I stared at my phone screen, my brows furrowed. This damn app had released a series of tasks that were utterly ridiculous. Feeding each other chili peppers? Swapping clothes for a day? Were these people’s brains filled with mush?
"Hey, Tang Shi, what are you daydreaming about?" Jiang Chen's annoying voice came from behind me. "Don't tell me you're scared of these little tasks."
I rolled my eyes and replied irritably, "Who’s scared? I’m just thinking about the easiest way to complete these tasks."
"Oh?" Jiang Chen raised an eyebrow. "How about we make a bet to see who can finish these tasks faster?"
I shot him a glare, wondering how this guy could be so confident. But when had I, Tang Shi, ever backed down from a challenge? "Sure, let’s see who wins."
Thus began our absurd competition. The first task was to feed each other chili peppers. I gritted my teeth as I watched Jiang Chen approach me with a bright red little devil in his hand.
"Open wide," he said with a mischievous grin. "Don’t worry, I’ll be gentle."
I fought the urge to punch him and opened my mouth. As soon as the chili pepper hit my tongue, it felt like my entire mouth was on fire. Tears streamed down uncontrollably as I desperately tried not to cry out.
Jiang Chen looked at my expression and suddenly burst into laughter. "Hahaha, Tang Shi, your face right now is just too funny!"
I glared at him fiercely and mumbled, "Your turn now, jerk."
Seeing Jiang Chen's pained expression as he ate the chili pepper brought me an inexplicable sense of satisfaction. This guy usually acted so tough; now he was just like everyone else.
The next task was even more ridiculous. We swapped clothes for a day. I was wearing Jiang Chen's oversized T-shirt, stumbling around campus like a clown, while he squeezed into my clothes, looking so tight that it was almost painful to watch.
"Tang Shi, did you intentionally buy your clothes one size too small?" Jiang Chen complained as he walked, "I feel like I'm about to suffocate."
I couldn't help but laugh, "Who told you to always mock my figure? Now you understand my struggles, right?"
Thus, during our mission, we continuously teased each other, sharing countless laughs. Although many tasks were awkward and uncomfortable, I found myself unexpectedly enjoying the process.
What surprised me even more was that I discovered Jiang Chen, despite his sharp tongue, was actually quite clever. He always came up with unexpected ways to complete our tasks. For instance, during the task of "eating lunch in the strangest way," he suggested using chopsticks to hold a spoon while eating. It looked ridiculous, but it indeed fulfilled the task's requirements.
Jiang Chen also seemed to notice some of my strengths. In the task of "doing push-ups for an hour," I gritted my teeth and held on until the very last second, even though my arms felt like they were about to break. Jiang Chen watched me with a glimmer of surprise and admiration in his eyes.
"I didn't expect you to be so persistent," he said, his tone lacking the usual sarcasm. "It seems I underestimated you before."
I raised an eyebrow proudly, "Of course! I'm not someone who gives up easily."
Just as we began to develop curiosity and appreciation for each other, an accident occurred. During a climbing task, I accidentally fell from a height and twisted my ankle.
I gasped in pain, tears almost spilling from my eyes. Just when I thought I might have to give up, Jiang Chen suddenly appeared by my side.
"Are you okay?" His voice carried a hint of concern that caught me off guard.
I forced a smile, "I'm fine; I just twisted it."
Without saying another word, Jiang Chen crouched down to examine my ankle. His touch was surprisingly gentle, completely unlike the sharp-tongued guy I was used to.
"It seems you've sprained it," he said. "Let me carry you to the infirmary."
I was taken aback. Was this really the same Jiang Chen who always clashed with me?
"Hey, are you stupid?" Jiang Chen said impatiently when he saw my lack of response. "Get on already. Do you want to wait here until dark?"
I snapped back to reality and awkwardly climbed onto his back. Jiang Chen's broad shoulders gave me an unexpected sense of security. I suddenly realized that perhaps my previous hostility towards him had been excessive.
As the tasks in the app grew increasingly difficult, so did the penalties. Both Jiang Chen and I understood that we had to cooperate to survive.
"Listen, Tang Shi," Jiang Chen said seriously, looking me in the eye. "I know we've had our differences before, but the situation is different now. We need to put aside our grudges and face these challenges together."
I nodded, aware that this was not the time for stubbornness. "You're right; let's call a truce for now."
Thus, we decided to temporarily set aside our past grievances and tackle the app's challenges together. Although I didn't know what difficulties lay ahead, at that moment, I felt that as long as Jiang Chen was by my side, there was nothing to fear.
Watching Jiang Chen seriously contemplate our next task, I suddenly thought that perhaps this app brought not only trouble but also some unexpected gains. For instance, I had come to know a new side of Jiang Chen and rediscovered myself.
No matter what happened next, I was ready. Because I knew I was no longer fighting alone.
