Xu Ruicheng did not enter through the front door but instead circled to the side and headed directly for the basement. He first glanced around, then knocked three times on the door, paused, and knocked two more times.
The basement door quietly opened a crack, and Xu Ruicheng slipped inside, the door closing silently behind him. Lin Mingchang and Shen Tong exchanged glances and quietly approached.
The small building had a half-basement designed beneath it, with a row of small windows facing the street to allow light and ventilation. Shen Tong and Lin Mingchang crouched beneath the window, peering through to see a tall foreigner with a neatly trimmed golden beard speaking with Xu Ruicheng. However, they could not hear what was being said through the glass.
Suddenly, Shen Tong tightly grasped Lin Mingchang's sleeve; her right eye felt a sharp pain that she stifled without making a sound. She saw that behind the basement door, there was an overwhelming aura of fear and pain, a deep blue essence as dark as ink glowing faintly in the night, extending countless tendrils that quivered in silent screams.
Lin Mingchang noticed her distress and whispered, "What’s wrong? What did you see?"
"The children... are not here. There is no anger from children here, but they must have been locked up here before, just behind that door..." Shen Tong gritted her teeth. "The children were once filled with fear and suffering..."
Lin Mingchang's hand moved to his sidearm just as the foreigner suddenly turned his head, his sharp gaze sweeping toward the window. In an instant, his eyes met Lin Mingchang's outside.
"Someone's here! You've been followed!" the foreigner shouted sharply, abandoning Xu Ruicheng and swiftly darting toward another part of the basement.
Without hesitation, Lin Mingchang sprang up, kicked open the wooden basement door, and aimed his gun at Xu Ruicheng. "Don't move!"
Xu Ruicheng turned pale, trembling as he raised his hands. However, the foreigner had already vanished, leaving only a half-open door behind.
"Shen Tong, keep an eye on him!" Lin Mingchang shouted before turning to chase after the foreigner. The foreigner's figure darted between the mansions of the affluent neighborhood; Lin Mingchang pursued closely but it was clear that the other man was very familiar with the terrain.
Ultimately, at a corner of a wall, the foreigner's figure completely disappeared. Frustrated, Lin Mingchang punched the wall before quickly returning to the basement.
In a corner of the basement lay several small beds, but they were all empty. Shen Tong was staring intently at Xu Ruicheng; upon seeing Lin Mingchang return, she said, "We’re too late. The children have already been moved."
Xu Ruicheng was handcuffed and kneeling on the ground, his face filled with fear.
"Tell me! Where have the children been taken?" Lin Mingchang leaned in closer, questioning him sternly.
Xu Ruicheng kept his head down, stubbornly refusing to speak.
"He won't say anything," Shen Tong said, looking into Xu Ruicheng's eyes. "He's not afraid of you; he's afraid of that Foreigner from earlier."
Meanwhile, Fang Zigui skillfully picked the lock on the back door and quietly slipped into Rui Cheng Wood Workshop with Xiaoshuang.
The workshop was shrouded in darkness. Xiaoshuang took out a small flashlight from her bag, and under its faint beam, the faces of the puppets appeared even more sinister.
On the first floor, there was not only the storefront but also a kitchen and a storage room.
"Xu Ruicheng's bedroom should be upstairs," Fang Zigui pointed to the staircase. "Watch your step."
The two of them tiptoed up the stairs to the second floor, which had two rooms: a larger one that belonged to Xu Ruicheng and a smaller one for the apprentice.
Xu Ruicheng's bedroom was neatly organized, containing a narrow bed, a wardrobe, and a large wooden desk.
Ruan Xiaoshuang's flashlight beam swept across the desk, revealing several sheets of paper spread out on it.
As she approached for a closer look, she couldn't help but gasp softly, "Oh my god, this is..."
