The door to the hospital room creaked open, and the Old Commander stepped inside, taking a seat by Ling Long's bed. The curtains were drawn tightly, blocking out any hint of light. 0

"Is he... alright?" After a long silence, Ling Long cautiously asked. 0

"Yes, the knife struck true," the Old Commander replied, pausing before continuing, "Is that good enough?" 0

Just as Ling Long was about to respond, a violent cough erupted from her. The Old Commander gently patted her back, helping her catch her breath. Bloodstains were scattered across the bedding. 0

"Well, there are only a few days left. Fearless and unremorseful," she gasped. "As long as he can occasionally remember that there was once a person named Ling Long in his life, then my existence won't have been in vain." 0

As evening approached, fatigue washed over her, and she turned away, falling silent. The Old Commander slipped out at some point, closing the door behind him with a sigh of regret. 0

Throughout it all, her heart held only one person—Li Jinghuan. In truth, since that dinner party, the understanding Ling Long had become the Old Commander's informant. The swift capture of Jiang Yuanfei was largely thanks to her covert intelligence. Li Jinghuan's rise in the Old Commander's favor was also due to her secret recommendation. Her leg had been broken by Jiang Yuanfei after she helped Li Jinghuan escape back then. And that knife wound? She had deliberately aimed it off-target. 0

Recently, she discovered she was in the late stages of lung cancer and had little time left. Fearing that Li Jinghuan might still harbor feelings for her, she implored the Old Commander to stage a performance that would lead him to believe she had truly fallen for Jiang Yuanfei, thus allowing him to move on and love another woman. 0

In this life, because of your moment of hesitation, we drifted apart. Thus, I must lock my love for you away in a box, waiting for our next life when we have washed away our pasts and forgotten everything, so we can hold hands once more and start anew. 0

At that moment, next door, Li Jinghuan gently opened his eyes. 0

"Where is she?" 0

The Old Commander hesitated before saying, "She’s gone. Probably took Jiang Yuanfei back to Qingyuan." 0

He let out a bitter smile, feeling a sharp pain in his wounded heart once again. 0

The next evening, the Old Commander pushed him out into the yard for some fresh air. As they passed by the adjacent room, he noticed several nurses tidying up. The bed had been vacated, the bloodstained bedding replaced with new ones, and the floor was swept clean. However, in the nearby trash bin lay a few bright red watermelon rinds, quietly resting there. Li Jinghuan rubbed his eyes, sniffed, and instinctively adjusted his trench coat, shivering slightly; it was already October. 0

The Old Commander said, "Jinghuan, you're not a kid anymore. It's time to settle down and find someone." 0

"Mm." 0

"What kind of person are you thinking of? Let me give you some advice. I think Xi Cheng's daughter or General Liu's daughter would be great; they're both beautiful and generous." 0

"Mm, let me think about it." 0

Well, it didn't really matter; as long as she wasn't like that girl who valued money above all else. Oh, and that little town called Qingyuan—he thought he would never return there in his lifetime. 0

"Ling Long, oh Ling Long, this time I really have to let you go." 0

While organizing his room before the wedding, he inadvertently came across half of a pink river lantern, on which faintly written were the words "Seeking a lifetime of glory and wealth." 0

He stared at it without eating or drinking for an entire day and night. The next morning, however, he ordered it to be thrown away. 0

If he could return to that initial starting point, perhaps he could find the remnants of the other half of the lantern. But Li Jinghuan would never know the complete phrase inscribed upon it. 0

Not seeking a lifetime of glory and wealth; only wishing for everlasting joy together. 0
