Lang Shining led Lin Xueqing through a hidden passage, eventually arriving at an unremarkable side hall.
"We're safe for now," Lang Shining said, "but they will find this place soon."
Lin Xueqing took out a bronze mirror. "Master, this mirror..."
"I've finally found it." Lang Shining took the mirror and examined it closely. "This is the most important cultural relic."
"Why is that?"
"Because it is not just a mirror; it is also a key," Lang Shining explained. "Do you know why Emperor Qianlong was so concerned about these doors?"
Lin Xueqing shook her head.
"Because before he ascended the throne, someone used these doors to predict his fate," Lang Shining lowered his voice. "And that prophecy is recorded in this mirror."
He flipped the bronze mirror over and pointed to the patterns on the back. "Look at these designs; they may seem decorative, but they actually represent a special form of writing."
Lin Xueqing leaned in closer and noticed that the intricate patterns indeed concealed some kind of order.
"Try using the Peach Wood Comb," Lang Shining suggested.
Lin Xueqing took out the Peach Wood Comb and gently traced the lines on the back of the mirror. Suddenly, the patterns began to glow, gradually forming a line of clear text.
"The Son of Heaven shall face calamities from all directions," Lin Xueqing read aloud. "When this door opens, that door closes; through the river of history, all will eventually converge..."
"This is just the beginning of the prophecy," Lang Shining said. "The rest requires other cultural relics to unlock."
"So those people have been searching for these Cultural Relics..."
"Yes. They believe that by mastering the prophecies, they can control the course of history," Lang Shining sighed. "But they do not understand that prophecies are a part of history themselves."
Suddenly, footsteps were heard from outside.
"Someone's coming," Lin Xueqing said alertly.
"You must leave immediately." Lang Shining quickly took out a note from his pocket. "This is the clue to the next Cultural Relic. Remember, you only have two days left."
"But Master, you..."
"I have my own means of escape." Lang Shining pushed her toward the back window. "Hurry!"
Just as Lin Xueqing climbed out of the window, she heard the sound of the palace door being pushed open.
"Lang Aiqing," came Qianlong's voice, "are you alone at this late hour? Do you have something on your mind?"
"Your Majesty, I am merely contemplating a new painting," Lang Shining replied calmly.
"Is that so?" Qianlong said meaningfully. "I have heard that someone saw you with a suspicious palace maid..."
Lin Xueqing dared not listen any longer and hurried away. Taking advantage of the moonlight, she unfolded Lang Shining's note:
"Tomorrow at noon, Changyin Pavilion. Seek the one in the mirror."
She was about to put away the note when she suddenly noticed a line of small text on the back:
"Beware of those around you; not all kindness can be trusted."
Lin Xueqing thought of Xiao Cui, her heart tightening. When she returned to the room, it was empty.
She took out a bronze mirror and examined it closely under the moonlight. The surface seemed to be shrouded in a thin mist, but she could vaguely see a blurred figure.
"The person in the mirror..." she murmured to herself.
Meanwhile, in the modern Forbidden City, Shen Mo Ting and the Old Curator also found a similar bronze mirror.
"Interesting," said the Old Curator. "Did you notice? The patterns on this mirror are identical to the one recorded in the archives."
"But they are clearly separated by hundreds of years," Shen Mo Ting replied. "Unless..."
"Unless they are actually the same mirror," the Old Curator said. "Just existing in different times and spaces."
"Does that mean..."
"Yes," the Old Curator nodded. "The mirror that Xueqing found will eventually return to the modern era. The question is, what has happened in between..."
