My name is Tang Shi, an ordinary high school senior. If I had to point out something special about myself, it would be that I have a nemesis—Jiang Chen.
That morning, I headed to school with my backpack as usual. As soon as I reached the school gate, I spotted Jiang Chen's annoying face. He was leaning against a pillar, looking nonchalant.
"Hey, Tang the Great Poet has arrived!" Jiang Chen raised an eyebrow at me, his tone dripping with sarcasm.
I rolled my eyes and ignored him. Just then, he suddenly stuck out his foot, nearly tripping me. I stumbled and almost fell flat on my face.
"Jiang Chen!" I glared at him in anger. "Are you asking for a beating?"
He shrugged innocently. "Oh, sorry! Didn't see you there."
I gritted my teeth, wishing I could punch him. But thinking about the class starting soon, I could only swallow my anger and walk away.
As soon as I sat down at my desk, my phone vibrated unexpectedly. I pulled it out to see a strange app icon flashing on the screen.
"Truth or Dare?" I frowned, ready to delete it when I realized it wouldn’t close.
At that moment, the entire classroom fell silent. I looked up to find everyone staring at their phones, confusion written all over their faces.
"Class, please put your phones away," our homeroom teacher's voice rang out from the front, but she too looked bewildered as she stared at her device.
A chill ran down my spine as I realized something was off. This app seemed to have appeared on everyone's phones and was controlling their devices.
Just as I was pondering what was happening, my phone screen lit up with a bright message:
"Task: Make Jiang Chen bark like a dog in public. Deadline: Before school ends today."
I widened my eyes in disbelief. What kind of ridiculous task was this? And why Jiang Chen of all people?
Though a thousand questions raced through my mind, the thought of making Jiang Chen embarrass himself made me secretly delighted. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
After school, I deliberately waited for Jiang Chen at the school gate. When I saw him strolling out slowly, I immediately blocked his path.
"Hey, Jiang Chen," I said provocatively, "do you dare to play a game?"
Jiang Chen raised an eyebrow. "What game?"
I pretended to be nonchalant as I replied, "Just you barking like a dog for a few times."
"Are you crazy?" Jiang Chen looked at me with disdain. "Who would do something so stupid?"
I shrugged. "What, are you scared? I knew you were a coward."
His face flushed instantly. "Who said I’m scared?"
With that, he took a deep breath and suddenly barked loudly.
I was taken aback; I didn’t expect him to actually do it. The students around us stopped in their tracks, staring at us in surprise.
Jiang Chen seemed to get into it and barked a few more times. His barks were deep and powerful, sounding just like a big golden retriever, drawing the attention of passersby.
I couldn’t help but laugh out loud. This fool, Jiang Chen, actually went through with it!
However, my laughter quickly froze when I noticed the sudden shift in his expression; his eyes turned cold and menacing.
"Tang Shi," he said through gritted teeth, "you wait for me."
A chill ran down my spine as I realized I might have gotten myself into trouble. But it was too late to back down now; I had to face the consequences.
"Am I scared of you?" I feigned calmness and said, "If you have the guts, come at me."
Jiang Chen sneered and turned to leave. As I watched his retreating figure, an ominous feeling settled in my gut.
Sure enough, the next morning, I received a new task from the app: wear outrageous clothing to school.
I stared at the glaringly bright neon dress hanging in my closet, wanting to cry. This had to be Jiang Chen's revenge!
After much hesitation, I finally put on the dress. Walking through the campus, I felt like a moving neon light, with everyone's eyes fixed on me.
"Wow, Tang the Great Poet, are you going to the Halloween Party?"
"Oh my gosh, my eyes are going to be blinded!"
The teasing voices of my classmates echoed around me, and I wished I could just find a crack in the ground to hide in.
Just as I was feeling embarrassed and furious, Jiang Chen strolled over casually.
"Wow, Tang the Great Poet, you really look... unique today," he said with a bright smile. "What’s up? Trying to stand out with your unusual outfit?"
I was so angry that I trembled all over, wanting nothing more than to rush up and tear his mouth apart.
"Jiang Chen, you jerk!" I gritted my teeth and said, "Just wait, I will settle this score with you sooner or later!"
Jiang Chen shrugged innocently. "I haven't done anything at all. Besides, aren't you enjoying being the center of attention?"
I took a deep breath, suppressing the urge to punch him. At that moment, I suddenly realized a serious problem: this app seemed to really be controlling our behavior. If this continued, the consequences would be unimaginable.
Looking at Jiang Chen's smug expression, I silently vowed that I could not lose to him. But at the same time, I began to think about how to deal with this bizarre app.
This "war" sparked by the app had only just begun, and Jiang Chen and I were destined to be entangled in this absurd game.
