I couldn't believe that Gu Heng actually liked me.
This sudden affection wrapped around my heart like the rampant vines of spring, suffocating yet tinged with an inexplicable sweetness.
In the following days, I noticed a change in Gu Heng's demeanor.
At times, he was gentle and considerate, his warmth illuminating me like the sun on a spring day.
Other times, he was cold and distant, pushing me away as if encased in the ice of winter, freezing my enthusiasm.
His unpredictable moods left me bewildered, my heart racing with anxiety and uncertainty.
This erratic behavior only deepened my curiosity about him.
What troubled me more was his frequent appearances near my residence.
Outside the intricately carved window, I could often catch a glimpse of his fleeting figure.
In the garden pavilion, there seemed to linger a faint scent of sandalwood that belonged to him.
Sometimes, I could even feel his gaze—intense and burning—like flames scorching my skin.
It sent shivers down my spine, yet I couldn't help but want to draw closer.
Ruan Lang also began to act strangely; he frequently appeared by my sister's side, showering her with warmth and concern.
The way he looked at her was so tender it seemed he could drown in it, as if she were the only person in the world.
I sensed that something was quietly unfolding around me, yet I felt lost in a fog, unable to see the way forward.
This feeling was like the oppressive calm before a storm, stifling and hard to bear.
The kiss mark left by Gu Heng lingered on my neck, refusing to fade away.
That patch of crimson resembled blooming plum blossoms, vibrant and dripping with allure, yet it constantly reminded me of that ambiguous night.
I had no choice but to wear a scarf to cover it, fearing discovery would lead to unnecessary gossip.
Unfortunately, my sister was perceptive and immediately noticed something was off with me.
During a banquet, amidst the clinking of glasses and bursts of laughter, she teased me in front of everyone, "A Wan, you’re wearing that scarf so tightly. Could it be that you’ve been secretly meeting your lover?"
Her playful jibe made my face flush with embarrassment; I wished I could find a hole to hide in.
I felt all eyes on me, like searchlights illuminating my every move, leaving me nowhere to escape.
Ruan Lang chimed in, "Yes, A Wan, lovebirds should not keep secrets from us."
His tone carried a hint of teasing but seemed to conceal deeper meaning.
Gu Heng sat nearby, laughing knowingly.
His laughter was deep and magnetic, like a captivating melody tinged with a hint of danger.
Suddenly, he leaned closer to me, the scent of sandalwood enveloping me as he whispered, "Did you tell your sister that I’m your beloved?"
His voice held a mix of aggression and probing that sent my heart racing even more.
His breath brushed against my ear, warm and tantalizing, making my heartbeat quicken to the point where I could hardly breathe.
"No," I hurriedly explained, "I just accidentally hurt myself."
My explanation was weak and unconvincing, even to myself.
My voice was as faint as a whisper, barely audible amidst the clamor of the banquet.
"Oh?" Gu Heng raised an eyebrow, "Is that so?"
His gaze was sharp, as if he could see through all my pretenses.
I dared not look at him any longer; I lowered my head and silently sipped my tea.
The bitter brew could not mask the turmoil and unease within me.
When Ruan Lang returned, he inquired about my conversation with Gu Heng.
I brushed him off, saying, "Nothing much, just a bit of small talk."
My eyes flickered, avoiding his gaze for fear he would see through my guilt.
However, Gu Heng publicly exposed my lie.
“She said I am her ideal partner, deeply affectionate,” he declared.
There was a hint of provocation and smugness in his tone that left me utterly embarrassed.
I shot him a fierce glare but dared not retort.
My cheeks burned like they were on fire; I wished I could find a crack in the ground to hide in.
A few days later, the four of us went boating on the lake.
The sun shone brightly, a gentle breeze caressed my face, and the lake shimmered with sparkling reflections, a sight to behold.
Ruan Lang suddenly gave me a meaningful smile and then took the initiative to stay close to my sister.
He and my sister chatted and laughed, their gestures intimate, as if they were a perfect couple.
I felt puzzled in my heart, unable to understand his intentions.
On the way back, the sun set in the west, painting half the sky with evening glow.
Gu Heng was alone with me.
He suddenly confessed, "I have informed Ruan Lang that you and I share mutual feelings. This mark is left by me."
His words struck me like a bolt from the blue, leaving me utterly shocked.
I couldn't believe that Gu Heng had truly revealed my secret to others.
I stared at him blankly, momentarily at a loss for words.
"Why... why did you do this?" I asked with a trembling voice.
