That morning, I stood in the bathroom, staring at the pregnancy test in my hand, my heart pounding like a drum. Two clear red lines were visible, as if announcing the arrival of a new life. I felt both excited and anxious, unsure of what to do next.
I gently caressed my still-flat belly, countless images flashing through my mind. In the days to come, this place would nurture a new life, a child belonging to me and Shen Yi. This realization filled me with both sweetness and fear.
"Lin Wei, are you okay?" Shen Yi's voice came from outside the door, filled with concern. "You've been in there for quite a while."
I took a deep breath, hid the pregnancy test in my pocket, and opened the door. Shen Yi stood at the threshold, his brow furrowed and worry etched in his eyes. I forced a smile and said, "I'm fine; I might just be a bit dizzy from not resting well last night."
Shen Yi looked at me skeptically and reached out to touch my forehead. "You don't have a fever. Should we go to the hospital?"
I shook my head, but inside I was torn. How should I tell him this news? Would he be happy? We had only just gotten married; was it too soon? And what about my mother? What would she think?
In the following days, I felt like a thief burdened with secrets, always hiding away. I knew I couldn't keep it from him for long, but I just didn't know how to start. Every time Shen Yi asked me what was wrong with genuine concern, I could only stammer and evade.
Finally, one weekend evening, I gathered my courage to tell Shen Yi. We had just finished dinner and were sitting on the sofa watching television. I took a deep breath and softly called out, "Shen Yi."
"Mm?" He turned to me with gentle eyes.
I bit my lip, my heart racing. "I... I have something to tell you."
"What is it?" He sensed my tension and took my hand.
I closed my eyes and mustered all my courage to say, "I'm pregnant."
Suddenly, the sofa shook violently as I opened my eyes to see Shen Yi standing up abruptly, disbelief written all over his face. "Really?" His voice trembled slightly. "Lin Wei, are you serious?"
I nodded, looking at him nervously. "Are you... happy?"
"Happy?" Shen Yi suddenly burst into laughter, picking me up and spinning me around. "I’m absolutely thrilled! Lin Wei, I’m going to be a dad!"
His joy was so genuine that it instantly dispelled the unease in my heart. Leaning against him, tears began to flow down my cheeks without me realizing it. Shen Yi gently wiped away my tears and said softly, "Silly, why are you crying? From today on, you’re the great contributor to our family."
In that moment, I felt an unprecedented sense of happiness and security. Shen Yi's excitement and anticipation infected me, and I began to dream about our future life together.
The next day, we went to the hospital for a check-up to confirm the pregnancy. Looking at that tiny life on the B Ultrasound, both Shen Yi and I were so excited that we couldn't find the words.
On the way home, Shen Yi enthusiastically planned, "We need to prepare the nursery, buy a stroller, bottles, diapers... Oh right, I need to learn how to take care of pregnant women and newborns."
His enthusiasm made me laugh. "Take it slow; it’s still early."
"It’s not early!" Shen Yi said seriously. "We want to give our baby the best."
In the days that followed, Shen Yi’s thoughtfulness moved me deeply. He became even more attentive than before, always quietly taking care of all my needs. Every morning, he would prepare a nutritious breakfast for me; when he came home in the evening, he would take on household chores so that I wouldn’t be too tired.
During the early stages of my pregnancy, I often felt nauseous and fatigued. Sometimes I would suddenly feel like throwing up in the middle of the night, and Shen Yi would always wake up immediately, gently patting my back and handing me warm water. Those difficult nights became much more bearable with his company.
As my pregnancy progressed, my emotions became increasingly unstable. Sometimes I would lose my temper over trivial matters; other times I would cry for no reason at all. Shen Yi was always patient in comforting me without ever complaining. Once, I snapped at him because he bought the wrong flavor of ice cream, and afterward I felt regretful. But Shen Yi just smiled and said, "It’s okay; it was my fault. Next time I'll remember you like strawberry flavor."
When my mother heard the news, she was overjoyed. She began visiting us frequently, bringing various supplements and baby supplies. Sometimes I felt she was being overly enthusiastic, but seeing the anticipation and love in her eyes made it hard for me to say anything against it.
The relationship between Shen Yi and his mother became even more harmonious because of this child. One day, I saw them huddled together, studying a parenting book, and I couldn't help but feel a wave of warmth.
When I was six months pregnant, we went for a detailed prenatal check-up. The doctor told us that the baby was very healthy and that it was a boy. The moment we stepped out of the hospital, Shen Yi excitedly hugged me and whispered in my ear, "Thank you, Lin Wei. Thank you for giving me such a wonderful surprise."
That night, we lay in bed discussing what to name our baby.
"How about calling him Shen Xiaobao?" I joked.
Shen Yi laughed and shook his head. "That's too casual. We need to think carefully and give him a meaningful name."
We exchanged ideas for quite a while before finally deciding on the name Shen Chenxi. We hoped he would bring light and hope to the world like the rising sun.
As the due date approached, we began preparing the nursery. Shen Yi personally painted the walls, assembled the crib, and even drew cute cartoon patterns on the walls. Watching him busy with all these tasks filled my heart with emotion.
Sometimes, I felt that everything was happening too quickly—marriage, pregnancy, and soon becoming parents—all in the blink of an eye. But whenever I felt anxious, Shen Yi would always give me strength. He would gently hold me and say in my ear, "Don't be afraid; we'll face it together."
Pregnancy wasn't easy; there were laughs and tears. But with Shen Yi by my side, I felt that everything was worth it. Every time I felt the baby move inside me, I would imagine what he would look like when he was born. Would he be as handsome as Shen Yi? Would he have my eyes?
I knew we were about to welcome a new life and embark on a new chapter in our lives. Although the future was filled with uncertainties and challenges, I believed that as long as we stood together, we could overcome any difficulties.
Watching Shen Yi's busy figure, I gently stroked my rounded belly, filled with anticipation and happiness. This new life was the fruit of our love and also a new starting point in our lives. No matter what the future held, we would face it bravely together and write our own happy chapter.
