My cohabitation with Gu Yan was supposed to be sweet and peaceful, but who would have thought that the arrival of an unexpected guest would shatter this hard-won tranquility in an instant?
That morning, I was in the kitchen preparing breakfast when the doorbell suddenly rang. Gu Yan went to answer it, and I vaguely heard a woman's voice. At first, I didn't pay much attention, thinking it was either a delivery person or a neighbor. However, when I stepped out of the kitchen with breakfast in hand, the scene before me felt like a plunge into an icy abyss.
A tall, elegantly dressed woman stood at our doorstep. Her makeup was flawless, and every gesture exuded grace. What shocked me the most was that she was holding Gu Yan's arm in a possessive manner.
"This is..." I struggled to maintain my composure, but my voice trembled despite my efforts.
Gu Yan seemed a bit awkward as he gently pulled away from the woman’s grip and introduced her, "Su Qing, this is Lin Yue, my..."
"I’m Gu Yan's ex-girlfriend," the woman named Lin Yue interjected, her gaze scanning me from head to toe. "You must be Gu Yan's current girlfriend, right? How... plain."
Her words dripped with disdain, and I felt as if a bucket of cold water had been dumped over me. I looked down at my casual home attire and suddenly felt utterly embarrassed.
Gu Yan frowned, about to say something when Lin Yue walked into the house uninvited. "Oh my, Gu Yan, how can you live in such a small place?" she remarked disdainfully as she surveyed her surroundings.
I tightened my grip on the plate in my hands, struggling to suppress my discomfort. Every move Lin Yue made highlighted the differences between us. She was elegant and confident, radiating the charm of a successful woman, while I felt like just an ordinary office worker.
"Lin Yue, what brings you here?" Gu Yan's tone was somewhat cold, which offered me a slight sense of relief.
Lin Yue turned around with an unreadable smile on her face. "Of course, I'm here to see you. It's been so long since we broke up; I've missed you." Her gaze flitted between me and Gu Yan. "I think there's still a chance for us to get back together. What do you think?"
My heart skipped a beat. Get back together? Was she serious? I anxiously glanced at Gu Yan, fearing that he might show even the slightest hint of wavering.
However, Gu Yan's reaction was beyond my expectations. He frowned and said firmly, "Lin Yue, we have broken up. Now I am with Su Qing, and I am very happy. Please do not disturb our lives anymore."
Upon hearing this, the tension in my heart eased slightly. But Lin Yue seemed to ignore him, wandering around our living room as if lost in her own world. "Oh, Gu Yan, don’t be so heartless. We were together for so long; don’t you have any memories at all?"
I stood aside, feeling like an outsider. Every word and action from Lin Yue challenged my limits. I wanted to say something, but I feared that my words would come off as childish or unreasonable.
Just then, Lin Yue suddenly turned to me with a feigned smile on her face. "Su Qing, right? Do you know that Gu Yan's favorite food is French Snail and his favorite drink is Bordeaux Red Wine? Can you cook French Cuisine?"
I was taken aback, unsure how to respond. I really didn’t know how to make any French dishes; the meals I usually prepared for Gu Yan were simple home-cooked ones. At that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of inferiority.
"Lin Yue, that's enough." Gu Yan's voice was filled with anger. "My life is good now; I don’t need you to meddle in it. Please leave."
Lin Yue's smile froze on her face. She glanced at Gu Yan and then at me before scoffing, "Fine, I’ll go. But Gu Yan, you need to think carefully. Are you really willing to spend your life with such an ordinary woman?"
With that, she turned and left, leaving behind an awkward silence.
I lowered my head, unable to meet Gu Yan's gaze. It wasn’t until a pair of warm hands held mine that I finally looked up.
"Don’t mind what she said," Gu Yan said gently. "What I like are the home-cooked meals you make and every moment spent with you."
I forced a smile, but the unease in my heart grew stronger. Lin Yue's appearance felt like a heavy blow that shattered my confidence.
In the days that followed, I was always restless. Every day at work, I worried about seeing Lin Yue’s figure at the company entrance. On my way home after work, I couldn’t help but glance around nervously, afraid she would suddenly appear.
What drove me to the brink of despair was the sudden emergence of rumors about me within the company. Some said I had seduced someone else's boyfriend, while others claimed I was only with Gu Yan for his money. These rumors spread like venomous snakes, silently and insidiously.
My colleagues began to look at me with suspicion, and some even deliberately avoided me in the break room. I felt an unprecedented sense of isolation, enduring each day in torment.
Just when I was about to crumble, Gu Yan became my only support. He stood firmly by my side, tirelessly helping me clarify the rumors. He even personally approached the human resources department, demanding they put an end to this workplace bullying.
"Su Qing, don’t be afraid," Gu Yan said as he held me tightly. "We will face this together. No matter what happens, I will be by your side."
His words were like a shot of adrenaline, giving me the courage to keep going. I knew that to be worthy of Gu Yan's love, I had to become stronger.
I began learning how to tackle various challenges at work and slowly learned not to feel inferior because of others' opinions. Whenever I faced difficulties, I would remember Gu Yan's determined gaze; it became my greatest motivation.
Gradually, the rumors began to die down. My colleagues slowly recognized the truth and accepted me again. In this turmoil, I emerged stronger than before.
Looking back on this experience, I deeply felt Gu Yan's love for me. He supported me not just with words but also through his actions, proving his commitment. This made me more certain that our relationship could withstand any test.
Now, I am no longer that easily discouraged girl. I know that as long as Gu Yan is by my side, I have the courage to face any challenge. This hard-won love is something I will cherish forever and never let go.
