I turned my head and met Li Mingcheng's puzzled expression. 0
"For twenty years, I believed this case was long settled..." 0
My voice trailed off as a violent cough interrupted me. Li Mingcheng quickly got up to pour me a glass of water, but I gently waved my hand to signal that I was fine. 0
Suppressing the pain in my chest, I slowly continued, "Twenty years ago, we were wrong. We arrested the wrong person and convicted the wrong case. Wu Zheng is innocent. The real murderer of Lin Xiaoyu is... Chen Guoping." 0
Li Mingcheng suddenly sprang up from his chair, too shocked to speak. 0
After a moment, he managed to ask, "Teacher Zhang, you... you say Chen Guoping is the murderer of Lin Xiaoyu. Do you have any evidence?" 0

"Do you have evidence?" Chen Guoping glared at me through clenched teeth, his eyes flashing with anger and fear. "Without evidence, I will not only sue you for kidnapping but also for defamation!" 0
"Evidence?" I scoffed, retorting, "Chen Guoping, have you forgotten what I do? If I had no evidence, would I tie you up here?" 0
I pulled out a voice recorder from my pocket and pressed play before he could react. A woman's voice echoed in the empty garage. 0
Chen Guoping's eyes widened in shock, the color draining from his face as he began to squirm nervously in his chair. 0

Four months ago on an afternoon. 0
I sat in Zhao Jian's office; he had once been my student and was now a seasoned prosecutor. 0
"Teacher Zhang, are you really going to reopen the Lin Xiaoyu Case?" Zhao Jian asked with a furrowed brow and a worried expression. 0
I nodded. As my student, he should know me well enough. 0
Zhao Jian sighed and voiced his concerns: "Teacher Zhang, this case has been closed for twenty years. The murderer has already committed suicide; reopening it would be extremely difficult. More importantly," he paused, "the person you're now suspecting, Chen Guoping, is a highly respected Middle School Principal. Moreover, his father was once a senior leader in charge of Politics and Law in our province. This old leader has students all over; many are now top officials in our Port City's Politics and Law system. Even if he were the murderer, reopening the case... it would be nearly impossible..." 0
I looked at him silently; this kid had once been a prosecutor who only cared about cases, but in just a few years, he had learned to protect himself. 0
"Teacher Zhang," Zhao Jian's tone softened, "you've been retired for several years now; at your age, why not just enjoy life? Isn't that better?" 0
I shook my head with a bitter smile; he still didn't understand. I wasn't entirely sure that Chen Guoping was the murderer, but since there were doubts, I couldn't turn a blind eye. 0
The scales of justice might have already tilted in my hands; innocent people had suffered unjustly while the real murderer roamed free. How could I enjoy life knowing that? 0

"I don't currently intend to overturn the case; I just want to thoroughly investigate whether there was an erroneous judgment. Sigh... The teacher won't make things difficult for you, and you don't need to persuade me any further. I only ask that you help me by allowing me to review the previous case files." 0

Seeing my insistence, Zhao Jian remained silent for a long time before finally conceding, "Alright... Teacher Zhang, I can let you access the old case files, but that's all." 0
