03:00 AM.
The dormitory was enveloped in silence, with only the low hum of the air conditioner breaking the stillness.
I turned over, groggily wishing to continue my sleep.
Suddenly, a faint sound of a touchscreen being tapped broke through the quiet.
It wasn’t mine; my phone was charging beside my pillow.
I squinted, using the dim light filtering in from the window to glance at the bed across from me.
Lin Bing was asleep, but her eyes seemed only partially closed, leaving a narrow slit.
Her hand was holding her phone, fingers swiftly gliding across the screen.
What the hell? Sleepwalking and using her phone? That’s a new one.
Just then, she began to mumble softly, her voice unusually clear in the stillness of the night.
“I found it… her traces… they’re all hidden here…”
I jolted awake in an instant.
Her traces? Whose traces?
Before I could ponder further, my phone suddenly lit up, a notification popping up on the screen:
“New device detected attempting to access your Cloud Storage. Access has been blocked.”
Damn!
I shot up in bed.
“Who?!”
The loud shout woke up the other two roommates as well.
Chen Yu, who was on the upper bunk, poked her head out and asked, "What's wrong, Weiwei? Did you see a ghost in the middle of the night?"
Du Ran, who was on the lower bunk, reacted the fastest. She jumped out of bed and dashed to Lin Bing's side, snatching her phone away.
"Lin Bing! What are you doing?"
The bright flashlight shone on Lin Bing's face, causing her to wake up suddenly, looking completely dazed.
"Huh? What’s going on? Is it morning already?"
She glanced at the phone in Du Ran's hand and then at the three of us who looked like we were facing a crisis, becoming even more confused.
"My phone... how did it end up with you?"
Du Ran shoved the phone in front of her, displaying the screen that was stuck on a failed attempt to access my Cloud Storage.
"What do you have to say for yourself? Why are you sneaking around trying to access Weiwei's Cloud Storage in the middle of the night?"
Lin Bing stared at the screen, her face turning pale.
"I... I don’t know! I was dreaming just now!"
Chen Yu climbed down as well. "What kind of dream makes you get up in the middle of the night to invade someone else's Cloud Storage?"
Lin Bing stammered, "I... I dreamed I was in a huge Digital Archive filled with my digital traces. I wanted to delete them all and completely erase my past..."
Digital Archive? Erasing the past? That dream sounded way too cyberpunk.
Du Ran let out a cold laugh and began quickly operating Lin Bing's phone.
In no time, she illuminated the screen for us to see.
"Dreaming about deleting? I think you want to delete things in reality! Let’s see what kind of stuff you have on your phone!"
On the screen were several suspicious app icons, with names like "Data Stalker," "Trace Eraser," and "Deep Web Entrance."
"Goodness, are we filming 'The Matrix' here?"
Lin Bing looked at the apps with a shifty gaze. "I... I was just curious and wanted to download it to take a look..."
I felt my forehead throb with anger.
Curious? Curious enough to sneak into my Cloud Storage in the middle of the night?
I took a deep breath.
"Find the dorm supervisor. I want to change rooms."
The dorm supervisor turned pale after hearing our account.
In the middle of the night, she didn't hesitate and reported it directly to the school's Network Security Office.
Early the next morning, a teacher wearing a windbreaker and black-rimmed glasses, looking very much like a tech geek, came to our dorm.
He introduced himself as Mr. Li from the Network Security Office.
Mr. Li first examined Lin Bing's phone, his brows furrowing so tightly that he could crush a fly.
