“I do,” I say slowly, my heart filled with bitterness.

After the wedding, I brought Lin Ruoxi back to the Gu Family Old Residence.
As soon as we entered, my mother took Lin Ruoxi's hand, showering her with warmth and concern. Watching them, I felt even more restless inside.

I nodded and led Lin Ruoxi upstairs.
Once we entered the bedroom, I turned around, wanting to say something, but found Lin Ruoxi standing by the window, quietly gazing outside. She seemed completely indifferent to the wedding and to me.
"Ruoxi, you..." I started to speak but was interrupted by her.
"Gu General, it’s getting late. I want to rest," she said coldly, pushing me away with her tone.
My heart sank at that moment; all my enthusiasm was extinguished.
Yes, she is now my wife, yet she feels like a stranger I know too well. Between us lay an insurmountable chasm of five years filled with misunderstandings and hurt.
Can I win her back? Can I make her fall in love with me again? I didn’t know; I truly didn’t know...
I slowly walked to the window and lit a cigarette. The night breeze blew in, dispersing the smoke but failing to clear the confusion in my heart.
Suddenly, I spotted a familiar figure in the garden below.
Is it her?!
What is she doing here? Is she here to mock me? Or...
Now, in the midnight hours when dreams return, I often find myself back in that year on Sakura Avenue at A University. The gentle breeze rustled through the falling petals, creating a scene as beautiful as a painting. Back then, Lin Ruoxi wore a white dress and stood under a tree, smiling radiantly at me.
I admit that I loved her. That kind of love was pure and passionate, warm like sunlight. Unfortunately, I was too young and too arrogant at that time, always believing she would be there waiting for me.
"Ze Yu, what do you want to do after graduation?" she asked softly while leaning on my shoulder.
"Of course, inherit the family business and then marry you," I answered without hesitation, filled with dreams for the future. At that moment, I thought everything was within my grasp—career, love, life—all would go smoothly. But I forgot that fate loves nothing more than to catch us off guard.
Graduation season was also the most difficult time for the Gu Group. The family business was facing a crisis, the funding chain had broken, and bankruptcy was imminent. I was overwhelmed, busy every day yet still unable to find a solution.
During that time, I lost a lot of weight and looked much more haggard. Lin Ruoxi saw it all and felt the pain in her heart. She wanted to help me, but there was nothing she could do.
I knew that the Gu Family could not fall; it was my grandfather's lifelong effort, and I couldn't bear to watch it crumble in my hands. I also knew that I couldn't lose Lin Ruoxi; she was the most important person in my life. Unfortunately, fate always seemed to deliver a fatal blow when one was most helpless.
"Ze Yu, the Lin Group is willing to help us," my father's weary voice came through the phone. "But they have a condition..."
I held the phone tightly, trembling all over. I knew that condition was something I could not bear!
"They want me to marry the daughter of the Lin family," my father said slowly, his tone filled with helplessness.
I fell silent. On the other end of the line, there was only endless silence.
What should I do? On one side was my family's fate, and on the other was the woman I loved. How should I choose?! I closed my eyes in agony, tears streaming down my cheeks.
"Ruoxi, I'm sorry..." I silently said in my heart. I'm sorry; I'm going back on my word. I'm sorry; I'm going to lose you. I made the worst decision of my life—agreeing to the marriage alliance.
The next time I saw Lin Ruoxi was at a board meeting for the Gu Group. She wore a professional outfit with exquisite makeup on her face; she looked more mature and also more unfamiliar.
She stood behind the chairman of the Lin Group, her gaze cold as she looked at me as if I were a stranger.
I knew I had already lost her.
"Gu General, I've heard much about you," she said as she walked up to me, extending her hand with a distant and polite tone.
I looked at her, filled with bitterness. I wanted to grasp her hand and tell her how much I loved her. But there was nothing I could do.
"Miss Lin, it's a pleasure," I managed to force out a smile as I gently shook her hand but felt as if I were holding a block of cold ice.
That night, I drank heavily to numb myself. I knew that from the moment I made my choice, I had already lost the right to be happy.
"Gu Zeyu, wake up!" A voice suddenly echoed in my mind. "Your life is completely ruined!"
I jolted awake to find myself lying in bed, drenched in sweat.
Looking out at the pitch-black night sky filled me with fear. Was this really how I would spend my life?!
I refused to accept it! I absolutely refused!
I would reclaim what belonged to me! I would find Lin Ruoxi!
Shaking, I picked up my phone and dialed a number.
The phone rang for a long time but no one answered. My heart sank to the depths.
Where on earth could she be?!
I dreamed of her again. In my dream, we were still nestled under the cherry blossom trees at A University; she smiled like a flower while I was young and impetuous, believing that such happiness would last forever.
I suddenly opened my eyes and looked at the empty room, feeling bitter inside.

I picked up my phone wanting to call her but hesitated to press the dial button. I was afraid—afraid of hearing her cold voice and afraid that she didn't want to talk to me at all.
This was all self-inflicted, wasn't it? In pain, I closed my eyes tightly and buried my head between my knees, pounding my head fiercely.
Ding dong!
The doorbell suddenly rang.
I abruptly lifted my head, a glimmer of hope igniting within me—was it her? Had she returned?! I stumbled to the door, flung it open, only to be met with a stranger's face.
"Gu General, this is your package," the delivery person said politely, handing me a parcel.
My heart plummeted to the depths.
It wasn't her.
I took the package, closed the door, and tore it open. Inside was a document.
The front page boldly displayed the words: "Gu Group Bankruptcy Liquidation Report."
My pupils constricted in shock, and my anxiety surged to its peak!
Who was it?! Who wanted to bring the Gu family to ruin?!
I couldn't afford to think too much; I quickly dialed my assistant's number. The phone rang for what felt like an eternity, but no one answered.
My heart raced with increasing unease. I felt that something was quietly unfolding.
I forced myself to calm down, got dressed, and hurried to the office.
The Gu Group Building was still brightly lit. However, the moment I stepped through the company doors, an unprecedented chill enveloped me.
In the past, employees had treated me with utmost respect; now they avoided me as if I were a plague.
I knew they were afraid.
Afraid of the collapse of Gu Group, afraid of losing their jobs, and even more afraid of being implicated by me.
Suppressing my anger, I made my way to my office.
Pushing open the door, I was taken aback to find an unexpected person lounging in my chair, leisurely sipping coffee.
"Who are you?!" I demanded angrily.
The person slowly lifted his head, a knowing smile playing on his lips. "Gu General, long time no see..."
That face—I would never forget it!
Five years ago, he was the one who personally sent me to prison!
