Gu Heng took out a letter and handed it to me.
"Take a look," he said, his tone calm yet carrying an almost imperceptible weight, like a boulder pressing down on my heart, making it hard for me to breathe.
I took the letter with confusion, my slender fingers gently tracing the familiar handwriting on the envelope, a wave of unease rising within me.
As I unfolded it, the contents made me feel an overwhelming sense of shame, as if a bucket of cold water had been dumped over my head, chilling me to the bone.
The letter was written by my sister to Gu Heng.
It boldly mentioned phrases like "scar on the neck" and "mutual affection," each word striking like a sharp knife, piercing my eyes and my heart.
My secret had been discovered by my sister!
The thought exploded in my mind like thunder, leaving me dizzy and disoriented.
I looked up at Gu Heng, only to find him gazing back at me, his eyes complex and deep, like an ancient well that concealed his true thoughts.
I felt utterly humiliated and furious, wishing I could find a crack in the ground to hide in and never come out again.

I turned around and was surprised to see my sister and Ruan Lang standing together.
They stood side by side, gazing at me with meaningful looks, their lips curling into a barely perceptible smile. To me, that smile felt glaringly bright, almost mocking.
My face instantly flushed, blood rushing to my cheeks as if it would burst through my skin.
I opened my mouth to explain, but found myself unable to say anything. My throat felt constricted, rendering me voiceless.
The air seemed to freeze, surrounding us in silence. Only the gentle breeze brushed over the lake's surface, creating ripples that mirrored my turbulent emotions—undulating and restless.
Gu Heng broke the silence, his gaze fixed on me with a tenderness that seemed capable of melting me away.
"Years of affection have been my fault," he said softly, his voice deep and magnetic, carrying a subtle tremor.
His words were like a stone thrown into the calm waters of my heart, sending ripples cascading through me. My heart began to race violently, as if it were trying to leap out of my chest.
Gu Heng continued, "I shouldn't have hidden this from you, allowing you to bear such a heavy burden." His tone was filled with regret and self-reproach, making me feel even guiltier and more pained for him.
Why did he have to endure so much?
Why did he take all the responsibility upon himself?
"A Wan," Gu Heng called my name gently, his voice like music echoing in my ears. "Can we be united as one?"
His voice was deep and magnetic, carrying a subtle tremor as if he had exhausted all his strength just to utter those words.
Sunlight poured over Gu Heng, making him appear gentle and affectionate, as if all the beauty in the world had concentrated upon him.
For a moment, I felt dazed, as if I had returned to those carefree years long ago.
Back then, we were innocent and inseparable childhood friends, sharing everything without any barriers or secrets. We played together, studied together, and shared each other's joys and sorrows.
I envisioned a beautiful scene of harmony with Gu Heng, my heart filled with longing and yearning. I hoped to grow old with him, never to be apart.
"I..." I opened my mouth but didn't know what to say. My heart was filled with contradictions and struggles. I didn't know how to face my sister, how to face Ruan Lang, or how to navigate this complicated relationship.
"A Wan, will you marry me?" Gu Heng asked again, his eyes brimming with hope and desire.
