He never expected that locking her in the prison out of anger that night would nearly cost his beloved woman her life in a fire.
When the servant came to report, he felt as if he had fallen back into a nightmare, the same fear he experienced at the age of ten when he witnessed his uncle poison the emperor. The suffocating sensation of his mother tightly covering his mouth and nose to keep him silent in that moment gripped him once more. Upon seeing the prison cell, unrecognizable in its charred state, his heart sank, yet he couldn't shake the feeling that she wouldn't leave him like this. He searched through the blackened ruins all night, and only when he failed to find her body did he breathe a sigh of relief and send people out to search for her, believing he would find her soon.
But three years passed before he finally received news of the woman who haunted his dreams. He rushed to the small town only to learn that she had lost her sight.
Chun Zhou knew the man lay on the ground covered in blood, unable to muster the courage to lift his foot and leave.
Bai Li Yu explained in broken sentences, gradually growing quieter until he finally closed his eyes.
…
When Bai Li Yu woke up, the first thing he saw was a stern dog face! Big Yellow was actually sitting by his bedside! As soon as it noticed him open his eyes, its expression turned fierce, and it began barking.
If it weren't for the dull pain at his waist, Bai Li Yu would have jumped up.
"You're awake?" Bai Li Yu lifted his head and saw Chun Zhou sitting at the foot of the bed with her eyes covered, tilting her face to ask him. He couldn't help but let out a long sigh of relief.
"Yeah..." he replied hoarsely, "It's good... I managed to hold onto you last night..."
"Get it straight!" Chun Zhou said with a cold expression. "You didn't hold onto me!"
"Huh?" Bai Li Yu felt confused. At that moment, Big Yellow barked again. He focused and realized he was gripping one of its front legs tightly! In his panic, he had tightened his grip even more; Big Yellow was protesting.
"Ah!" He quickly shook off his hand, and Big Yellow finally broke free, jumping off the bed but stumbling and falling to the ground—his front legs had gone numb after being held by Bai Li Yu all night...
"Don't you think you were being overly dramatic in that last part? Did you really think it would end with you kneeling on the ground, blood on your hands, clutching my robe and crying amidst the fallen petals? Oh, that would indeed be quite a scene!"
Chun Zhou scoffed. "In fact, you could ask your guards hiding in the shadows! I was blindfolded, and the dagger didn't pierce deeply at all, yet you collapsed to the ground, wailing and shouting. Big Yellow was startled and about to run away when you grabbed one of his front legs and started rambling. In the end, it was me who subdued Big Yellow from biting you, allowing your dozens of guards to carry both you and the dog back to the inn... So now here I am, still wasting time talking to you!"
Bai Li Yu covered his face, glancing at Big Yellow who lay on the ground still throwing him disdainful looks. He wished he could just bite his tongue to end it all.
Not hearing a response from him, Chun Zhou stood up. Bai Li Yu reacted quickly and grabbed her arm.
"Regardless, at least I've managed to keep you here!" His face flushed with urgency. "A Zhou, feel free to let Big Yellow bite me if you want, but you still spent the night with me!"
Chun Zhou fell silent. After listening to his explanations for half the night and hearing one of his trusted subordinates chatter on for three streets while carrying him and Big Yellow back, she already knew the truth. It turned out that Qing Yu was actually Bai Li Yu's uncle's spy planted in the general's residence.
"Why are you silent? Answer me! Say you're not leaving anymore!" Bai Li Yu asked eagerly.
"I can take care of your..." Chun Zhou murmured softly.
"Hmph!" Chun Zhou let out a cold laugh as she reached behind her head to untie the silk cloth covering her eyes. In an instant, her striking black-and-white eyes sparkled with clarity. "What do I need you to take care of?"
Bai Li Yu was left dumbfounded as Chun Zhou threw the silk cloth aside and took advantage of his momentary shock to shake off his hand. "People always say that the best fortune-tellers are blind! I do business blindfolded; it’s surprisingly effective!"
Moreover, while a whole group of people rushed around the country with hundreds of missing person posters drawn by Bai Li Yu during three sleepless days in his study, they never imagined that the beautiful girl with enchanting eyes depicted in those drawings was actually a blind woman leading a Huang Dog.
Three years ago
Chun Zhou stood outside the cell, dazed as she rubbed her sore and dry eyes. When she finally stood up, she suddenly noticed Big Yellow wagging its tail at her.
After a moment, she gradually began to see everything clearly. Chun Zhou thought to herself that she must be anemic; when escaping with Big Yellow, she would need to eat something good to replenish her strength...
