.
Gu Han sat down across from her and took a deep breath. "Rumeng, I'm sorry."
Liu Rumeng's heart dropped to the bottom. "Are you... are you saying you don't want me anymore?"
Gu Han paused for a moment before shaking his head. "No, that's not it. I want to apologize for my recent behavior."
He took Liu Rumeng's hand in his. "I admit I've been a bit shaken lately. But today I realized that our relationship shouldn't be affected by anyone else."
Tears welled up in Liu Rumeng's eyes. "Really?"
Gu Han nodded. "There may be many shortcomings between us, but those are things we need to face together. I shouldn't compare you to others, nor should I overlook your efforts."
He looked at Liu Rumeng with deep affection. "From now on, I will cherish you more, and I hope we can improve together and become better people."
Liu Rumeng broke into a smile and tightly embraced Gu Han. "I will work hard too!"
Outside the window, the setting sun cast a warm golden glow over the couple, reaffirming their commitment to each other.
On the other side of the city, I nestled in Lu Jingshen's arms, savoring this rare moment of tranquility.
"What are you thinking about?" Lu Jingshen asked softly.
I shook my head. "Nothing, just feeling very happy."
He leaned down and kissed the top of my head. "So am I."
I tilted my head back to meet his gaze. "Jing Shen, thank you for helping me become a better version of myself."
Lu Jingshen playfully tapped my nose. "Silly, it's all your own doing. I'm just here cheering you on."
I smiled and nuzzled against him. "Then let's continue to get better together, shall we?"
"Yes," he said gently. "Together, we will walk towards a brighter future."
Outside, the stars began to twinkle in the night sky. I knew that no matter what lay ahead, as long as he was by my side, I had nothing to fear.
Because this time, I chose the best version of him.
