The four of them returned to Fang Zigui's clinic, their expressions grave as they gathered around the table. Lin Mingchang had just notified the Police Station, and at dawn, they would seal off the well at Qi Yun Temple. He had also arranged for the entire temple to be under control, prohibiting anyone from entering or leaving.
"Roll up your sleeves," Fang Zigui said in a tone that brooked no refusal, already preparing cotton balls and medicine in his hands.
Reluctantly, Lin Mingchang rolled up his sleeve, revealing two bloodstains on his arm. Although the wounds had stopped bleeding, they displayed an abnormal purplish hue.
Shen Tong leaned closer to Lin Mingchang's arm, her brow furrowed. She noticed wisps of blue-purple "pathogenic energy" writhing around the wound.
"This isn't good," she whispered. "Lin Mingchang, you've been infected. Doctor Fang, please take care of it quickly!"
Fang Zigui dabbed some alcohol and began to carefully clean Lin Mingchang's wounds.
"It seems to be only a superficial infection for now. I'll apply some medication to block it; you should be fine. But if left untreated, it could spread to your eyes within three days."
After applying the medicine to Lin Mingchang, Fang Zigui retrieved a valuable-looking wooden box from a shelf high up.
"I brought back a microscope from Germany when I returned from my studies; I hope it will be useful."
Fang Zigui skillfully adjusted the microscope, placing a drop of well water on a glass slide before inserting it into the stage. He leaned in to observe for a moment before straightening up slowly. "Indeed... it's Zhangqi Gu Chong..."
"What did you see?" the other three asked almost simultaneously, leaning in with anxious curiosity.
Fang Zigui stepped aside to allow them to take turns looking through the microscope.
Through the lens, they saw numerous tiny blue creatures swimming in the water, resembling a cross between leeches and spiders, with multiple long tentacles and a distinct suction cup structure.
"This is the physical manifestation of the pathogenic energy," Shen Tong said softly.
Having seen the true form of Zhangqi Gu Chong, Lin Mingchang was no longer calm; just thinking about these disgusting creatures existing within him made him uneasy...
He paced around the room anxiously. "What should we do? Is there any way to eliminate them completely?"
"Sit down first; you're making my head spin..." Fang Zigui glanced at the shelves filled with medical books. "I need to find a formula that can completely eradicate these creatures; it will just take some time."
For the next three days, Fang Zigui's clinic was so cluttered that one could hardly move. The medicine cabinet had been pushed against the wall, and both the wooden table and floor were piled high with various Ancient Medical Texts, herbal specimens, and experimental equipment.
The kerosene lamp burned day and night, while tea cooled and heated repeatedly.
Fang Zigui could hardly remember the last time he had slept; his eyes were deeply sunken from exhaustion.
"Doctor Fang, you need to take a break," Xiaoshuang said as she walked in with a steaming bowl of Yangchun Noodles, wrinkling her nose at the medicinal smell that filled the room. "The scent of medicine in here is almost enough to knock someone out."
Without lifting his head, Fang Zigui waved his hand dismissively. "Thank you, just put it down. I'll eat later."
"The last bowl of noodles is still sitting there untouched," Xiaoshuang complained as she replaced the cold bowl with the hot one, forcefully pushing it closer to Fang Zigui.
He sighed and reluctantly took a few bites of the noodles. Suddenly, his eyes lit up. He tossed the bowl aside and began rummaging through the pile of books.
Before long, he pulled out an old, thread-bound book from the bottom of the stack—an annotated version of Ben Cao Yan Yi. He quickly flipped to a certain page, his finger racing along the tiny script.
Without bothering to explain himself to Xiaoshuang, he grabbed a dozen different herbs and began experimenting with combinations.
An hour later, he suddenly stood up. "I've got it!"
