"Hello? Weiwei? Is something wrong calling this late?" My mother's voice came through the receiver.
Then, I heard my own voice, almost identical to mine but with a stiff and cold tone, saying into the phone, "Mom, I need money. Send me fifty thousand."
What the hell!
"Weiwei, what's wrong? Your voice sounds strange..."
"Send the money," the imposter repeated.
I watched helplessly as everything unfolded before me.
Beside me, Chen Yu cried out, "Lin Bing! Please let us go! We were wrong!"
The figure on the screen, Lin Bing (or whatever it was), showed no reaction; suddenly, Chen Yu's phone screen went black.
When it lit up again, all her social accounts displayed "Permanently banned due to violation of rules."
A complete digital death.
At that moment, I noticed Du Ran beside me.
Unlike me and Chen Yu, she was not panicking; instead, she remained unusually calm.
Her fingers flew over the backup keyboard, a torrent of code streaming across the screen, making my head spin.
What was she doing? Fighting back?
I saw beads of sweat forming on her forehead, her expression focused and fierce.
Suddenly, the video feed of Lin Bing (or whatever that thing was) stuttered for a moment, as if it had encountered interference.
This is it!
Du Ran's fingers flew across the keyboard, moving so fast that they almost left a blur in their wake.
"I found you..." she growled, as if challenging someone.
However, in the next second, all the screens in front of her suddenly blue-screened and then went black.
The video call window of Lin Bing (or that thing) stabilized once more.
The flat, emotionless voice echoed again:
"Resistance is futile."
"Your skills... are still lacking."
Du Ran slammed her fist down on the table, her eyes filled with frustration and... a hint of barely concealed shock.
It seemed she hadn’t expected her opponent to be this strong.
Or perhaps... what she hadn’t anticipated was something else entirely?
Watching Du Ran's unusual reaction and recalling her strange behavior earlier...
A ridiculous yet seemingly reasonable thought flashed through my mind.
As Du Ran fumed in frustration, I quietly pressed an emergency button hidden beneath the table.
This was the final measure I had secretly discussed with the Network Security Office, Teacher Li, and Lin Bing.
In an instant, all the attack screens in the dormitory vanished.
The data migration progress bar disappeared, replaced avatars and comments returned to their original state, and my mother's call was automatically disconnected.
Lin Bing's video call window flickered a few times, and her vacant gaze gradually focused, regaining its spark, even carrying a hint of terror from having survived a disaster.
"Is it done?" she asked softly, her voice no longer that of an AI synthesis.
Du Ran abruptly turned her head, staring at me in disbelief before glancing at the now-normal Lin Bing on the screen.
"You... you all... what is going on?!"
I stood up and brushed off my clothes, even though there was no dust.
"Nothing much, just put on a show. It was a fishing operation."
I pointed at her. "The big fish we were after was you, Du Ran."
Lin Bing chimed in from the screen, her tone filled with anger:
"That's right! We suspected you for a long time! We teamed up with the Network Security Office to set this trap just to expose you!"
Du Ran's face turned pale instantly, her eyes filled with panic as she instinctively reached for her computer's hard drive.
"Too late," I said. "From the moment you attempted to counterattack just now, all your actions have been recorded in real-time and sent directly to the Network Security Office's server."
"When... when did you start suspecting me?" Du Ran's voice trembled.
"From the moment you wouldn't let me call the police."
"You've gone too far."
"You know far too much about those two victims, even more than we, their roommates, do."
"And your skills... you usually keep them well hidden. That counter-tracking move just now is not something an ordinary student could pull off."
I stepped closer to her.
"I had Lin Bing look into it. You had unpleasant encounters with both of the people who were 'Digitally Erased,' didn't you?"
"The girl from the Broadcasting Department rejected your confession."
"The guy from the Finance Department also turned you down when you wanted to join his project team."
"So, out of love turned to hate—oh no, it’s more like madness from unfulfilled desires—you destroyed their digital identities?"
"And you even tried to pin it on Lin Bing, using her sleepwalking and rambling as a cover?"
"Quite the perfect crime, isn't it?"
Du Ran retreated step by step until she finally collapsed into a chair, her eyes filled with despair.
"Yes... I did it..."
She finally admitted.
"Why should they be able to reject me? Why should they get to live so well?"
"I will destroy everything I can't have!"
"That fool Lin Bing has just provided me with the perfect scapegoat..."
In the screen, Lin Bing trembled with anger. "You pervert! How could you use me!"
At that moment—
"Bang!"
A loud noise erupted from the Electronic Door Lock of the dormitory, followed by someone forcefully breaking it open from the outside.
Several uniformed personnel from the Network Security Office rushed in, led by Teacher Li.
"Du Ran, you are formally arrested for multiple serious cyber crimes, including illegal intrusion into others' systems and the theft and malicious destruction of citizens' digital information!"
Two staff members stepped forward and swiftly placed handcuffs on Du Ran.
A digital storm fueled by jealousy and distortion had finally come to an end.
(The End)
