As the door swung open, Ji Tianming rushed in, his eyes filled with worry and tension.
"Li Li, what happened to you?" He steadied my swaying body. "Su Yuemei and I called you countless times. We thought something had happened to you; we were so worried!"
Seeing the concern in his eyes made my tears spill over. Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through my head, and I felt that unfamiliar personality stirring within me.
I clutched my head and cried out in anger, "Get away! Get out of my head!"
Ji Tianming quickly wrapped his arms around me. "Li Li! Li Li! What’s wrong? What happened?"
I grasped his arm as if it were a lifeline, sobbing uncontrollably. He gently patted my back. "You can tell me anything. No matter what happens, I’ll stand by your side."
After a long moment, I lifted my head and looked into his eyes, trembling as I spoke, "Tianming, I... I fell into their trap. They implanted a... personality of a twisted serial killer in me. I’m no longer the original Li Li; I’ve become a monster... a perverted monster that could lose control at any moment!"
As the words left my lips, all my strength drained away. I collapsed onto the floor, burying my head in my hands, unable to face Ji Tianming’s reaction.
The room was eerily silent.
After a moment, Ji Tianming gently placed his hand on my shoulder. "Li Li, look up and see me."
I slowly raised my head, tears blurring my vision as I gazed at him.
"Listen," Ji Tianming said firmly, "you are not a monster or a pervert. You are Li Li—a stubborn, brave girl who loves to chew on pencil tips. An implanted personality doesn’t change your essence."
I choked out, "But... but I feel like I've changed. I'm scared that one day I will... will..."
"Become a murderer?" Ji Tianming completed my thought. "Li Li, in my years as a police officer, I've seen all kinds of people. You know? Everyone has a dark side; the difference lies in how we control it."
His words left me stunned.
Ji Tianming continued, "Those murderers are simply people who couldn’t manage their dark sides or balance their lives. Having this implanted personality doesn’t mean you will become a murderer. Likewise, those who have been given so-called excellent personalities aren’t guaranteed to be truly outstanding individuals."
"Are you saying that I can balance and coexist with these two personalities within me?"
Ji Tianming took my hand earnestly and said, "Accept it, control it, use it. Li Li, every person is complex; your unique dual personality might become your advantage."
His words struck me like lightning, illuminating the fog within me. I stared at him for a long time, feeling my cold hands and feet slowly warming up.
"Tianming, you’re right. In this world, sometimes one must first fall into darkness to reveal the light."
I wiped away my tears, stood up, and took a deep breath. "Tianming, I'm fine now. Let's continue the investigation! I won't let those people get away with this; I still need to avenge Dun Dun!"
Ji Tianming smiled, his eyes shining with approval. "That's the Li Li I know! But..." He sighed and plopped down onto the sofa. "Speaking of the investigation, we have a big problem..."
"What problem? I'm fine now, what's wrong with you?"
"There’s a mole in the City Bureau." Ji Tianming looked at me seriously. "I suspected there might be an issue within the police department, which is why I've been keeping the progress of our investigation under wraps."
The news hit me like a bucket of cold water. "What do we do now?"
